United Durtro are putting out some live stuff by these long forgotten Krautrockers. So what's the verdict? Do they live up to the hype?

not for me. definitely third-tier krautrock/jazzfusion stuff, from what i've heard. you'd be much better off with the sand _ultrasonic seraphim_ release uniDurtro did a while back, which is brilliant and well worth $30 or whatever.

one year passes...
Xhol (Caravan) is one of the forgotten legends of "free" music (experimental rock, jazz, ambient, "krautrock", whatevr-you-want-to-call-it)!!! EVERYTHING I've heard from them is like a blast of fresh air, uninhibited, playful, powerful... Brilliant and compelling stuff: these guys did it to satisfy their cosmic muses that's for sure because they threw out all convention when they created their music in the late 60's and early 70s'! I highly recommend all their stuff from the "Soul Caravan" days up 'til the last "Xhol" album. It's all on CD and well worth it. I just wish I could find more live stuff and out-takes!

I fully agree with Steve Fitzpatrick. Xhol (Caravan) was one of the most innovative bands of the late 60s and early 70s here in Germany. By the way: the "garden of delights"-label is planning to release 2 unknown live concerts, but it is not yet shure, at what time this will happen.

the "Motherfuckers" record rocks, but all the other stuff I've passively heard is way too horn-heavy for my tastes.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Thursday, 22 May 2003 00:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I agree with Roger. Motherfuckers is the one to get; the weird, fucked-up end of the German scene. The first two records (and most of the recent release on United Dairies) are really just sub-Canterbury rambling. I'd much rather pull out, you know, Hatfield and the North or something. Still, as a big collector of the German scene I welcome Reinhard's news of more archival releases; that Motherfuckers record is peaked enough to keep me interested.

Haven't heard this band but most obscure "Krautrock" bands are obscure because they aren't very good, most of them aren't very "Krautrock" either.

does anyone have an opinion on the "motherfuckers live" 2xlp that's available? is it worth the $25 it costs in the U.S.? from the youtube clips i've seen of them, they seem like a pretty awesome band.

Caravan are OK. But Krautrock????

The Canterbury bands were hardly krautrock. Would rather call it jazz/folk-influenced prog.
