i can't wait for this record to finally come out (on delicious vinyl later in the fall). i've actually got most of the stuff on the sampler already - in true dancehall fashion the album looks rather like it's going to be pretty much a compilation of previously released 7"s - but listening to several tracks in a row by this artist, i could really see her going the same way as sean paul and wayne wonder - given the right promotional push. after all, if sean paul and blu cantrell can get to no1 in the uk charts, i see no reason why he and ce'cile can't with "can u do di work". anyway, ce'cile's lovely, with a voice like honey (singing and toasting over rhythms including jeremy harding's "liquid", baby g's "20 cent" and scatta's new "coolie dance". personal fave: "gets no love" on the "juice" rhythm, wicked uptempo soca-influenced party tune and then some. anyone love this lady as much as i do?

nah i haven't yet, would like to, but haven't been shopping in a few weeks and am not on soulseek as i have a mac with a shitey dial-up connection... only prob being that as this is on delicious i think it might not get as much promo as if it were on vp... she needs to be written about lots...

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Friday, 29 August 2003 13:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Agreed. Idonno if she'll (or any female dancehall performer, frankly) will ever blow up like Sean "Dutty yeh" Paul. I think Ce'cile's great--and I think Tonya Stephens is even better, but I worry about their potential in the US. In the UK it seems like there'd be more of a chance.

cybele (cybele), Friday, 29 August 2003 15:00 (twenty-two years ago)

hence the reason that they should rerelease can you do the work with sean paul right sharpish and capitalize on his star being in the ascendant... if they don't do this they = mental, coz it's a great record and that's after me playing it absolutely to death for about 2 years... get me running a record label now!!!

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Friday, 29 August 2003 15:03 (twenty-two years ago)

and btw cybele - tanya stephens vvv good live... your friend was lying...

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Friday, 29 August 2003 15:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Totally unrelated--yet sorta related--question. I get where you're coming from--they do need to rerelease so much shit. People are ready for it.

Thing is, what I wonder is why something like Sizzla's "Da Real Thing" hasn't broken. It's a PHENOMENAL album and it beats "Dutty Rock" any day. "Simplicity," "Solid as a Rock," "Bless Up"--all wicked tunes. They're all not too too rasta and religious. Also, "Got it Right Here" seems to me like it'd be a hit with the kids (the line "Smokin' marijuana like we just don't care" strikes me as something any 15-year old would like). "Woman I Need You," "Mamma," and "Just One of Those Days" are great tunes for the ladies...and Sizzla is a pretty hot looking bobo dread.

What does VP need to do to get Sizzla to break?

cybele (cybele), Friday, 29 August 2003 16:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, and "Boom and Go Through" would so work as a hip hop crossover tune.

"What does VP need to do to get Sizzla to break?"

Most of the Sizzla records that get played on dancehall radio shows seem to be his softer ballad types like "Old-Skool" - I don't think he has a profile for club-bangers. Which is a shame b/c his stuff on the club-banger grooves is usually amazing. I changed my mind of Egyptian - I like Sizzla's "These R Da Days" more than "Sweet To The Belly" even!

Also "Let The Children Grow" (on Sign) is endearingly bizarre.

actually right now theres a lovely and radiant boot of never scared with sizzla's 'solid as a rock' accapella over the top, the first verse at least before it goes back to bonecrusher. it's doing v well, the song just got reused for ja rule's comeback single in fact so really all VP or whoever need to do is put a face to voice and follow up their serendipity

'endearingly bizarre': i often find supposedly extinct dub producer magick resurges when sizzla comes on a modern riddim, he's like a portal back! his eerie beatless turn on nimble riddim is one of my faves this year, espesh with that keith hudson reissue lying around. also LUMIDEEE like ESG like w. gibbons like...

Chip Morningstar (bob), Saturday, 30 August 2003 09:52 (twenty-two years ago)

i think people are ready for a rootsier revival now after a summer of mentalism

Chip Morningstar (bob), Saturday, 30 August 2003 09:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Tim--right on. Sizzla can hold down a bashment selection like nobody else...well, nobody else but Capleton.

The range these guys have is amazing.

cybele (cybele), Saturday, 30 August 2003 14:33 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...
Did this ever end up being released? Or is this in just pre-release limbo with more current riddims being added?

Jedmond (Jedmond), Monday, 13 September 2004 22:26 (twenty-one years ago)

the latter, I believe.
I would eat an omelette off your ass to get a copy of this.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 05:27 (twenty-one years ago)
