Rock and Roll lying: Classic or Dud?

Last night there was a program on Channel 4 about Primal Scream. Great program and everything, but on it Bobby Gillespie claimed that his first band consisted of Andrew Innes scrubbing a guitar and himself playing drums on the "sleeve" of PIL's "Metal Box".

I would say this is almost undoubtedly an enormous fib.

What do you reckon? I reckon it's classic.

I dunno, knowing Bobby anything is possible. Within his framework, at least (then again I am listening to the new Live in Japan thing right this second...)

It makes me wonder if the entire Primal Scream "phenomenon" would have happened if he'd got it on CD.

How about the KLF claiming to have burned a million pounds in cash? If that wasn't a classic fib, I'll bet they're hurting about it now.

it's all lies innit? the tales of destitution, the amusing anecdotes of early authenticity, the painful weight of being so sensitive. i'd say it's classic at first, dud when you're crushed by total disallusionment, but perhaps classic again in the end. (or maybe that's just me being an obsessive fangirl.)

gillespie is probably embarrassed that the first PS recording was so twee he had to burn the master tapes

"I'm bisexual. Always have been."

In early JAMC press, Bobby was usually described as being 18 & the others between 19 & 21. I think they were all about 5 yrs older than this - it was probably McGee's lie, not theirs

Apparently they're even older than Geri Halliwell

I mean, what I'm saying is if you care that much whether the drummer is the wife or the sister or whatever, then you deserve to be duped.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 15:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I hate it. I was personally offended by The Dwarves claim that someone in their band was stabbed.

I also hate that bands would lie about the family. Being husband and wife makes people family anyway, so why did they have to say brother and sister? Husband and wife is actually the same thing.

Guess what I was lying! Or was I?

And then there was the bit about living on nothing but beer and potato chips.

Bob Zimmerman ran away from home, apparently
