Barbra Streisand's version of "Jingle Bells". She's outta control, it's Xmas and she's FREAKING OUT, why can't she sound like this all the time?

Re: Early 70s Cher. "Half Breed", "Dark Lady", "Gypsies, Tramps, & Thieves", "The Way of Love"-she really was on quite a winning streak back then, wasn't she?

Novelty is not the same thing as camp .
One is meant to be Kitsch, one is inetrepetive.

i think camp is good, and i do love it - give me a shirley bassey anyday over a creed song....I don't know, I idenitfy with it, my eyelashes flutter whenever I hear barbara sigh during the way we were, and fuck me dead with a toothpick if i don't serenade my final hours with dionee warwick's greatest hits....henry rollins is camp tooo.

Geoff, Tuesday, 14 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I agree Geoff. No straight man is that obseesed with the gy thing as he delicatly put it .

anthony, Tuesday, 14 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I don't understand the concept of "camp." Could someone please explain?

Lyra, Tuesday, 14 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

camp is over the top (shirley's goldfeeeenger), melodramtaic (we _will_ remember from babs), possibly out of proportion to reality (ie mucho anger of rollins) and occasionally with the twist of wry ie lou reed

camp2 (kmp) n. An affectation or appreciation of manners and tastes commonly thought to be artificial, vulgar, or banal. Banality, vulgarity, or artificiality when deliberately affected or when appreciated for its humor: “Camp is popularity plus vulgarity plus innocence” (Indra Jahalani).

I think this defintion lacks an aprrecaitioon for the self refential aspect of it.

"half-breed" is my birthday #1! how cool.

the way this is going, anthony, i'm thinking your question shd read "and i ended up loving it." what's the conflict, exactly?

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 14 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yeah - I love things because they are camp, not despite it. Cf. Kylie Minogue's Your Disco Needs You.

Ally, Tuesday, 14 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

David Bowie: "Rock 'N' Roll Suicide".

Kodanshi, Tuesday, 14 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I will now have Kylie Minouge in my head all day Ally.

anthony, Tuesday, 14 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Thank you for the definition.

I'm not sure if I would count Iggy Pop as camp. I might.

Lyra, Wednesday, 15 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

So let's dance thru all of this, war is over for a bit, the whole world should be moving thru your heart, your lonely heart (your disco, your disco, your disco NEEDS YOU!!!). We had a whole dance routine but my dance partner moved away.

Sorry - my fault! I missed off that final FONT tag for some reason. Won't happen again...
