Polyphonic Spree axed by label

Susie, Wednesday, 27 August 2003 20:51 (twenty-two years ago)

the riders were too expensive i suspect

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 20:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I just made the exact same joke as stevem on MSN.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 20:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Good.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 21:00 (twenty-two years ago)

does their hollywood deal not apply in the UK?

bill stevens (bscrubbins), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 21:04 (twenty-two years ago)

*note to self...get some new material...*

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 21:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Perhaps they can get a gig backing up Foreigner and U2. Hope they saved some money from that car commercial.

Nom De Plume (Nom De Plume), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 21:35 (twenty-two years ago)

it was iPod.

billstevejim, Wednesday, 27 August 2003 21:38 (twenty-two years ago)

It's all capitalism.

Nom De Plume (Nom De Plume), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 21:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Yay!

mei (mei), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 22:12 (twenty-two years ago)

foolish label, i hope this doesnt make them cancel their new orleans show. they already cancelled one earlier this year and broke my heart.

Felcher (Felcher), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 22:26 (twenty-two years ago)

This must only apply to them in the UK.

Ben Boyer (Ben Boyer), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 22:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, annoying sickly sweet uptempo americana band get dropped, useless band.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 22:45 (twenty-two years ago)

it's weird they were on 679, which I'm sure I read somewhere is run by the guy who supposedly provided the vocals for Grafiti's 'What is The problem' (even though this is surely a duet between he and Mike Skinner if not just Skinner's voice itself). 679 clearly have designs on being the new XL Recordings by signing American alt-rock acts alongside credible UK dance teams, but I don't know what there were expecting of the Spree exactly.

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 23:06 (twenty-two years ago)

'Soldier Girl' did reasonably well as a single here

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 23:06 (twenty-two years ago)

they shoulda stayed on fierce panda

679 drop a band every week

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 23:41 (twenty-two years ago)

next week it'll be the Stanton Warriors? I guess this is just a case of the Spree failing to return the investment of them by the labe? I mean what the hell are the Webb Brothers doing on there - I haven't heard anything by them for 2 or 3 years now

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 23:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Polyphonic Spree = Americana?

Huh?

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Thursday, 28 August 2003 03:59 (twenty-two years ago)

fuck the Polyphonic Spree. I live right here in Dallas and routinely don't walk 3 blocks to see them.

Aaron A., Thursday, 28 August 2003 04:27 (twenty-two years ago)

That's because it's hot. I wouldn't walk three blocks for a private concert with Lou Reed.

The last Dallas-area band I went to see was Lucy Loves Schroeder. In January.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Thursday, 28 August 2003 05:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I mean, they're a gimmick, right. A Flaming Lips knockoff wrapped in a choir, whoo-huh.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 28 August 2003 13:40 (twenty-two years ago)

God, can you imagine how expensive it would have been to send that band on tour? No wonder they got dropped.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 28 August 2003 13:52 (twenty-two years ago)

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 28 August 2003 14:02 (twenty-two years ago)

yucky americana vocals, and sickly sweet harmonies - it's not British !

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 28 August 2003 14:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Steve, I got a 50p record of the Webbs remixed by Manitoba and Faster last week. It's from this year.

Barima (Barima), Thursday, 28 August 2003 14:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Their album was very very good, I thought. Very engaging. What do you want, the new Strokes LP?

gage o (gage o), Thursday, 28 August 2003 14:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Even the new Strokes LP would be preferable.

I hope this means I never have to hear them again, ever :)

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 28 August 2003 14:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Au Revouir a stupid piece of novelty bobbins. Never grace these shores again.

Lynskey (Lynskey), Thursday, 28 August 2003 14:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Barima that sounds good, is it?

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 28 August 2003 15:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I love Dallas-area bands. the spree, however, can suck my nuts. They invade my dive bar every Tuesday when they are in town. Which means I have to find a new bar on Tuesdays. bastards.

Texas Sam (thatgirl), Thursday, 28 August 2003 18:06 (twenty-two years ago)

they frequent ships lounge?

:(

gareth (gareth), Thursday, 28 August 2003 18:13 (twenty-two years ago)

yes, sadly, Gareth.

Texas Sam (thatgirl), Thursday, 28 August 2003 18:14 (twenty-two years ago)

couldnt you go to muddy waters? at least boysnamedsue might be playing there, which is a far far better proposition:)

gareth (gareth), Thursday, 28 August 2003 18:16 (twenty-two years ago)

yes! see: Dallas-area-bands-which-don't-suck

Texas Sam (thatgirl), Thursday, 28 August 2003 18:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Put anthrax in their drinks, the stupid hippies.

Larcole (Nicole), Thursday, 28 August 2003 18:25 (twenty-two years ago)

They'll be back. Just you wait. Next time as a power trio!

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Thursday, 28 August 2003 18:39 (twenty-two years ago)

How can the Spree fit in a bar anyway?

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 28 August 2003 18:41 (twenty-two years ago)

good point! the WHOLE Spree piles into Ships? maybe I do want to see that.

Aaron A., Thursday, 28 August 2003 19:06 (twenty-two years ago)

gareth (gareth), Thursday, 28 August 2003 19:11 (twenty-two years ago)

is that a Brothel?

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 28 August 2003 19:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Dallas-area-bands-which-don't-suck

Hmmm... Centro-Matic, Deathray Davies, Darlington, the Old 97's, Virbolux (their "I'll Be Home For Christmas" is my favorite song by any Dallas band ever)

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Thursday, 28 August 2003 19:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Put anthrax in their drinks, the stupid hippies.

Goddamn! :-)

(I stand by my 'Primal Scream with a Mike Curb Congregation jones instead of the Stooges/MC5' assessment.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 28 August 2003 19:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Milo: Slick 57, Boys Named Sue, Riverboat Gamblers, Sunday Drunks, Gospel Swingers (RIP) . .

Throw in their followers and random hipsters and Tuesdays at Ships can be SRO, not good.

Texas Sam (thatgirl), Friday, 29 August 2003 02:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm still boycotting Slick 57 because of that Dallas Observer photograph with the sideways trucker hats and Blink 182-esque pose.

The Gospel Swingers broke up? Damn, I saw them once, with Dead Sexy.

There are a lot of good bands in Dallas, it's just that the ones that are popular - or at least those pushed by the Observer and Josh at the Edge - are boring (if not complete crap).

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Friday, 29 August 2003 02:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Forget not Pleasant Grove, brothers and sisters! My personal pick of Dallas bands. Flying Burrito Bros. meets, um, indie rock... less self-conscious than Beachwood Sparks or My Morning Jacket. More gooder.

Aaron A., Friday, 29 August 2003 02:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Dead Sexy another good RIP. Kevin from DS is now in the Sunday Drunks. Yes, Pleasant Grove! Didn't Joe Butcher (steel) leave them for the Spree? boo. . .

Texas Sam (thatgirl), Friday, 29 August 2003 02:24 (twenty-two years ago)

My favorite local album for a long time was PiNKSTON's EP. I think they broke up too, after taking three years to record an album.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Friday, 29 August 2003 02:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Have either of you seen Eisley live? Seems a bit gimmicky, but the music is great.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Friday, 29 August 2003 02:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I avoid Trees and Clearview pretty much by default. So no.

Texas Sam (thatgirl), Friday, 29 August 2003 02:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I haven't been to Ellum in ages. No fun fighting traffic and not being able to get ragingly drunk. My kingdom for mass transit.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Friday, 29 August 2003 02:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I stick close by in the hood. Ships, Muddy Waters, The Cavern - all within 3-7 blocks of my house. Double Wide and Bar of Soap about 3-4 miles.

EDT reprezent, yo!

Texas Sam (thatgirl), Friday, 29 August 2003 02:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Too expensive having to book the largest studios all the time to have enough space for all band members...

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 29 August 2003 11:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw the Spree twice in the last month (at festivals in the UK)
Well.. they were shit BOTH times and I was dissappointed
Bye bye Spree...
