What is the source of the term eightbar?

I'm trying to understand the meaning of the term eightbar as an alternative to garage rap or grime. Is it simply because in most cases a song's key loop phrase appears to be eight beats long? (My only real evidence is the Dizzee record). They certainly aren't eight bars long, unless tempo is defined at hyperspeed.

maybe it's some code. like hidden Beatles messages.

Boy in da Corner is not an album of eightbars. Eightbars are minimal instrumentals used as backing tracks for live rapping on pirate radio. Most of them have one loop for eight bars, then another loop for eight bars, then repeat. The only eightbars by Dizzee that I know of are 'Hoe' and 'Go'. The one that started it all was Musical Mob's 'Pulse X'.

Aha, that helps. Thanks for the answer. I just keep hearding the term 'eightbar' used in the same breath as the Dizzee disc. I'll seek out some real eightbar and educate myself.
