...how on earth do you manage to listen to them all more than once? Or do you?

Patience and time. And lax work rules.

I do have a fair stack of records I've only listened to once, but I certainly plan on listening to them more. I have some CDs I haven't opened yet, but I'll get to those. When I'm in school, I always walk to campus, and I listen to headphones during the walk - that's a good hour of listening a day, at least. I spend a lot of my spare time listening to music, and basically if I'm near my stereo, it's playing something. I live in the boondocks, too, so I get a good hour's worth of listening in my car every day.

If you're worried about budgeting all this, Bill, get a record player! I can't tell you how many awesome records (and some not so awesome ones) I've gotten for chump change. Also, be an avid scourer of used racks and bargain bins. Some stores seriously have no clue, and they give away nuggets for a couple of bucks.

Back in my hey day of record buying I was certainly buying 10-20 a week easily; the end result was that I had (and still have to some extent) a stack of records that I don't know very well, which have only been given a cursory audition. Some of it turned out to be utter rubbish, some of it was okay, and every now and again something leapt out of that 10 records which I have since been unable to live without. I'm not a very good listener; unless I'm forced to review something, I tend to stick with what I know and love and veerrrrrrrrry slowly the new stuff creeps into the regular rotation. There are records I've owned for over a year which I couldn't identify in a blind listening with a gun to my head.

I don't buy ten records a week, but that many easily cross my desk and then some. I have a CD player in my computer at work, tho, so I just listen to music for most of the day. But sometimes I get sick of having too much control over my music and just listen to internet radio.

Lax work does rule. Also a lot of public transit and walking. Even if I do get to listen to all my records, I admit that some have not been well absorbed.

I don't like buying more than 2 or 3 CDs or albums at any one time because I know I won't be able to give them quality time and attention. If they don't impress me right away they tend to go into the resale pile. I have a CD player on my desk at work and in my car, use a walkman at the gym but very rarely walk down the street with headphones on.

i try to keep my headphones fastened to my head for at least 6 out of the 7 hours i'm working; then when i get home i usually listen to music for 2 or 3 hours in the evening, with breaks for reruns of the simpsons.

personally i've been trying to slow down my record buying, just due to the fact that i do have a stack of CDs i've only listened to one or two times - but lately i've been developing better habits about listening to things, trying not to get too obsessive over albums so i don't burn out on them and exclude other things that might be just as appealing but take longer to get into. don't want to let the new missy elliott overshadow avey tare, panda bear & geologist or bladder flask, after all.

Whenever I have more than one new record, I listen to one obsessively and wait weeks until I'm interested in hearing the other one. (I'm still waiting to be interested in the Olivia Tremor Control.)

You might have to wait a very long time.

DJ Martian - come out wherever you are.

Yeah at work some 3 CD's. Not too much, otherwise you'll be branded the anti-social to which I already gravitate without the headphones. On the bike to work/home. At home before the little one goes to bed.

Although today I was actually glad the CD shops I visited didn't have Fennesz's 'Endless Summer'. Gives me some time to digest the recent Roots Manuva, Aaliyah purchases. Of course on the way out I ran into a whole rack of Sun Ra CD rereleases but even managed to escape without a purchase there. Just could not make a choice without some research (I mean should I go for When Angels Speak of Love, Nothing Is or Lanquidity? ;)

Yeah, I agree. I wish I didn't have to listen to music all day - believe me, I'm so bombarded with it that having a few hours without music is nice. Unfortunately, I have an extremely noisy co- worker who cannot do anything silently, and headphones are the only thing that make it bearable. I do take them off when the office is quiet.
