Yeah it's been done, but pretty sure the answers change. Plus, I like the threads where everyone can contribute (unless you own less than five records).

1) -being the most recent- "Transmission EP", Low 2) "The Singles", Spacemen 3 3) "Ass Cobra", Turbonegro (damn you, ILM!) 4) "If You Happy With You Need Do Nothing", Alfie 5) "Chelsea Girl", Nico

jamesmichaelward, Tuesday, 14 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Antonio Carlos Jobim - Tide. Eric Dolphy - The Illinois Concert. Duke Ellington (feat. Mahalia Jackson) - Black, Brown and Beige. Beta Band - Hot Shots II. Before that not sure. Aaliyah or Shipping News or Basement Jaxx or June of 44 I think.

Josh, Tuesday, 14 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Few purchases made today so I can't do just the last five, I'm afraid. You should have asked me yesterday.

Geto Boys - "Mind Playin Tricks On Me"
Roots Manuva - "Run Come Save Me" LP
Masterstepz & Celetia feat. MC Ranking - "Sorry (You Lied To Me) Remix"
Jeru Tha Damaja - "Can't Stop The Prophet"
DJ Flare - "Dirt Style (Deluxe Shampoo Edition)" (scratch sounds etc.)< br> So Solid Crew - "21 Seconds" (because I didn't get to a record shop last week)
MOP - "Ante Up (Remix)" (ditto)
Skitz - "Countryman" LP (because I've not seen it on vinyl up till now)
Notorious BIG - "Juicy"/"Unbelievable" (two copies)
London Posse - "How's Life In London?" (reissue)
De La Soul - "Buddy (Extended Version)"/"The Magic Number (1-2-3 Remix)" (disappointing remix of The Magic Number - why didn't they just reissue the originals?)
De La Soul - "Me, Myself And I (Extended Version)"/"Jenifa Taught Me (Extended Version)" (ditto)
Big Punisher - "Yeeeeah Baby" LP
DJ Premier - "Golden Year Vol 2" LP

Am I hardcore or not?

Greg, Tuesday, 14 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Run Come Save Me" - good, but still destined to be the second token (oxmoronic?) UK hip hop record in ILM readers' collections. Actually, having also bought "How's Life In London" I think I've got the royal flush of token UK records today.

Greg, Tuesday, 14 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

What's the first token UK hip hop record then. It's not MC Buzz B by any chance coz I've got that and I'm looking to complete the set.

Billy Dods, Tuesday, 14 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Been kinda slow lately...

1) Beta Band-Hot Shots II 2) Disco Tex & the Sex-o-lettes-Get Dancin' 3) Sugababes-One Touch 4) Super Furry Animals-Rings Around the World 5) Talk Talk-Laughing Stock (thanks to your Ned's Nineties review, Mr. Raggett)

Arthur, Tuesday, 14 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The first - Skitz' "Countryman" I'd guess. Actually the Roots M album is my third UK hip-hop purchase this year (4th if the Big Dada comp counts) - I also bought Aspects.

* Labybug Transistor - Argyle Heir
* The Sixth Great Lake - Up The Country
* Guns 'n' Roses - Use Your Illusion II
* Wolfie - Talk Dark Hill

It's been a bit indie/ twee pop lately.

Mahogany Dream of a Modern Day, Fontanelle s/t, Hungry GhostsAlone, Alone, Kahimi KarieK.K.K.K.K. - all used at Reckless Records in Chicago last week. A few weeks before that, Supersilent 5 new at Neptune Records outside Detroit. CD-Rs kick ass!

Curt, Tuesday, 14 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Everyone loves Reckless. Especially me and Momus.

My list is really, really boring: the Shins' Oh, Inverted World, the Strokes' The Modern Age (yes, yes), Stereolab's Captain Easychord EP, the American Analog Set's Know by Heart, and Pinback's self-titled record.

All that would have been different if my Life Without Buildings import had arrived or I'd been able to find the MC Paul Barman 12" I wanted.

Nitsuh, Tuesday, 14 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I got 4 second-hand C.D.'s last Saturday. Ernest Ranglin "In search of the lost riddim", Gorky's Zygotic Mynci "The blue trees", Groove Armada "All back to mine", Jimi Hendrix "Before the experience". Before that I got "Ghostface Killah's "Supreme clientle" thanks to the ILM tape trading thingie.

Michael Bourke, Tuesday, 14 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

1)Eartha Kitt - Eartha Revisited 2)Felix Da Housecat - Kittenz and thee Glitz. 3)Missy Elliott...Miss E... 4)The Village People - Go West (A whole village people LP for only 99p. Bargain! 5) Elvis' Last Band - Christmas is for the family.

Kepler : Fight Fuck Fail
Super Furry Animals : Mwing
White Stripes : White Blood Cells

bnw, Tuesday, 14 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

My last five, a mix of dirt-cheap used and spankin' new: (1) Echo and the Bunnymen - 'Porcupine' (2) Spacemen 3 - 'Perfect Prescription' and 'Playing With Fire' (3) Tricky - 'Maxinquaye' (4) Comsat Angels - 'Waiting for a Mircale' (5) Oval - '94 Diskont'

And I love 'em all! I'm on a streak lately (knock on wood)...

Clarke B., Tuesday, 14 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

1) Stooges - Fun House. Pretty cool, but not enjoying it as much as I thought I would. 2) Sinead O'Connor - The Gospel Oak EP. I think she's always underrated. A pretty, quiet, melodic record. 3) Speedy J - G Spot. I like to play catch-up w/ techno when I find it used & cheap. Didn't think much of this after one listen. 4) VA - Hypercity/Force Tracks - really, really great stuff. Melodic minimal house. Tim's endorsement caused me to pick this up. 5) To Roccoco Rot & I Sound - Music Is A Hungry Ghost. Strangely dissapointed by this one. Sounds good enough but rather dull. Need to hear it more, though.

Mark, Tuesday, 14 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ice Hockey Hair by SFA, a promo of If You've Never Been by Embrace, I acquired (for free) a copy of This Is It by The Strokes, Rings Around The World by SFA, and also Smiley Smile / Wild Honey on one disc by The Beach Boys.

Nick Southall, Tuesday, 14 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Mark, I've been a hair's breadth from buying 'Funhouse' about four thousand times, but I've just never managed to bring it to the register. It's one of those albums I feel like I really really should own, but I'm not that attracted to it.

Clarke B., Tuesday, 14 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Jeez, I knew my indolence nay poverty wd catch up with me. See out previous thread like this: answer hasn't changed. Dastoor: I quite like Sinister sorta but Missy elliott is bettah

The new Aaliyah. Beta Band -- Hot Shots II. New Jack City soundtrack. Cyndi Lauper -- She's So Unusual. Art Ensable Of Chicago -- The Third Decade.

Sterling Clover, Tuesday, 14 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Blimey I threw a copy of Black The Sun away today because I'd got it free and assumed nobody in the entire world could possibly want it. I must put a list up on the tape trading thread.

Tom, Tuesday, 14 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

John Adams - Nixon in China
Madonna -Erotica,Bedtime Stories and Ray of light
A best of Francois Hardy.

anthony, Tuesday, 14 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hmm. I've been low on funds lately, so my purchases have been weeks apart...

These aren't in chronological order, just what I remember buying the past month or so...

•Tha Liks - X.O. Experience

•Miss E ...So Addictive

•Nas - Illmatic

•Urban Jungle mixed by Aphrodite

•Basement Jaxx - Rooty

Ugh. That took more remembering than I thought. I need to start buying music a bit more often. I don't have to eat -everyday-....

Bobby D. Gray, Tuesday, 14 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

anton webern - complete works

iannis xenakis - electronic music

milton babbitt - philomel

sundar subramanian, Tuesday, 14 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I don't think I've bought any CDs since the last time we did this. But I've copied or downloaded Static Age and Walk Among Us by the Misfits, and The Sign by Ace of Base. I also bought Soul Calibur for Dreamcast, if that counts.

Omar, Wednesday, 15 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

With the caveat that these are purchases, not acquisitions:

Downtown 81--soundtrack to movie, a pretty cool primer of the NYC stuff from that era: Kid Creole, DNA, Tuxedomoon, "Beat Bop"

Saturday Night Fish Fry (Soul Jazz UK)--kinda disappointing sequel to New Orleans Funk, but maybe it'll grow on me

Steve Reid, Nova (Universal Sound UK)--nice solo album of free jazz from Sun Ra percussionist

Disco Kandi 4 (Hed Kandi UK)--Full Intention Presents Shena's "I'll Be Waiting (Gray & Pern Club Mix)," a.k.a. disc one, track eight, is one of my favorite singles of the year

The Harder They Come (Island)--reissue; couldn't get them to send me one, so I just sprang for it, what the fuck. Still one of the greatest records ever made

M. Matos, Wednesday, 15 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Supergrass - Supergrass

John Davey, Wednesday, 15 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Omar, Kittenz and Thee Glitz (despite the best title of all time) is rather disappointing. I much prefer I Know Elektrikboy, his 99 album

gareth, Wednesday, 15 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Being a bit short on funds, I haven't got that much lately: Camera Obscura - First 2 7"s
Birdie - Sidewalk CD single and 7" single
The La's - Lost La's
Beaumont - Discotechque (sp?) EP
Various Sarah 7"s at Discount Prices
American Spring Album
It's been very indie/twee lately, and I'm damn proud of it.

marianna, Wednesday, 15 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

'Generic Flipper' - YES!!! Not only as good as 'Metal Box' and 'Fun House', but as good as 'Modern Lovers' or 'Damaged', or anything else you'd care to name...

dave q, Wednesday, 15 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Last Thursday I bought:

Sulk - Associates
Cupid & Psyche '85 - Scritti Politti
Frequencies - LFO
Radioactivity - Kraftwerk

from the wonder that is HMV's 4 for £20 sale and:

Role Model - Cex
Send Me A Lullabye - The Go-Betweens
Hot Shots II - The Beta Band

from Selectadisc the day before. I do seem to be buying a lot of back catalogue stuff at the moment.

Richard Tunnicliffe, Wednesday, 15 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I also took advantage of that fabby four for twenty quid HMV sale recently, and picked up some good gap-filling stuff - 'Here Come the Warm Jets' by Eno, 'A Handful of Beauty' by Shakti, 'Turn! Turn! Turn!' by The Byrds and the Miles Davis remix alb 'Panthalassa' (Dave Q - there's yr gd Laswell rec, right there!)

Other recent purchases include 'Commers' by Oval, 'Endless Summer' by Fennesz, 'Graduation and Other New Country and Blues Music' by Henry Flynt, 'Thirty-Minute Raven' by David Grubbs, and 'After the Ball' by John Fahey (finally available on mid-price CD - time to ditch my withered old vinyl copy...)

Andrew L, Wednesday, 15 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Notable Acquisitions-
Neu 2
Cannibal Ox - The Cold Vein
Crydamore - V/A compilation, but half of Daft Punk
Hotel Stadt Berlin - V/A
and anything by Hakan Lidbo

K-reg, Wednesday, 15 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

K-Reg (yr back!), how does Hakan Lidbo compare to Luomo?

gareth, Wednesday, 15 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Aha! Someone who bought Fennesz' "Endless Summer"! Is it any good? I usually dread these Brian Wilson-influenced albums (you know High Lamas and that bloody 'Hawaii'). So Andrew do you recommend it?

Omar, Wednesday, 15 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i too have Endless Summer, i'm not sure i'd recommend it, although it is quite good (don't see the Brian Wilsonisms though). Again, i've just written about this on 1471 (sorry)

gareth, Wednesday, 15 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Mitch: Is Vulvaland any good? It's been sitting in the used section for months now and I'm hesitant in getting it. As point of reference, how is it compared to iaora tahiti?

Nitsuh: I've been anticipating the Shins' album since I saw them open for Modest Mouse, but I lost interest in the waiting. Worth seeking again?

Mark: I've had the exact same reaction with Fun House. I mean, I put it and try to jump into it, but it just slowly drifts into decent background music as my attention is drawn towards other activities. I can't seem to really immerse myself into it, as hard as I've tried.

alex in montreal, Wednesday, 15 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

re: Vulvaland. I say get it. IMHO still their best album, so dreamy and not as busy as their later stuff. In comparison with Iaora Tahiti? Just a bit spacier. Mmm, I think I'm going to play it right now :)

Omar, Wednesday, 15 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The Aluminum Group: "Pedals" (lush, frequently lyrically irksome O'Rourke-produced thing on Minty Fresh; four quid in Greenwich R&TEx)

Toru Takemitsu: "Gemeaux" (Denon premiere recording from '94 or so; not yet listened to other material on there ["Dream/Window", "Spirit Garden"], but 4th movement of "Gemeaux" is my new favourite thing; eight quid in Greenwich)

Anja Garbarek: "Smiling and Waving" (Jan's daughter; some nice textures [yeah, I know - Use Other Words, Please], some really duff moments - promo for 50p, Greenwich again)

V/A: Warp 10+3 - Remixes (some terrific stuff on here; b'day present from Mum, but I had to buy it meself 'cos HMV in Liverpool couldn't find a spoonful of jelly in a big bowl of jelly, apparently. 14 squids in Selectadisc for the double-CD, though I really wanted it on vinyl...)

V/A: D'Un Siecle A L'Autre (C20-classical triple-CD box on Montaigne - good for plugging the gaps [don't have "Ionisation" anywhere else, nor any Berio or Mahler]; another pressie a family member couldn't be bothered trying/was unable to find, so their cheque covered it. £17.99 in Selectadisc. Not listened to any of it yet)

Most recent acquisition - an *actual* birthday gift I didn't have to fork out for:

"Doctor Who at the BBC Radiophonic Workshop; Vol 2: 1970-80". Delia, Paddy, all yr favourites. Robin will be pleased.

Michael Jones, Wednesday, 15 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

don't try too hard with fun house. if "1979" doesn't blow you up within the first few listens, it may be a lost cause.

Lotsa people listening to the Art Ensemble of Chicago = cool!!

Omar - don't worry, Fennesz is nothing like the wretched High Llamas - the WIlsonisms are all in the undertow. It's snap, crackle and pop glitch stuff. Would highly recommend the alb, but also urged Gareth to buy it and he's doesn't sound that wowed.

Andrew L, Wednesday, 15 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I thought of starting a thread on Funhouse, but I wanted to listen to it more, & here we are anyway. I like it, but it reminds me so much of the Stones circa Stick Fingers w/ just a bit more "attitude" and drive in the rhythm section. "Can't You hear me Knockin'" in particular seems cut from the same cloth as Funhouse stuff, w/ the heavy riff & the saxaphone. Sure, Iggy is more "menacing" than Mick or whatever, but it just didn't blow me away. I expected it to be heavier somehow. I've heard the Stooges in passing over the years & my memory was of heavier music.

I like Endless Summer very much, you can see what I thought on Pitchfork. That's a top record of the year for me. I just love noise & melody together, and that's just about the perfect blend.

Vulvaland is indeed a great record. It's grown on me a lot since I first heard it. Definitely don't expect anything even close to Niun Niggung or Idiology. Totally different in every way, except that both have interesting sounds. Vulvaland is much more simple, hypnotic, a kind of ambient dub thing with the edges sanded off. Great stuff, and like Omar said, many consider it their best (esp. those who've been into electronic music for a while.) I rank it somewhere in the middle of their output.

Mark, Wednesday, 15 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

This encompasses all of my music purchases in the last three months. Somebody give me money. 1) The Velvet Undergorund
2) Stooges, Raw Power
3) Momus, Circus Maximus
4) Pink Floyd, the Wall
5) Momus, Folktronic

Lyra, Wednesday, 15 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

There's an awful lot of, well, how do I put this, arsing about on those Art Ensemble albums, though. In a good way.

Tom, Wednesday, 15 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You can talk, Ewing. Your list is printed above.

I have bought no records since last time. Oh, yes - I have bought

SCOTT JOPLIN'S PIANO RAGS // BEST OF IRVING BERLIN / BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN, TUNNEL OF LOVE

I would like to be able to think that these things sum me up, but I fear that they don't.

Most interesting things heard recently:

1. "Lincoln Cathedral in a Blizzard", Sister Akai (prev. unavailable)

Alex, concerning "Vulvaland": I'm not sure yet what to make of it. I've owned it for a good few weeks now, but I haven't given it the attention it might deserve. After two concerned listens, I'll say this much: I could do without the repetitive muted house thumps that invade too many songs. A lot of the album seems to meander somewhat aimlessly, if maintaining a consistent warmth and pleasant atmosphere. And there's "Chagrin"- a lovely track of proto-Boards of Canada electro-yearning. I haven't heard "iaora tahiti", so I can't compare. Sorry. This is my first MoM record, I've only heard a couple of MP3s from later works and had an in-store listen to "Idiology". So, I can't really place this, quality-wise, next to any other MoM recordings. I also bought it second-hand, so I haven't felt the need to urgently discover if I've squandered my money, the way I do with more expensive CDs. (Do others think this way, too?)

Kepler? Hmm. Didn't know them from the back of my hand, but played a nice set of mostly-instrumental stop-start loud-soft post-rock (if I remember correctly). And I bought their newest CD, which is on the ever-wonderful and amazing Troubleman Unlimited label. Wha-ho! (Buy the TROUBLEMAN MIX-TAPE compilation! It's choice!)

Last 5 (or so) purchases:

  1. Piano Magic - Popular Mechanics
  2. Suran Song in Stag - Cowboys and Indians
  3. Milemarker - Frigid Forms Sell

Also included are various singles (Shellac, Tara Jane O'Neil, Roads to Space Travel) & two free Astralwerks samplers I snagged @ last evening's Radiohead extravaganza in East Boston.

And, then, there's the shipment I should be receiving from Columbia House in the next couple of weeks... I need a break.

Gareth, to answer your question re Hakan Lidbo in K-Reg's absence... I have Tech Couture which I like a lot although not as much as Vocalcity, to which your lukewarm response still shocks me, to the point that I've been planning on writing a Skykicking entry about my shock.

I think if you're ambivalent about Vocalcity for the reasons you listed on 1471 then Lidbo won't really appeal to you terribly much - he's a 'dryer' producer than Delay in Luomo-guise, and the tracks are more minimal and less tuneful than those on Vocalcity, though a lot shorter. On the other hand, he's also closer to the Chain Reaction/Basic Channel sound and has a slight electro influence, so maybe you could approach it from that angle. I reckon the better option though is to pick up Hypercity (which features Lidbo and nearly everyone else important) and work from there.

But the GRATEST thing about the 1970-80 DW CD is The Sea Devils by Malcolm Clarke, of course (Paddy K is a mere engineer on the stereo versions of the theme, which date from when he was on his way in and Delia on her way out): any thoughts, Mike?

"Lincoln Cathedral in a Blizzard": Reynard, is this a veiled reference to the drowning of mid-80s medieval battle reconstruction as MOR leisure pursuit, or just a thought?

Oh, and the answers:

The Beta Band - Hot Shots II

Luke Haines - Christie Malry's Own Double Entry and The Oliver Twist Manifesto

Roots Manuva - Run Come Save Me

Aspects - Correct English

Nah. Switch the SFA & Mag Fields descriptions, and I BELIEVE you'll be set. Since when was Stephen Merritt a "proglite" afficionado?

David Raposa, Friday, 12 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hey I'm guessing, never heard any Magnetic Fields + generally avoid SFA.
