NEW GORKY'S!

I just bought Sleep/Holiday and I'm listening to it for the first time now. Doesn't sound like their best album but certainly more diverse than "How I Long...". I really yearn for more kookiness from Euros and Co but they seem to be happy doing love ballads, which are all well and nice I suppose. Anyone else have this?

i've ordered it but i probably won't hear it for another week. doesn't come out in the usa until october, why is this? are they consumed and without free time while planning the big advertising push when that date comes? i am whiling away the time listening to their back catalog, what is this album nine and they are still in their 20s?

I had no idea it was out already. I shall be skipping to the shops later on. I am glad they dropped the kookiness ('How I Long..' is perhaps my favourite album).

You'll like Sleep/Holiday then. It is there most straitlaced one so far.

what Keith said -- I hope mine arrives in the mail before the holiday weekend!

I've got it outside in the car but I haven't listened to it yet (this is turning out to be a really informative thread, isn't it?!)

The Amazon review said that Mow The Lawn was nutty loud one though.

I'm going home to listen to it now.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 13:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Mow the Lawn has good lyrics but it's a crap tune, sadly.

dog latin (dog latin), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 16:05 (twenty-two years ago)

WHERE ARE THE TUNES, EUROS?

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 16:22 (twenty-two years ago)

The swooping arrangements, the gorgeous harmonies, the lyrics that cry for God knows what? And where's Megan?

Are they experimenting with a less ambitious approach? Maybe it's a grower. Bah.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 16:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe. They always do take a while to grow. I still haven't even managed to get into the last half of "How I Long".

dog latin (dog latin), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 16:44 (twenty-two years ago)

That's the worrying thing. All the other albumns, with the exception of 'The Blue Trees', have immediately grabbed me.

'Let Those Blue Skies'
'These Winds Are In My Heart'
'How I Long'

Come on dog!

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 16:47 (twenty-two years ago)

is it like 'the blue trees' then? I love that record. 'face like summer' may be his best song ever.

keith (keithmcl), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 23:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I liked Barafundle and Spanish Dance Troupe the bestest. I guess I got into those pretty instantly. I was listening to Bwyd Time properly for the first time the other day and I can imagine that one being techniquely the best. It's amazing, all the crazy ideas the Groky's had when they first came out (and so young too!). "The Game Of Eyes" and "Bloodchant" are fucking inspired, especially for a first album. Sleep/Holiday is terribly unambitious in comparison.

dog latin (dog latin), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 23:28 (twenty-two years ago)

mmm..

keith - 'The Blue Trees' is good, and 'Face Like Summer' is great. Overall it just doesn't match up to the full length albums that sandwich it, for me. Gorky's are one of those bands for which everyone has a different take on which their best and worst albums are.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 23:39 (twenty-two years ago)

well i am someone who will defend all of their albums almost equally though if pressed i guess 'barafundle' stands out most. apaprently most of the new one was recorded live in the studio. is it beautiful? that's mostly what i am hoping for.

keith (keithmcl), Thursday, 28 August 2003 00:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah - the live thing does make some sense. Maybe it's their Wild Honey. I still don't really like Wild Honey.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 28 August 2003 10:39 (twenty-two years ago)

It seems a bit over-done with the "beautifulness". Wild Honey is nice.

dog latin (dog latin), Thursday, 28 August 2003 13:14 (twenty-two years ago)

V. nice, but Friends/20/20 is a better pairing from that time.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 28 August 2003 13:41 (twenty-two years ago)

which gorky's members are in Pondman? has anyone heard this?

keith (keithmcl), Friday, 29 August 2003 23:34 (twenty-two years ago)

three years pass...
Anyone heard Euros' solo album 'Bore Da' that just leaked?

def zep (calstars), Friday, 9 February 2007 02:40 (nineteen years ago)

i think 'sleep/holiday' is highly underappreciated. no idea that he had a new one so soon. 'chops' took a bit of time to grow on me. there are lots of pretty ones, but some of them seem more like bits than songs.
more welsh songs on this one, it appears. at least welsh song titles.
