The new Spiritualised LP sounds like a classic after 3 listens. Is it?

Best assessment, positive or negative, about it, from my friend EJL after hearing an initial mix -- "It sounds like bad Luna."

Ultimately, I think it's slightly overcooked. But as an endless surge up and out, but it's pretty impressive. I think Jason's now cut ties with most of reality, though.

i've only heard the first single but it sounded like someone who had run out of ideas but certainly had no similar shortage of funds.

I didn't make it through one listen. Not even close. Once the choir and the organs or whatever started working up to their second crescendo, I switched on the TV to look for some good reruns. Spiritualized should be on Dreamworks.

Starts out pretty good, goes through dreadful mid-phase (Straight and the Narrow is the worst thing they've ever done) after which things pick up a bit with You Wont go to Heaven. Easily the worst Spiritualized album. Most of the lyrics are pretty embarrassing this time around. Now the new Mercury Rev, that's a whole different story :)

Judging by "The Dark Is Rising" the new M Rev really SHOULD be on Dreamworks.

If it's the worst thing they've ever done, what's the second worst? (Got to triangulate here...)

2nd worst? Not counting the live album (which I haven't heard): Pure Phase, but there's a big gap between that one and the new one. Lazer Guided Melodies being the best IMHO.

I think the new Spiritualized LP is the best they've done, and by a long way the best too. Jason's actually written some songs and revealed a sense of humour. All power to him.

I dunno maybe that's it: proper songs. Too bad most of The Song songs on it have godawful lyrics, sort of "Roses are red/Violets are blue..." level. Still "12 Steps" is ace.

i think the lyrics have always been crap, he dabbles in rock cliche only most of the time. but usually he can deliver them soulfully enough to have their banality overlooked.

i thought the first three records represented a steady trend upward in quality.

mercury rev made a wonderful first album, a miserable second, a great third and a dull fourth.
