(can't wait to see the US thread!)
So lets name the best record shops here in Oz.

melbourne:

missing link (flinders lane melbourne) is good for imports and punk stuff and they have lots of punk vinyl. overpriced.

au go go (off little bourke st melbourne) has a general range of local and overseas rock/indie/punk and a fair bit (although significantly dwindling thanks to ebay) of secondhand vinyl. overpriced. used to heaps better but is a shadow of its former self.

cd discounts (cnr bourke and william) has a crap range but it's cheap and i get all my $10 gems there. same goes for dragonfly discs in elizabeth street, although it has a rather excellent range of new CDs all under $15 (this is aussie dollars people)

polyester in fitzroy is ok but it is overpriced (sensing a theme here?). heartland i haven't been to in years but was always overpriced .

i don't visit any others. the Dixons chain can be good for some secondhand bargains and the occasional nice surprise. Vicious Sloth has some ace collectibles but makes the overpricing of the other stores seem tame.

melbourne:

just go to synaesthesia on block lane. there's nothing better.

adelaide:

b sharp on rundle street has improved of late (lots of old disco 12s, arthur russell bootlegs etc.): definitely a shining light at the moment. whether it will fall soon, who knows.

big star on rundle street is the old classic and they do indeed have lots of good stock, this is about the only place to find good folk records. their store in magill can have puzzling amounts of good 2nd-hand records (and then a 6-month drought where all new stock is crap), the norwood store is a bit bland but they've always got all the byrds/gene clark cds (a good thing.) haven't been to their other three stores for such a long time.

record library on twin st has its dry spells but i just got fleetwood mac's 'pious bird of good omen' there cheap so it can't be all bad eh?

porthole in port adelaide is worth it for good 2nd-hand (not too expensive) and the stoned, glazed demeanour of the staff. ALL the staff.

nostalgic sounds in unley has its moments: a lot of bobbie gentry moments actually! and a great pile of old 78s that looks fantastic. and all the records are shelved so you just have to scroll through the spines.

i still think one of the best record stores i've been to in aus is egg records in newtown, sydney ...

jon dale, Tuesday, 26 August 2003 23:09 (twenty-two years ago)

synaesthesia is good (i've found some good stuff there) but *da ta* is overpriced. it's excellent for finding electronica and stuff if you don't like buying online though..

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 23:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Sydney:

Egg, Newtown

Reefer Records, Crown St, Darlinghurst

Red Eye, Sydney (but it'll cost ya)

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 23:38 (twenty-two years ago)

will it ever. but redeye's secondhand selection is excellent

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 23:39 (twenty-two years ago)

i was impressed by 78s in Perth when i went there early last year. got a whole stack of vinyl in v good nick.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 23:40 (twenty-two years ago)

lawsons any good any more? as i'm never in the city i don't know. i like that "cheap cds! everything $10" place on pitt.

gaz (gaz), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 23:42 (twenty-two years ago)

and mojo, despite the name and the stock, cos my mate runs it.

gaz (gaz), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 23:43 (twenty-two years ago)

whats that place in hornsby? with the exclusive upper floor of second hand shit for visiting o/s djs? i've never been there but that attitiude sucks.
(nb might be talking through arse)

gaz (gaz), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 23:45 (twenty-two years ago)

melbourne
search:
*that vinyl shop on gertrude street, not the funk-old skool-soul jazz one run by the dude with the whiteboy afro, the other tiny little one that stocks dancehall and much interesting new electronic stuff. i haven't been there for a while, keep meaning to go back.

*jb hifi!!
*missing link
*cd discounts (and i thank jim once again for pointing this one out)

meh: central station = ok for dance/hip hop/rnb vinyl but you would have to be desperate to buy the monstrously overpriced cds there - jim says the other shops in melbourne are expensive but none of them have a patch on central station. they do have some interesting promos and stuff tho. i waited until their 20% off sale to get some of those, and the new discount price was just other shops' normal expensive.

destroy: rhythm & soul. dickhead pretty boys at the counter and in the window, crap selection, worst kind of snobbish boring shop. i ordered a todd edwards cd there and 1st they got me the wrong one, and then they just never got back to me. lame.

minna (minna), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 01:03 (twenty-two years ago)

also search: the rnb section at myer! hip hop selection is ok too. both these categories covered fairly well at hmv, but pricey.

minna (minna), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 01:06 (twenty-two years ago)

destroy: sanity

minna (minna), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 01:07 (twenty-two years ago)

That Gertrude St place sounds great. Damn it I promised myself I wouldn't buy any more music for a while but I'll have to go there now!

Jim underrates Dixons (Chapel St). It's great for dance and hiphop bargains. Not ultra-bargains but there's a lot of good stuff, or at least there was until I bought it all.

Nobody's mentioned Collector's Corner/Second Spin on Swanston so I will. Good stuff and not overpriced!

Keith McD (Keith McD), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 01:34 (twenty-two years ago)

i've never been terribly impressed by collector's corner. they've got a decent bundle of secondhand vinyl (v v important for a good store) i'll admit - and i have found a few collection-fillers there much to my delight.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 01:36 (twenty-two years ago)

well the upstairs is good

Keith McD (Keith McD), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 01:36 (twenty-two years ago)

keep in mind we're looking for rather different types of records :)

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 01:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I know, that's why I said that!

Keith McD (Keith McD), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 01:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Forgot to mention:

So Music, King St, Newtown
- for techno, world and experimental. Then you go further down the road to get your second hand rock records from Egg on Erskineville Rd. Check out their wonderful montages!

Reefer in Darlinghurst have a web page:

http://www.reeferrecords.com/reefer_800x600.htm

They also release their own records on associated label Ear Pimp.

Reefer has a fine selection of secondhand disco, techno and electro.

So does Spank Records, which fortunately is just nearby:

http://www.spankrecords.com.au/STOCK/vinyl.asp

They have the best selection of second hand disco, techno and electro in Sydney by a million miles.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 01:57 (twenty-two years ago)

That is, Reefer and Spank have the best selection, not just the latter.

There may be other places I haven't heard about, but these two together do me very nicely on my limited budget for electro, techno, house and disco.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 02:00 (twenty-two years ago)

*that vinyl shop on gertrude street, not the funk-old skool-soul jazz one run by the dude with the whiteboy afro, the other tiny little one that stocks dancehall and much interesting new electronic stuff. i haven't been there for a while, keep meaning to go back.

It's called Slap records.

I always check JB Hi-Fi first for new CDs because if they have something in stock they will be the cheapest, and I'm often surprised by what they do have.

Gaslight has quite a good selection of electronic stuff, no vinyl though.

I agree with minna about Rhythm & Soul, sadly because I used to shop there all the time, but lately they've been disappointing me. The last straw was when I asked if they had the last Blaze album and the person behind the counter said "what kind of music is it?"--and they're supposed to be house specialists!

Sydney: I was very impressed last time I was there with a record shop downstairs in Oxford St--I think it's called Reachin, does that sound right? It seemed to have a better microhouse selection than anywhere in Melbourne.

Angus Gordon (angusg), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 02:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes Angus, Reachin' is good for new electronic stuff, and quirky new dance stuff on vinyl. It's become particularly good over the last coupla years.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 02:05 (twenty-two years ago)

good groove? *ducks*

gaz (gaz), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 02:10 (twenty-two years ago)

*swing misses Gaz's head; reaches for his cane*

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 02:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Good to see that, on the dubious evidence of the number of postings, there are currently more good record stores in Aust than in US or UK. Go team go!

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 02:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh hang on. I'm an idiot.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 02:15 (twenty-two years ago)

whats utopia like these days? didn't they get a dance section?

gaz (gaz), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 02:26 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm told enthusiasms is good.

gaz (gaz), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 02:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Utopia's moved and gone more mainstream, but it's still the place to get your metal, so I've been told anyway.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 02:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Brisbane - Butterbeats fortitude valley is a truely excellent little record shop. mostly used vinyl and new vinyl/discs hiphop/dance/electronica/jazz but lots of used vinyl in everything. Also fab service for a specialist store rather than sporting tudes. Every recomendation the staff have given me has been a winner.

Others - Rocking Horse in the City is pretty good but lacks the warmth of Butterbeats.

Canberra - Landspeed and to a lesser extent Impact (both in civic) are where its at.

gallantseagull, Wednesday, 27 August 2003 05:34 (twenty-two years ago)

my favourite sydney record store is Disc on Oxford St, Paddington (opposite the Verona cinema and near the Ariel bookstore.)
Good range, very lovely staff who can remember yr name and can namedrop good recommendations and don't get snarly when you want to listen to a stack of records. Or maybe it's only when I go in there!
I haven't been there in ages though (due to not living a close bus ride away anymore), but I doubt there's been much of a shake-up. With it tucked between the cinemas, bookstores etc, I think of it as a prime black hole for wallets and money sacks.

speak_easy, Wednesday, 27 August 2003 11:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I was in Brisbane twice in the 90's and I remember buying loads of stuff. Maybe some of you can remind me of the names of the stores?

1. A large place in the main mall which had musical instruments as well. There was a large basement with second-hand stuff - loads of cheap CDs. Can't remember any vinyl. When I was there the Sex Pistols were playing in Brisbane - I think this was 96 - and I walked into this shop and Rotten and Jones were in there!! Also Skin from Skunk Anansie was with them - they were supporting I think.

2. A big place with tons of used vinyl laid out in a massive room. I think you had to go up some stairs to get there. There were T-shirts and stuff around the walls. Also lots of used CDs - they were marked with the price in thick felt tip on the jewel case, which was a bit odd!

3. A new CDs only shop with a yellow shop front. Bargain prices

Dr. C (Dr. C), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 12:45 (twenty-two years ago)

i live in sydney but order a lot of cd's from rockinghorse in brisbane, they seem to get a lot of stuff i can't find, or can't be assed to search out in sydney. they get it to me in two days usually. but otherwise, yeah redeye's ok, so music and egg in newtown are pretty good, and nearer to my place i like sandy's in dee why, or manly.

glenny g2003 (glenny g2003), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 21:46 (twenty-two years ago)

has no one mentioned greville records yet? also very good. my boyfriend was thrilled by the fact they have a Krautrock section..

jesus_was_a_gogo_dancer, Thursday, 28 August 2003 05:39 (twenty-two years ago)

their krautrock section is indeed quite good. but they are (wait for it) overpriced and their secondhand and vinyl selections aren't all that..

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 28 August 2003 06:01 (twenty-two years ago)

is anyone getting the impression i don't like paying A$32 for my CDs?

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 28 August 2003 06:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Nor do I Jim. It's secondhand all the way for me now. I won't pay more than $20 for a CD. And I won't pay for punk records.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Thursday, 28 August 2003 06:06 (twenty-two years ago)

3. A new CDs only shop with a yellow shop front. Bargain prices

this must either be jb hifi or the brisbane equivalent

minna (minna), Thursday, 28 August 2003 06:12 (twenty-two years ago)

JB kicks for new stuff. CDs on Spunk for $22! sweet!

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 28 August 2003 06:17 (twenty-two years ago)

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 28 August 2003 06:30 (twenty-two years ago)

minna (minna), Thursday, 28 August 2003 06:34 (twenty-two years ago)

minna (minna), Thursday, 28 August 2003 06:34 (twenty-two years ago)

but other than that, yeah, best ad ever

minna (minna), Thursday, 28 August 2003 06:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I won't pay more than $20 for a CD

i have come down to $5. $10 if its a new release or something i go "omygawd" at.

gaz (gaz), Thursday, 28 August 2003 09:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought 78s in Perth was very good too, loads of good old vinyl. There was a really good second hand stall in the Subiaco covered market too.

chris (chris), Thursday, 28 August 2003 09:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I love JB Hi-Fi - they're just as likely to have obscure indie/dancehall/microhouse/weird IDM/odd punk/metal/anything-really as any other shop, if not more, and they're always cheaper!

Last week I picked up Horsepower Productions' "In Fine Style" there for $5 and the second Output Comp (Channel 2) for $10. Insane!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 28 August 2003 11:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Tim, did you happen to pick up one of those copies of Herbert's "Let's all make mistakes" CD they had in JB's a few weeks ago? Because I wanted one and when I went back they were all gone. And then I noticed you wrote about it!

Angus Gordon (angusg), Thursday, 28 August 2003 12:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I choose to name any of the Melbourne stores the Good People took me to in September, all of which I'm sure have been named here.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 28 August 2003 13:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Last week I picked up Horsepower Productions' "In Fine Style" there for $5

What the fuck! I don't suppose they have any more copies?

Keith McD (Keith McD), Thursday, 28 August 2003 14:14 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah do they have more tim?? was it the city store?
past jb victories: i got thomas fehlmann - visions of blah for $10! and the trina album! and artful dodger presents re-rewind for $8. i also got the tweet album for $4 but it's a bit crap. i <3 jb

minna (minna), Thursday, 28 August 2003 15:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I got the Tweet and Artful Dodger too, and Hardfloor's acid mix for $10

Keith McD (Keith McD), Thursday, 28 August 2003 15:10 (twenty-two years ago)

minna - yes it was JB hi-fi. Anyone recognize the other 2 stores?

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 28 August 2003 15:12 (twenty-two years ago)

two years pass...
There's a beaut little place further down Erskineville Road, just before the Erskineville Railway, called Revibe Records. It's fairly new, about a year or so and has great prices on everything from techno and hip hop to the 70s and 80s and the biggest range of 50s and 60s records i've ever seen. With loads of rare, early aussie stuff. Only go if you have plenty of time, because they have heaps of packed shelves, plus the $2 bin out the front, where I found a copy of Johnny O'Keefe's 'Sing!', for $1.50. Other retailers had that rare recording up for $20 and more.
Brilliant place, worth going!!!
Revibe Records, Erskineville.

Another place in the city is Ashwoods Records. has mush of the same stuff as revibe, only with highr prices...located opposite The Queen Victoria Building in George Street.

Cameron Fahey, Friday, 28 April 2006 00:29 (nineteen years ago)

There used to be a GREAT used & new cd/vinyl shop in Oakleigh called Vinyl Solution. Picked up some awesome imports there during many misspent lunch hours. And he had a crazy vinyl collection. And in Oakleigh of all places. Don't know if it's still there though.

VegemiteGrrl (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 28 April 2006 01:13 (nineteen years ago)

the Erko store used to be half of Discovery Records in Hornsby, the BEST 2nd-hand shop in Sydney for about a decade early-90s to early-00s. The other former proprietor has had a place near the bottom of Glebe Point Road for a couple of years.

this thread revive is a month too late for me to help Donut Bitch!

kit brash (kit brash), Friday, 28 April 2006 05:29 (nineteen years ago)

five years pass...

Heading to Sydney in a few weeks and wanted to check out some used record stores if possible. Some of the ones upthread appear to be gone or internet only (i.e. Spank and Reefer). Any updated 2011 recommendations for used vinyl?

Thanks!
