his labor songs became huge pop hits. the lefty progressiveness of the lyrics just came off like hardbitten common sense. search: "dark as a dungeon" and "sixteen tons" and further tons more i'm sure.

It's not every musician who gets a whole instrumental technique named after him. Merle didn't invent "Travis picking" (Bartok didn't invent the Bartok pizzicatto, either) but he was certainly its most proficient practicioner up to that point.

There are a buncha hit collection out there; any one that collects the above mentioned folky numbers, the guitar instrumentals, and the big hits ("Re-enlistment Blues, Smoke Smoke Smoke, Divorce Me COD, etc.) would be a fine thing to own.
