I think Spoon's singles have gotten progressively better.
Some people might say the later Beatles singles were superior to their earlier ones.

Bruce Urquhart (Bruce Urquhart), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 23:57 (twenty-two years ago)

The Hollies, XTC, The Zombies.

Nom De Plume (Nom De Plume), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 00:19 (twenty-two years ago)

i greatly admire superchunk's continuing drive and ambition, but have they ever topped "slack motherfucker"?

fact checking cuz, Wednesday, 27 August 2003 00:20 (twenty-two years ago)

definitely. "driveway to driveway" for one.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 00:20 (twenty-two years ago)

i respectfully disagree, assuming that's allowed on ILM. if not, i disrespectfully disagree.

fact checking cuz, Wednesday, 27 August 2003 00:24 (twenty-two years ago)

do you mean folx who are clearly at the end of their career? cuz there are tons of bands who have been around for a few years and are better than ever. most bands probably do their best work in the middle of their careers. but when i read the question i thought of people like tom waits (who isn't exactly a singles artist, but was at his peak in the '90s) and the cure (who's last single was maybe someday i think? that was really good. and i'll take the singles from the last half of their career over the first half [tho not the albums, strangely enough]). i'm not sure what my point is. but the people on this thread so far don't seem particularly old.

will g. (will g.), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 00:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Was "Detriot Has A Skyline" a single for Superchunk? I fucking love that song....

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 00:57 (twenty-two years ago)

It wasn't a single but it is a really great song.

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 09:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Kylie's a good choice actually, but maybe that's more a case of increased credibility and coolness rather the songs actually being any better?

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 11:02 (twenty-two years ago)

surprised no-one has mentioned Radiohead, heh

No Doubt's last few singles were probably their best too i guess

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 11:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Scritti Politti are nigh on perfect example.

Venga, Wednesday, 27 August 2003 11:05 (twenty-two years ago)

No Steve the Kylie songs are better now.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 12:22 (twenty-two years ago)

surprised no-one has mentioned Radiohead, heh

That's because the topic wasn't "artists whose mid-period singles were better than their early ones."

Andrew Frye (paul cox), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 12:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I almost said Radiohead, in that "There There" > "High and Dry" > "Creep".

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 12:32 (twenty-two years ago)

age of chance. not wanting to be like a stuck record. but the stuff that was never officially released post Virgin dropping them were Ace (especially slow motion riot).
