There's a tiny break in "Kings & Queens" by Killing Joke (from the Night Time album) where the band stops on a dime, and drummer Big Paul Ferguson lets loose a cathartic "Urrgghhhh" before everything kicks back in and Geordie bludgeons you with the riff. Most satisfying.

"WAR ... HUUNNNHHHHH!!!"

good god y'all, the only possible answer to this is edwin starr.

Bobby Bland's bizarre throaty grunt / croak is my favourite, nobody does it like him (actually that's a lie, Geater Davis does it just like him but that's another matter).

I recently heard a trivvic record by C-Mone in which she manages to grunt in a Nottingham accent. I was very impressed.

I really like Ja Rule's grunts leading up to his verse in Jay-Z's "Can I Get A...", especially in the video where it cuts to people dancing then him grunting and sneering then people dancing then him grunting and sneering, etc. In fact, I like these grunts better than anything else he's ever done.

Tom Breihan (Tom Breihan), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 14:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Tom G. Warrior, first track on the "Tragic Serenades" EP (I think it's called "Jewelled Throne")

Faith No More's cover of "Easy", Mike Patton right before the guitar solo.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 14:51 (twenty-one years ago)

That never struck as a grunt so much as a declaration of disgust.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 14:56 (twenty-one years ago)

It always sounded to me like a very pained orgasm.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 15:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Helge Schneider, "We Gotta Rock, We Gotta Roll". Before the title bit is sung, but after the "Ve gunnah FUCK-ah tonight" bit.

Haikunym (Haikunym), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 19:19 (twenty-one years ago)

How about Morten Harket's UhhHUHHs on the first few AHA hits?

"He likes a bit of reading on the subway home..

oohooohhhooo UhhHUHHs!"

Always made me laugh, anyway.

Marcel Gallingez (Marcel Gallingez), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 19:44 (twenty-one years ago)

at the beginning of !!!'s single, really lacklustre grunts too preoccupied with laid back cool. yep, i'd have to go with the ba-ha men, who indeed did let the dogs out? or do they count as barks rather than grunts?

chicken tonight (chicken tonight), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 22:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Check out the one on Dave Gahan's newest solo album I forget the track but it's at the onset of it, and boy is it a doozie!

A Nairn (moretap), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 23:21 (twenty-one years ago)

also search: Gerogerigegege for plenty of grunts.

Boredoms.

but the best ever recorded pained squeal is Accept's "Son of a Bitch" - there's a part in the middle that needs to be heard to be believed

roger adultery (roger adultery), Wednesday, 3 September 2003 01:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Syl Johnson - "Different Strokes" (see about a billion "golden era" rap records)

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Wednesday, 3 September 2003 02:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know is it's the best, but Andrew WK's grunt at the end of "Party Hard" is pretty cool. Especially in the video.

Brandon Mitchell (A.H.), Friday, 5 September 2003 04:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm picking hairs cos he uses actual words, but that "GOOOHD LAWWWWWWDDDDD" from bloody "Crunchy Granola": by Neil Diamond is pretty damn funny (any Australian out there who ever saw Tony Martin talking about this on the Late Show should be laughing now...)

Also you can't go past the "sounds like he's having a puke" "UNNNNNGH" sound at the start of "TV Party" by Black Flag - classic!

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 5 September 2003 04:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Carl Puttnam's wwwwows take some beating, in Cud's Living in the Past.

Jez (Jez), Friday, 5 September 2003 06:06 (twenty-one years ago)

The cantonese bands The dragons cover of the Anarchy in the Uk has a great grunt in the end of the song.

Also Flying lizards version of Sex machine have some good grunts!

Jens (brighter), Friday, 5 September 2003 07:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Iggy in Loose!

Ommmm, Friday, 5 September 2003 13:43 (twenty-one years ago)

People I know always talk about Iggy's "burp" at the beginning of "Raw Power," but it has always sounded like a grunt to me, and a very nice one. Unimpressed, like.

Bonzo Dog Band's "The Strain"?
