Caitlin O'Neil (kurdtkobain205), Saturday, 30 August 2003 02:19 (twenty-two years ago)

My favorite Bob Dylan album is Desire, Caitlin.

Blood on the Tracks, Blonde on Blonde, Highway 61 Revisited, Time Out of Mind

alright thanks

Caitlin O'Neil (kurdtkobain205), Saturday, 30 August 2003 02:25 (twenty-two years ago)

My first was The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan and it's still my favorite.

Andrew Frye (paul cox), Saturday, 30 August 2003 02:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I agree with Emilymv...but she forgot two...
Blood on the Tracks, Blonde on Blonde, Highway 61 Revisited, Freewheelin Bob Dylan, Another Side of Bob Dylan, Time Out of Mind

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Saturday, 30 August 2003 02:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll go with Blonde on Blonde, Hwy. 61 Revisited, Bringing it All Back Home, Blood on the Tracks, Live 1966

John Bullabaugh (John Bullabaugh), Saturday, 30 August 2003 02:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, Crap!
Blood on the Tracks, Blonde on Blonde, Highway 61 Revisited, Bringing it All Back Home, Bob Dylan (his underrated debut record.), Freewheelin Bob Dylan, Another Side of Bob Dylan, Biograph [Box Set], Time Out of Mind.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Saturday, 30 August 2003 02:54 (twenty-two years ago)

subthread:
What Bobby Dylan albums should you NOT buy:
Infidels,
Down in the Groove

and I know I'm risking being called a heretic...

The Times, They Are a Changin'

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Saturday, 30 August 2003 02:56 (twenty-two years ago)

well, i am going to go on and admit that i am a Street Legal fan. i think it gets trashed unfairly. and i can't believe i forgot Another Side of Bob Dylan, it is amazing.

Emilymv (Emilymv), Saturday, 30 August 2003 03:25 (twenty-two years ago)

new morning

and the basement tapes

animal wrangler (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 30 August 2003 03:29 (twenty-two years ago)

and world gone wrong

animal wrangler (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 30 August 2003 03:29 (twenty-two years ago)

also, one of the best albums for a cold and depressing day when you want to wallow in the muck and mire is _Bob Dylan_, very-gritty-i-eat-chunks-of-coal-to-stay-warm-i-hate-myself-folksy.

Emilymv (Emilymv), Saturday, 30 August 2003 03:29 (twenty-two years ago)

am I the only one on earth who thinks his debut was actually damned amazing?

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Saturday, 30 August 2003 03:33 (twenty-two years ago)

wasn't it Bob Dylan?

Emilymv (Emilymv), Saturday, 30 August 2003 03:36 (twenty-two years ago)

The Basement Tapes
John Wesley Harding
Love and Theft

JesseFox (JesseFox), Saturday, 30 August 2003 03:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Highway 61 Revisited, Highway 61 Revisited, Highway 61 Revisited, a thousand times Highway 61 Revisited.

But The Basement Tapes is a dear, treasured friend as well.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Saturday, 30 August 2003 03:51 (twenty-two years ago)

AAAAGH!

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Saturday, 30 August 2003 04:01 (twenty-two years ago)

choosing between them would be hard, but i guess i listen to the bootleg series more. i think it wins out because of "series of dreams" and "mama, you been on my mind." its less of a greatest hits compilation, which makes it a bit more interesting. although i am probably being totally unfair, i think it has been quite some time since i listened to biograph. maybe i'll do that now.

Emilymv (Emilymv), Saturday, 30 August 2003 04:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Aside from Blood on the Tracks, the Dylan record I've probably played the absolute most is Bob Dylan. Sure, it's folky, but you get his take on "House of the Rising Sun", which is essential, plus some old trad folk/blues, talking blues, "Song to Woody", etc. Plus, it's fun.

David A. (Davant), Saturday, 30 August 2003 05:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I have Ten of Swords (the vinyl box set mentioned above) on tape and, while it's strangely compelling, don't go nuts.

Dock Miles, Saturday, 30 August 2003 06:25 (twenty-two years ago)

listen to jody, caitlin!

amateurist (amateurist), Saturday, 30 August 2003 07:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Listen to your own taste, Caitlin!

David A. (Davant), Saturday, 30 August 2003 07:12 (twenty-two years ago)

'Glass Houses', '52nd St' and 'Nylon Curtain'. 'Turnstiles' has some good stuff too.

dave q, Saturday, 30 August 2003 09:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Caitlin, your first purchase should be "Bringing It All Back Home". Not only is it my favourite, it also showcases his accoustic and electric styles in a sort of two-half albums stylee.

That said, you probably won't be disappointed with any of the albums mentioned here, and will probably end up buying them all eventually anyway.

Nick H, Saturday, 30 August 2003 11:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Blonde On Blonde. Definitely...

C11 (C11), Saturday, 30 August 2003 12:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I delayed buying his debut until fairly recently - I started with Blonde on Blonde and worked backwards and forwards in time, and since I'm not very fond of the earlier folky records (Freewheelin, The Times... etc) I didn't bother with the first album, any more than I have with three quarters of the post-Street-Legal albums. Big mistake. It's one of his best, really intense punk-folk, avoiding the five-minutes-but-feels-like-fifty problems which affect a lot of the songs on the next few albums.

Andrew Norman, Saturday, 30 August 2003 12:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Buy anything he did from 1965 until 1966, anything he did in 1975, plus "Time Out Of Mind". Personally I find "Love And Theft" overrated, but, other than that, I agree with the critical canon regarding Dylan.

Best of all is "Blood On The Tracks".

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Saturday, 30 August 2003 14:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Best of all is "Blood On The Tracks".
For once, we agree.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Saturday, 30 August 2003 21:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Why no love for Nashville Skyline? I know its not the critical achievement of some of the others, but its the one I enjoy listening to the most.

billy g, Sunday, 31 August 2003 04:33 (twenty-two years ago)

me too.

amateurist (amateurist), Sunday, 31 August 2003 05:38 (twenty-two years ago)

here are the ones to buy:

1. Blonde on Blonde
2. The first and last songs from "Highway 61 Revisited"
3. Blood on the Tracks
4. The 2nd half of "Bringing It All Back Home"

Michael Dubsky, Sunday, 31 August 2003 06:38 (twenty-two years ago)

my first was "street legal," which i borrowed from a friend when i was 15. even tho i didn't really LIKE it and i've never listened to it once since i gave it back (6 years ago) i can still remember every song on it. weird, eh?

my favorite dylan album is "john wesley harding," though you can't go terribly wrong with anything he put out from the debut to "nashville skyline."

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Sunday, 31 August 2003 06:53 (twenty-two years ago)

i started with highway 61 and loved it almost straight away, so i think thats a good place to start, but as Justyn said anything from the debut to "nashville skyline" is classic, as is basement tapes, blood on the tracks, desire, and love and theft too

Bob Shaw (Bob Shaw), Sunday, 31 August 2003 07:38 (twenty-two years ago)

There are at least a dozen that you must buy, but your first clutch should be:

-Bringing It All Back Home
-Highway 61 Revisited
-Blonde On Blonde
-Blood On The Tracks
-Biograph

Your second clutch should be:
-Another Side Of Bob Dylan
-Freewheelin' Bob Dylan
-Basement Tapes (the easily-available bootleg complete sessions though, rather than the official release, which contains several band tracks that were nothing to do with the basement sessions)
-John Wesley Harding
-Desire
-Oh Mercy
-Bootleg Series
-Time Out Of Mind

of the numerous live albums:
-Live 1966 is indispensible
-Hard Rain is nicely ragged

your life will not be significantly diminished without the other live albums.

Consider buying 80s material only with extreme caution (with the exception of Oh Mercy) although they all contain the odd good track the general quality level is low.

Officer Pupp, Sunday, 31 August 2003 10:26 (twenty-two years ago)

At the risk of say the same thing as everyone else, I'd say:

Bringing It All Back Home
Highway 61 Revisited
Live 66
Blonde On Blonde
Blood On The Tracks
Time Out of Mind

and Biograph maybe. The thing with Biograph is it's only about 1 CD worth of unique material, but if you aren't planning on getting all the rest of that stuff, it's worth it. But like Nick said, you'll probably end up getting most of his stuff anyway, I certainly didn't buy Blood on the Tracks expecting to buy 20 other Dylan CDs but it happened.

On a side note, it's good to see folks point out how overrated "Love & Theft" is. I figure it got good reviews because people didn't give enough praise to "Time Out of Mind" when it came out.

Brian the Snorf, Sunday, 31 August 2003 11:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Blood On The Tracks, sez I, for the first two tracks alone!

Francis Watlington (Francis Watlington), Sunday, 31 August 2003 14:57 (twenty-two years ago)

First off, Love and Theft as a rebirth is a strong album that frames the neverending tour in its proper light. Time out of Mind, which I suggest, plays a darker note. Love and Theft offers the relief that the show has yet to stop.
I reccommend the zenith of Blonde on Blonde, Freewheelin', Bringing it all Back Home, Times..., Blood on the Tracks, Biograph, Oh Mercy, Biograph, Bootleg.
I could go on - "I have heard them all" - If you can get your hands on a print of the "Fool such as I" LP and you become a die hard that album is perhaps the most unique. Good as I Been to you, World Gone Wrong, Self Portrait - these albums fit well in the fan catalogue because (those of us who own them) are already hooked and are more interested in the diversity of sounds Dylan has employed over his now 40 year carreer.

scott, Sunday, 31 August 2003 19:26 (twenty-two years ago)

what is the "fool such as i" lp? is this a bootleg or are you referring to "Dylan" the out of print "spoiler" album? (which i actually quite like!)

Officer Pupp, Sunday, 31 August 2003 20:43 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah "Dylan" was also released as the "fool such as I LP" I had some struggle finding it as "Dylan" and was more successful in Germany searching for "Fool Such as I"

scott, Tuesday, 2 September 2003 04:01 (twenty-two years ago)

i used to play that album for friends in college and it was delightful to see a look of abject horror pass over their faces.

amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 04:53 (twenty-two years ago)

The second disc of the bootleg box set. Or 'New Morning'.

Andrew L (Andrew L), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 05:31 (twenty-two years ago)

live 1966 is fantastic and if there is anymore stuff that has the same punch as the second disc then I'll happily get it.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 07:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Yay Julio! The 2nd disc is indeed one of the best documents of live rock band power evah!

(also, received the CDRs - many thanks! - and am sending yrs apace!)

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 07:35 (twenty-two years ago)

hope you enjoy the stuff i sent and look forward to hearing your CDRs diamond.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 07:39 (twenty-two years ago)

To start with:
Greatest Hits Vol. 1
Greatest Hits Vol. 2 (aka More Greatest Hits)
(you can always go back and replace these with the individual 1963-69 albums later)
Blood On The Tracks
Desire
Time Out Of Mind
Love And Theft

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 09:02 (twenty-two years ago)

i will prob run afoul of many in making this comment, but i can't see the rabid enthusiasm for dylan's last two lps (time out of mind, love & theft) as anything but wishful thinking. they are good albums (the 2nd one is better IMO; i guess they're better in their way than lucinda williams or steve earle or other roots critics darlings) but no way are they half as good as the better dylan albums of the 60s and 70s. dylan remains a fascinating figure, but the figure to my mind eclipsed the new output a while back.

amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 09:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I never liked Time Out Of Mind AT ALL - a long dry whinge, but Love And Theft is bursting with colour and wit and sadness and grumpiness and everything, since it came out it's been the Dylan record I play most. I think "Po Boy", "High Water", "Sugar Baby" are some of the best things he's done (no 'since' involved), a return to the homely values of New Morning (which I love) but with new added real actual wisdom too. The whole album isn't of that quality so no, it's not as good as Highway 61 Revisited or Blood On The Tracks, but I like it quite as much as I like Blonde On Blonde.

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 09:13 (twenty-two years ago)

What Bobby Dylan albums are good?

None of'em. Hahahahahahahahahahaha.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 14:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 14:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 15:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Apart from yourself, you mean?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 15:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Caitlin and I made up and play nice now,......pity you and I will probably never get to that level.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 15:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 15:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 15:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Have you no humor in your life, Julio?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 15:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I do but not yr sort of 'punk' humour, alex.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 15:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Never once have I added the adjective "punk" to anything of mine, Julio. Stop projecting.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 15:30 (twenty-two years ago)

must be uncouncious.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 15:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm too tired to argue today.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 15:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 15:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 4 September 2003 22:36 (twenty-two years ago)

(Accidentally I also do love many Dylan albums lots, but that has nothing to do with it.
Just wanted to see how it'd look if on the New Answers page there were no items left under Last on Thursday, 14th September 2003... Sorry)

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Friday, 5 September 2003 23:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Live 1966

David. (Cozen), Saturday, 6 September 2003 19:38 (twenty-two years ago)

And John Wesley Harding ("as I went out one morning, to breathe the air around Tom Paine" is my favourite Bob Dylan lyric.)

David. (Cozen), Saturday, 6 September 2003 19:41 (twenty-two years ago)
