I had heard they scrapped the album they were working on and reconvening next year to start afresh. So who knows whats really happening.

there was a blurb about it in the August Mojo. I'm feeling a even more geeky than usual today so...

reocorded at Rockfield Sutdios, Monmouth, Wales

started with producer Tom Rothrock, but abandoned that to produce themselves.

19 tracks recorded that will be pared down.

pro-tools and tape manipulation, where Hot Shots 2 was mostly pro-tools. return to Three EP sound according to Mason.

Band has been listening to Timbaland, the Neptunes, Dre, and '70s Eno.

four songs names are Simple, Troubles, She's So Wonderful, and Easy.

So it's business as usual.

Yup. From At Ease (who got their info from the NME): "The Beta Band have revealed that Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich will work on their new album. The Beta Band have supported Radiohead on their North American tour in 2001. In a message posted on the band's website, singer Steve Mason explained that the band are happy with the results. 'He's (Godrich) working at Mayfair Studios in London. Me and Rich (Greentree, bass) went down at the weekend to see what he's doing to our LP and its all good! 'Looks like 12 tracks will go on the record out of the 17 we recorded,' he explained. 'Mixing will be done in two weeks and the LP will be out in February.'"

they tried to get neptunes to produce HSII i heard but, er, couldn't afford them. steve mason put something on the website a while ago when he said the new album was going to sound like "the milky way in a teacup." that's what i thought HSII sounded like but still...

Yeah, Spymob are friends from Norfolk, VA, I think. The Neps will work with people for cheap if they like them, but will whore themselves out for odd tracks to make the megabucks. They must be at least 10 times more expensive than Godrich.

How would that work if the Neptunes produced the Beta Band? In the Neptunes' world, "produce" means "create all the music except for the vocals." Would the Beta Band just let the Neptunes make the album & then come in for a couple of days to lay down vocals?

Yeah I don't think The Neptunes would be such a good idea. Would prefer Nellee Hooper circa mid-nineties - he could give the band a really smoooove brit-soul/nu-jack-swing/trip hop panache feel!

According to Pause & Play the forthcoming Beta Band album is: Heroes to Zeroes that is scheduled for an April release.

Elsewhere, Opal Music report a UK release date of April 26th. A single: Assessment will be released April 12th.

this album won't blow anyone away. it's consistent. it's rocking. the second track has a nice space-y groove. still a bit unremarkable. betas still poor at getting the balance right over the course of a record (like the super furry animals).

saw them play at the ICA last night and the new songs sounded very good live. the album hasn't grabbed me yet. there are some very nice songs. i think it's a 'good' album. with good songs and good lyrics. i think it's the first 'good' album they've made, but it's still not as good as Hot Shots, if that makes sense. it feels less...visionary? more prosaic.

The release date in the U.S. is TUESDAY!!

I was in a record shop today in fact and they were playing "It's not too Beautiful to me now..." And I SWOOONED! That told me that whoever worked there and put it on must be foaming at the mouth about the upcoming new album as much as I am. I just can't take it! I want to have it in my sweaty hands already.

Look, I was never a BB fanatic. Honestly. I just thought they were pretty cool. But I just have this FEELING that this new album is going to blind side me. And in any case, I think they beat Radiohead's ass because they are still refusing to get stuck in a rut!

Okay I'll be quiet now. (deep breath, stay calm, it's only a matter of days) I'll probably be back again in a week's time complaining about how I'm disappointed. NO Damnit I refuse to believe it!

I have it now. I've played it. I don't understand how people can be disappointed. It sounds *different* and to me that's what counts. Beats the crap out of Radiohead's stale predicament, and if I don't like it just a little tiny bit more than the new Orbital, it's certainly a worthy contender.

This is a direct descendant of the Beatles, and to me, that's the litmus test for Class A British pop/rock.

Okay, I'm listening to the new one now, and it sounds EXACTLY like what I wanted Hot Shots to sound like. It builds on the momentum that i felt with the ep's and first album. The new one even sounds like it was recorded BEFORE hot shots. Was Hot Shots some sort of willful deflation of a growing popularity? That would be kinda crazy. I haven't actually read anything about the band since the first album. I didn't hate hot shots, but i never listened to it after buying it. Probably 3 times altogether since i bought it. I've listened to those 2 side-long seascape ambient numbers that were scrapped from the first album more than that.

Strongo's hype really makes me want to revisit Hot Shots II, even though at the time I thought most of it sounded like Sting (I dug "Squares" though, and that "To You Alone" single was terrif). I'm hoping I'll get to hear a promo of this through one of my usual sources.

This is great! I've never liked them all that much before, but this album is definitely making an impression on me. Maybe I need to go back and listen to their older stuff, but yeah, I agree with Scott; this is how I've always wanted them to sound.
