I just heard The Telescopes tonight for the first time and I thought they were really good. Which album is the best one to pick up? Thanks

Taste is really very good, in a pretty scuzzy sort of way, and the singles were frequently good too. Anyone know of anyone else who mined that nastier side of the shoegazer-ish seam?

That Creation-era self-titled LP is completely different: all washed out and drowsy, but still not bad, even though I seldom seem to listen.

So, was last year's comeback up to much?

I'd think so but I need to give the new songs more of a listen -- there's a new compilation that just came out in the States that's pretty nicely split between the noise and drifty parts of their first incarnation.

The last Telescopes record was really, really good, and went very unrecognized. The piano playing on it is particularly top notch. It's more along the lines of Hood than anything else. Towers above the Unisex stuff although the lineup is essentially the Unisex lineup. I'm not crazy about Taste, the Creation album is excellent. If you get a chance to see them live, do, it's a weird experience. I tried to soundboard their show last November but the MD fucked up. They improvise almost everything with samplers and bizarre instruments. Stephen told me that their first comeback gig as the Telescopes doing this stuff was in Stoke and they got roundly booed and everyone walked out!

Hadn't we already done a Telescopes Classic or Dud? The general opinion was Classic.

I've not got the latest Telescopes LP, but I picked up the Unisex LP recently and was pleasantly surprised - a few odd moments but generally excellent, one or two songs nearly as good as the Creation era Telescopes, which is pretty high praise. I've yet to see the compilation, but the track listing looks pretty tasty - I'd buy it just for "Pure sweetest ocean" alone - and I hope that the early tracks have been remastered as "Taste" itself is a bit sludgy.

two years pass...

stephen was on Freak Zone yesterday talking about his antenna stuff and the telescopes etc. seemed a bit hard going at times, sentences trailing off... antenna stuff seems to fall just outside what i consider to be music though 8)

but nice to know he's still alive.

I saw them live recently. If you like drone, they were great. The recent EP I bought was great too.
