There are some moods where it's pretty damn hard for any song to do this, quite frankly, but these are some that come as close as anything else could

Yes - "I've Seen All Good People", "Starship Trooper"
Michael Torke - Color Music
Steve Reich - Tehillim
Andrew WK - I Get Wet (the whole thing)
Stooges - "1970" used to be the last-resort option at one point but I really haven't listened in years.
possibly, Oren Ambarchi - "Suspension"

sundar subramanian (sundar), Saturday, 30 August 2003 01:24 (twenty-two years ago)

"You're My Best Friend" is a good choice. I actually hear "Wouldn't It Be Nice" as kind of sad.

briania, Sunday, 31 August 2003 15:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I actually hear "Wouldn't It Be Nice" as kind of sad.

Me too! It's melancholy as hell, because you know the intense emotions and desires it contains aren't going to last forever, and you know the singer will eventually get everything he wants, but by the time he gets it he won't want it quite as much.

Anyway, on topic...

Dusty Springfield, "Sunny"
Jacques Brel, "La valse a mille temps"
The Jackson Five, "I Want You Back"
CeCe Peniston, "Finally"

I think my immediate association with the word "uplifting" in relation to music includes something just a little beyond simply being cheered up, but anyway, as this is one of my favourite properties of music, I have some I think are really stellar:

something good by the utah saints, which samples kate bush's cloudbusting ("ooo-oo I just know that something good is gonna happen") ah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

the techno sesame street theme, sesame's treet by the Smart E's

rez by Underworld

the co2 mix of the B 52s' revolution earth though this has an element of sadness but it's incredible sweeping ahhh looking at the stars music [by the way this version is very hard to track down - can anyone help me get it???? - I lost both my copies, which were firstly the b-side to the cassingle and secondly an mp3]

the B-52s generally - well "Love Shack" and maybe "dirty back roads"? heaps by them I'm sure.

going down to liverpool by the Bangles can be uplifting if you're on the dole!

What about "jump jump" by Kriss Kross...!

cuspidorian (cuspidorian), Monday, 1 September 2003 10:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Not really a "song", but the fifth part of Angel Passage, Alan Moore's spoken-word-with-music about William Blake, is absolutely fantastic.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 1 September 2003 12:37 (twenty-two years ago)

SplendidMullet (iamamonkey), Monday, 1 September 2003 14:16 (twenty-two years ago)

"You doo right? Uplifting?"

Hell yes. Listen to Malcolm's words; check out those
key changes; dig Irmin's swelling keyboards; marvel
at Holger's earth-moving bass line; bow down
to Jaki's mammoth pulse. It's a gradual uplifting,
granted, but, jesus, is it powerful.

Dave Segal (Da ve Segal), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 02:26 (twenty-two years ago)

new order - temptation
sean paul - like glue

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 15:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm sure I'll get tar & feathered for this, but I think the first and...er...only album by The La's is pretty uplifting....despite the fact that Lee Mavers has since become a gurgling recluse and madman.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 15:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Bob Dylan, "I Want You"

(really strange I forgot this bit of Bob-ness earlier on)
