i just dont really see how they can redeem themsevles ever

chaki (chaki), Sunday, 31 August 2003 00:30 (twenty-two years ago)

i thought it was better than their own song

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Sunday, 31 August 2003 00:53 (twenty-two years ago)

redeem themselves? one must first have had integrity and then compromised that integrity in order to have to redeem oneself. I would not describe a one trick rock group like Metallica as having had any integrity. poser rock stars with an act like that have no integrity. therefore, no reason to be redeemed in the first place. buffoons have no need to be redeemed.

bahtology runs amok, Sunday, 31 August 2003 00:55 (twenty-two years ago)

?? So, did Garage Days Revisited comprise their integrity back in 1987? How's this medley any different really? (Note: I did not see the VMA awards, so I am missing context here, I'll admit)

donut bitch (donut), Sunday, 31 August 2003 01:02 (twenty-two years ago)

it was lenny kravitz into nirvana into white stripes into beat it. it was really sloppy and incoherant. sounded like shit. not exactly budgie and misfits covers.

chaki (chaki), Sunday, 31 August 2003 01:09 (twenty-two years ago)

no, this time they actually played some good music

M Matos (M Matos), Sunday, 31 August 2003 01:11 (twenty-two years ago)

i dunno it was pretty lifeless and forced. painful to sit through really.

chaki (chaki), Sunday, 31 August 2003 01:12 (twenty-two years ago)

It might have been one of those things, and never having seen the Stripes live I can't be difinitive about this, but Seven Nation Army sounds MUCH louder when two people do it than when four people do it.

Does that make sense?

ModJ, Sunday, 31 August 2003 02:41 (twenty-two years ago)

lars' drums just sound real lifeless where meg's sound huge

chaki (chaki), Sunday, 31 August 2003 06:13 (twenty-two years ago)

they sound like popcorn popping

dengo matherton (dubplatestyle), Sunday, 31 August 2003 06:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes! That's it!

ModJ, Sunday, 31 August 2003 14:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Now I want to hear Metallica cover Hot Butter

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Sunday, 31 August 2003 14:54 (twenty-two years ago)

i was really, really hoping they'd play "seven nation army" all the way through. i don't like metallica, and i like the white stripes but think "elephant" is overrated, and it was sounding to me like metallica was about to redeem both themselves and the song in the course of three minutes. if only they'd had the guts, and the time, to go on.

fact checking cuz, Sunday, 31 August 2003 16:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Great name.

ModJ, Sunday, 31 August 2003 16:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd never realized how close the "Beat It" riff is to "Enter Sandman" before, that was kind of cool. putting the White Stripes next to "Smells Like Teen Spirit" in any context is a bad joke, though.

Al (sitcom), Sunday, 31 August 2003 21:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Lars's drums have always sounded like little popguns to me. I've never understood why so many speed metal and hardcore bands seem so content with such lousy drum sounds.

hstencil, Sunday, 31 August 2003 21:27 (twenty-two years ago)

its just a hypothesis, but i think that roudner, deeper drum tones would get lost a little more, so a bit of clickiness is added for definition, especially in the kick drums.

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Sunday, 31 August 2003 22:25 (twenty-two years ago)

i think you're on to something. i read an interview with 1349 (black metal band) recently in which they said their drummer had used a higher, tighter snare to cut through the music during the chaotic, speedy bits.

still, with regards to metallica, it's not like the drums are competing with the bass. if there is any.

your null fame (yournullfame), Monday, 1 September 2003 00:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha I actually laughed out loud when I saw their new bassist (who the hell is that anyway) rocking away whilst not a bass note could be heard. Bahahahaha.

Andrew (enneff), Monday, 1 September 2003 00:29 (twenty-two years ago)

And their medly sounded a lot better than their new track that they played.

Andrew (enneff), Monday, 1 September 2003 00:30 (twenty-two years ago)

'my lifestyle determines my deathstyle.' heavy.

your null fame (yournullfame), Monday, 1 September 2003 04:42 (twenty-two years ago)

their new bass player = robert trujilo from suicidal tendencies/ ozzy's band.

chaki (chaki), Monday, 1 September 2003 06:00 (twenty-two years ago)

jason newsted is in ozzy's band now.

chaki (chaki), Monday, 1 September 2003 06:00 (twenty-two years ago)

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 04:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh Metallica covering James Brown would be good cuzza da dual James Brown-syndrome/James Hetfield-syndrome thing:

James Brown Syndrome:
"Get up-agh! Stay on the scene-agh!"

vs.

James Hetfield Syndrome:
"Exit light-ugh! Enter night-ugh!"

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 04:35 (twenty-two years ago)

your null fame (yournullfame), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 11:02 (twenty-two years ago)

In the pre-show part of the VMAs, Kurt Loder was interviewing Metallica, and he got around to the new bassist. Kurt says, "so, how are they treating you so far?" And the new guy says -- "oh, you know, I'm getting hazed a lot," and Kurt says, "yeah, it's pretty tough to be a bassist in this band!" or something to that effect. The band sort of smiled nervously at him and waited out the tension.

Ben Boyer (Ben Boyer), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 19:13 (twenty-two years ago)
