My band mates trying to convince me at 13 that I needed to tune my bass to standard tuning so that I would be tuned to the rest of the band. I thought that sucked so I quit that band the next day. I have not been in a band ever since. I spent the next year making weird cassettes of noise I made with my bass in my room.

In hindsight it makes a lot of sense.

that sounds fun

99% of my band fights are about the others forgetting how the song goes

A singer songwriter in one band I was in was trying to teach another guy in the band a keyboard part, and when he couldn't get it, muttered 'It'd be quicker to train an ape'. How charming!

the other 1% is about someone hitting on/sleeping with another band mates significant other.

All of us are in even-tempered tuning -- why do you insist upon playing in just intonation? Lamonte? Why won't you answer me?

C'mon guys - you're missing the ones about people turning up late (again) or without some vital piece of equipment (again) or too pissed / stoned to play properly (again) or without enough money to pay for their share of the rehearsal room (again) or....

DQ (paying £150 a day in studio): Ummm, this is WAY out of time. The tempo is all over the place. Try playing to a click this time.

Drummer:(mumbles)

DQ: What?

Drummer: I don't think that's a very good idea

DQ: Why not?

Drummer: Because then it will sound robotic and mechanical.

DQ: Well that's better than it slowing down the whole time. OK let's get the click on.

Drummer:(holds up hands in 'wait' gesture)I'm not good with clicks, I don't think I can do it. In fact I'm SURE I c-c-c-can't d-d-d-d-do it (turns green)

DQ: (anxiously watching clock) OK, forget that track. We'll do it another time. OK for this one, there's an 'improv' section. I want it incredibly noisy and chaotic. Just thrash all over the kit. Whatever you want. Just don't play any 'beats', OK! Just noise! Fun, huh? OK tape rolling...

(Drummer starts doing retard versh of Joy Division trance beat)

DQ: WHAT the FUCK are you DOING!!!?

(Enter Bass Player)

BP: Hey Dave...?

DQ: What?

BP: Do you have the number for a cab?

DQ: ?

BP: I think I'm sick.

DQ: Well there's a couch in the other room. Go lie down.

BP: No, I mean REALLY sick. I think I ate a bad burger...I'm going to puke any second...just get me a cab, I have to go home!! (grabs wastebasket and makes retching noises)

Drummer: (moronic grin) Hey guys! I think I can do a straight beat now!!!

FOUR MONTHS LATER

(DQ gets reimbursed by ex-band members for their share of studio expenses. All dreams of world conquest destroyed, DQ contemplates career as librarian somewhere in the southeastern Yukon Territory)

"You spent the money I gave you for gas, so we could get to the practice space, on imported pasta? I quit!"

No gas in Jon's truck, so I had to walk home.

Stephen Boyle (SBoyle), Friday, 29 August 2003 16:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I think this:

All of us are in even-tempered tuning -- why do you insist upon playing in just intonation? Lamonte? Why won't you answer me?

would be more realistic if it was this:

All of us showed you what just intonation is -- why do you insist upon writing us out of the history? La Monte? Why won't you let us hear the tapes?
