though Matchbox 20 is still doing well. Somehow.

Blur

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Monday, 1 September 2003 19:11 (twenty-one years ago)

There was a very mournful and desperate-sounding Ocean Colour Scene new entry in the chart this week at about #35.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 1 September 2003 19:12 (twenty-one years ago)

also 311 is doing surprisingly well, with a single in the modern rock top 10. maybe the other bands flew higher and therefore had farther to fall, while 311 just kept dishing out the same pile of shit to the same group of stoned plodclompers.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 1 September 2003 19:13 (twenty-one years ago)

The Bluetones

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Monday, 1 September 2003 19:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm beginning to think in retrospect that that group of bands Anthony identifies was the American equivalent of Britpop, only without a grouped name and specifically directed media movement.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 1 September 2003 19:42 (twenty-one years ago)

They were the nice guys that were successful during the Lilith Fair before Korn led to the resurgence of a more metal aesthetic. The bands basically went so far pop (except 311) they couldn't maintain any form of badassness. Matchbox 20 has survived cuz they were never badass in the first place.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 1 September 2003 19:46 (twenty-one years ago)

If Gen X was bigger than Gen Y these guys would still be having hits, but it wasn't.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 1 September 2003 19:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Yankpop?

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 1 September 2003 19:47 (twenty-one years ago)

haha the only Lilith Fair ladies who are active this year, Jewel and Liz Phair, are making their FANS wish it was still 1997.

Oh fuck! I forgot the Wallflowers put out an album this year too.

Not Yankpop cuz being American was never a big deal. It's much more of a nice guy thing.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 1 September 2003 19:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Alternapop.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 1 September 2003 19:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Also not Yankpop cuz Blur circa Blur qualifies too. Woo-hoo!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 1 September 2003 19:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Not Yankpop cuz being American was never a big deal.

Can't really be Alternapop because being 'alternative' wasn't a big deal, either! :)

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 1 September 2003 19:50 (twenty-one years ago)

that's why it's alternapop. The contradiction is why they're not successful now. They appealed to the aging remnants of the grunge movement, but were clearly much more comfortable with commercialism and pop sounds. They started on alternative radio but moved to pop. When pop closed the door on them for getting to old, alternative wouldn't take them back because it had moved on to nu-metal. So they're fucked.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 1 September 2003 19:52 (twenty-one years ago)

also these groups were all genuinely bands, not prefabricated acts. they still held some rockist values.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 1 September 2003 19:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I really wish I'd thought of this back when these albums came out. I might have been able to got a "Death of Alternapop" article for the voice out of it. Dagnabbit.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 1 September 2003 19:57 (twenty-one years ago)

jed_e_3 (jed_e_3), Monday, 1 September 2003 19:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Friendspop works for Matchbox 20 and artists who were actually on the Friendsoundtrack, but stuff like Smashmouth and Blur were a bit more hardcore. Sublime and the whole ska-pop deal was part of it, and ska-pop isn't friendspop.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 1 September 2003 20:00 (twenty-one years ago)

It was basically new wave to grunge's punk.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 1 September 2003 20:02 (twenty-one years ago)

deux wave

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 1 September 2003 20:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Cozen (Cozen), Monday, 1 September 2003 20:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Those American rock bands are too boring. Not enough fighting and insulting, not enough personality. Jeez, even Starsailor and Ash got into it, fer feck's sake.

The only thing I can recollect off the top of my head was that Third Eye Blind twat calling Rob Thomas of MB20 "fat". Which always made me dislike MB20 less than 3EB.

ham on rye (ham on rye), Monday, 1 September 2003 20:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Your post reaffirms that you Brits hear with the NME, not your damn ears.

Actually that's not fair, it's your charts that really reaffirm it.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 1 September 2003 21:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I know that's kinda harsh but no Starsailor fan is gonna fuck with Sugar Ray on my watch.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 1 September 2003 21:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, but a Starsailor fan couldn't even fuck with Dan Hill.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 1 September 2003 21:28 (twenty-one years ago)

"When pop closed the door on them for getting to old,
alternative wouldn't take them back because it had moved on to nu-metal."

Anthony, are they not getting airplay now on clear-channel owned pop stations because they're "too old" or do their new cds just not contain as many "pop" hits as their old ones(are they one-hit wonders)??? I'm just asking as I haven't heard the new ones and it's hard to guage why some songs make it on American hit radio and not others. I see that powerpoppers Rooney and Fountains of Wayne are on MTV2 and VH1 (and occasionally MTV) but I don't think they're on commercial rock or pop radio, are they?

Timbaland/Missy

They don't do too bad commercially, do they?

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 1 September 2003 21:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Timba is definitely not the hottest producer on the block anymore...

Siegbran (eofor), Monday, 1 September 2003 22:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Can we use this thread to make fun of 311 a little more?

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 1 September 2003 22:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd sooner eat glass than be subjected to Starsailor's music again. Sugar Ray, they have one good song that they've parlayed into a number of slightly lesser hits. At least they aren't covers =|

ham on rye (ham on rye), Monday, 1 September 2003 22:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I hate the fucking NME.

ham on rye (ham on rye), Monday, 1 September 2003 22:26 (twenty-one years ago)

me to thread. Clear Channel is a red herring, everyone follows the charts and call-out research. These bands still do fine in their demographic (women 25-34) it's just that they aren't crossing over to the teen market/top 40 radio like they did a few years back. Here is the current Hot AC chart.

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 01:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Oops, wait, I sort of missed that whole "put out albums this year" detail. But in some parallel universe, Always Outmoded, Never Begunned actually was released sometime this year. And it was pants.

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 02:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Can we use this thread to make fun of 311 a little more?

Their new album is called *snicker* _Evolver_.

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 04:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Steve, Smashmouth's and Sugar Ray's self-titled albums from 2000 contained numerous potential pop hits on them soundwise. However, both bands suffered from major overexposure (Smashmouth were Shrek's best friends, both bands appeared in numerous ads and, oddly, were seen in multiple movies). Fountains Of Wayne never achieved a similar media saturation and their new hit has lots of novelty appeal to young people. I'll be surprised if a follow-up single does just as well. Rooney, like Phantom Planet, is pure Coppola-driven hype. The lack of hype and novelty is a bigger reason for their stalled sales than any quality dropoff.

Geirbot is still wishing it was 1997 and he could still be on AMA.

RETARTED ELF

This concept has not been properly explored.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 21:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes it has. I've been a retarded elf all my life. It's really not as interesting as it sounds.

I personally wish it were '97 because I'd be younger. Are there bands that DON'T want to be younger?
