Best offhand piss-taking.

Circa Moon Safari, a friend of mine couldn't remember Air's name and referred to them as "that band that sounds like the theme from Taxi." I enjoy Air, but had to admit that this was clever and biting and a pretty perfect thing to say.

So ... any other spot-on, offhand disses of bands?

The other day, a friend of mine said the singer from The Strokes was to Lou Reed what Christian Slater is to Jack Nicholson.

Couple others I just remembered --

On the last Sundays record: "So the kid wrote this one?"

As the vocals entered a Modest Mouse track: "Is this that Kids of Widney High thing?"

A friend of mine worked at a record store and this fellow in his mid- 40's sporting the dreaded ugly-golf-shirt/Dockers/loafers combination came in asking if they had the new Eric Clapton. "No." Well, why not? "Because there's nothing sadder on planet earth than yuppie air guitar."

So I was in my favorite record store the other day, and this teenage kid comes up to the counter with the new Train album, asking the hipster clerk: "Do you know if this is any good, dude?" to which he received the reply: "Just like McDonald's." Kinda' mean, but too funny not to mention.

At seventeen, a buddy and I were in his room, stoned out of our gourds, with a red lightbulb in the lamp, listening to Slayer. His dad openened the door. "What the hell are you listening to?" We told him. "Sounds like people fighting..." and he shut the door.

Someone talking about Strangelove - "Who's that band, you know, they're just like Suede except nobody likes them"

My brother compared Neil Young's voice to Kermit the Frog's voice.

Co-worker I once had, hated guitar music and we always argued over the stereo quite viciously. He constantly needled me about me tastes but the one time he got me to lose my rag was when I put on 'Doolittle' and he just mechanically intoned the words "Quiet bit...loud bit...quiet bit...loud bit..." like a Dalek throughout

My father has said Velvet Underground imitates Bob Dylan (I can't stand Bob Dylan!), Belle and Sebastian are boring teen angst pop, Radiohead is "more teen angst," punk is "jump up and down and go nowhere music," and heavy metal "sounds constipated." My mother describes most rock as "broken washing machine music."

Gareth: Well, this was during the initial period when Air were supposed to be Very Important Brilliant Visionaries. The fact that most of their record sounded like the theme from an old television show poked a nice little hole in the ballooning praise.

Keith Jarrett's Koln Concert = Schroeder's playing on Peanuts (my sister's mother-in-law). She had a point: it sounded like he was really pounding on the keys when she said it.

A friend refused to listen to Momus for a year because she was afraid he wrote sarcastic songs about people like her.

My dad once put on Blur and said, "He sounds like Dick Van Dyke. I hate that fucker". It was easily the best album criticism I ever heard. I wish I came up with anything even comparable to that.

The Air = Theme From Taxi (which is actually called "Angela," a very Air title, don't you think?) is perfect. They have the same effect on me, but in my case both are positive. The Theme From Taxi always choked me up, believe it or not.

Speaking of "Believe It Or Not," also known as "The Theme From The Greatest American Hero," does anyone else notice a resemblance b/tw this song & Daft Punk's "Digital Love"?

"Digital Love" is totally "Theme From The Greatest American Hero" to me. That's not a pisstake either;0)

Mark, Thursday, 16 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Breathy vocals, major fourths and sixths as melodic intervals? In any case, yes, "Theme from Greatest American Hero" is a tremendous tune.

"I stamp on the feet of anyone wearing trainers" - David Hemingway in live review of, unbelievably, *Geneva* of all people, Melody Maker, late October / early November 1996.

"(such and such a record) is as provocative as a biro top.

Biro top here, reviewing Tracy Chapman. She has a nice acoustic guitar, those are the ones made of wood, and she sings songs that she writes all by herself ..." - Chris Roberts, singles page, Melody Maker, w/e 10th February 1990.

Robin Carmody, Thursday, 16 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Actually, I think that might have been "stamp on the *toes*" ...

Robin Carmody, Thursday, 16 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ally's dad truly is a master of the put-down, based on that alone. I'd love to see him do the weekly singles in the NME or something like that. "Stupid teabag shit." "Assholes." "Morons."

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 16 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

A friend of mine's dad told him he'd probably get somewhere with his music career if he had someone other than me playing drums. "He sounds like a spastic trapped inside a 44 gallon drum". I was very proud of this.
