Listen. The city, it sings.

Last night someone told me Bryan Adams was the sound of British Columbia (he grew up there, he's allowed to be rude about it).
I've always thought that nothing says north London like early St Etienne.

If your city, state, province, whatever, was a song, or owned a record collection, what would that music be?

Anna (Anna), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 11:43 (twenty-two years ago)

North London = The Kinks, obviously

Dadaismus (Dada), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 11:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I think of Glasgow as a very indieish place and the godfathers of the scene would have to be the Pastels, but then again they'd mean nothing to the vast majority of Glaswegians and that should somehow make a difference.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 11:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Similarly, the Kinks for current day North London. But maybe I am spoiling this game with my cultural diversity qualms.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 11:51 (twenty-two years ago)

N, how dare you insult the great city of Glasgow by even mentioning The Pastels!

Dadaismus (Dada), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 11:52 (twenty-two years ago)

What about Arab Strap?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 11:53 (twenty-two years ago)

They're from fucking Falkirk or some such hellhole

Dadaismus (Dada), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 11:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Arab Strap are from Falkirk, n'est ce pas?

Johnboy, Wednesday, 27 August 2003 11:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Arab Strap may be from Falkirk but see what valued members of the Glasgow community they are.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 11:58 (twenty-two years ago)

i find it disappointing that west yorkshire has so little to get across its feel. i guess Hood and Random Number get the rainy desolate streets feel

as for london, st etienne is perfect for the north london feel, also, for london, i would say

manix - alright wid me (tek 9 remix)
flowered up - its on
code 071 - a london sumtin'
criminal minds - baptized by dub
hackney hardcore - caught with a spliff
b15 project - girls like us
st etienne - marios cafe
sabres of paradise - chapel street market 9am
stamford hill cru - dis wan a gwan (n15 dub plate)

and new york?

Metropolis ~ I Love New York of course, also bob james - angela

gareth (gareth), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 12:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Tenuous at best! Nice to see Coatbridge getting a mention on ILM though, albeit indirectly.

Johnboy, Wednesday, 27 August 2003 12:01 (twenty-two years ago)

where does autechre fit in gareth?

toby (tsg20), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 12:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Baltimore: any K-Swift club mix.
Brooklyn: Biggie, duh.
Syracuse: Earth Crisis.

And that's all the places I've ever lived, except for a year in Twickenham (outside London) when I was 9, at which point it was Michael Jackson's Bad. I don't really know what it is now.

Tom Breihan (Tom Breihan), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 12:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Pulp are my all-purpose excuse for still living in South Yorkshire, I like to think they have the Sheffield/Rotherham/Doncaster area covered quite nicely. Though, um, they got out, so no excuses for me really.

Alex in Rotherham (Alex in Doncaster), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 12:38 (twenty-two years ago)

like them or not, the sound of my city is U2.

DV (dirtyvicar), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 12:39 (twenty-two years ago)

And amazingly, U2 are about to get their own, spectacularly ugly, Dublin skyscraper.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 12:42 (twenty-two years ago)

The Boston area = Modern Lovers

Metropolis ~ I Love New York of course

the Casiopea version kicks its ass.

animal wrangler (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 16:05 (twenty-two years ago)

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, Donut Bitch.

(That song is almost like somebody commissioned an NYC hater to write a song celebrating the city, only for everyone to hear it wanting to destroy the place.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 16:06 (twenty-two years ago)

"new york is the city with gusto"

animal wrangler (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 16:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I heart Anna so much right now for starting this thread.

David. (Cozen), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 16:10 (twenty-two years ago)

St. Louis is so Nelly, although it oddly enough used to be Sammy Hagar.

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 16:37 (twenty-two years ago)

A sign of evolution (arguably lateral).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 16:40 (twenty-two years ago)

melbourne would be "i was right" by underground lovers
