been down for me all day

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 4 September 2003 22:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not on a PC, but I saw this posted on another forum the other day, perhaps it can help you?

If you can't get it to work, search your hard drive for a file named 'hosts', open in notepad and add:

38.115.131.131 sk2.slsk.org

38.115.131.131 www.slsk.org

38.115.131.131 mail.slsk.org

38.115.131.131 server.slsk.org

to the bottom of the file and save. The domain has been buggered up by forces unknown and it is really tricky to log on. You should now be able to use it.

download the fix at the website given above.some kind of domain problem

evan chronister (evan chronister), Friday, 5 September 2003 01:41 (twenty-one years ago)

The soulseek guy (dammit can't remember his name) forgot to reregister his domain name. Thats all. The machines are up and running, but when you look for slsk.org you get no IP. At least that's what I've heard. Luckily I have the IP cached so I'm still using it. It's actually kind of nice right now because the hardcore folks are up and running because of their geekiness/soulseek addiction so I can still find the odd stuff that I'm looking for, but the traffic is back to what it was before soulseek "got big" and the server(s) couldn't scale as well.

But yeah, download the fix (which just connects to the IP rather than doing the DNS lookup) or do the hosts file trick (edit /etc/hosts on *nix or whatever it is on Windows or whatever platform you're running) and it should work fine.

Mike Salmo (salmo), Friday, 5 September 2003 03:44 (twenty-one years ago)

thanks, have altered /etc/hosts accordingly and everything is working great.

Soulseek guy is called nir.

thanks for dog latin for putting this q. I have not been downloading for the last couple of days and thought the server was down again. will try 'stuff'.

how do i get to the ilm room? kind of new to slsk, but have really been digging it...

marcg (marcg), Friday, 5 September 2003 13:45 (twenty-one years ago)

On the bottom right there's a list of rooms, just sort by name, then find & doubleclick on the ILM one.

To automatically join the room when starting up slsk, rightclick in the ILM room, "toggle autojoin".

When you install it, just do everything it sez, and when it asks to use your C:\Program Files\Soulseek directory, what it's really telling you to do is to send money to my address.

slsk.blogspot.com

Siegbran (eofor), Saturday, 6 September 2003 11:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Phil-two - Acquisition and iSwipe are the best I've found for OS X. No, they don't have as much as slsk. There's some weirdass way to run slsk on OS X that Ed details here, but I don't trust myself not to bugger up my machine.

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 6 September 2003 12:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I managed to get slsk running on OSX yesterday without too many difficulties. I believe this solution requires version 10.2.
This is what worked for me:

1. Download MacPython 2.3 (link 5.8MB) and install the .pkg file

2. Download wxPythonOSX-2.4.1.2-py2.3.dmg (link 11.5MB) and install the .pkg files

3. In Finder, locate and open the MacPython-2.3 folder. Load PythonLauncher and uncheck "Run in a Terminal Window" from PythonLauncher's Preferences window.

4. Download and unstuff PySoulseek 1.2.4 (link 95k).

5. In Finder, locate and open the pyslsk-1.2.4 folder. Rename the file pyslsk to pyslsk.py (you get a prompt to confirm adding the extension; click Add).

6. Control-click on pyslsk.py and select Get Info from the popup menu. Click the triangle next to "Open with" and set the popup to PythonLauncher.

7. Doubleclick pyslsk.py to launch slsk.

8. In menu File ->Settings, change the server from mail.slsk.org:2240 to 38.115.131.131:2240 to work around the IP problem explained upthread. Also set login name, download directory, personal info etc.

9. Select menu File->Connect

It worked for me.

Jeremy (Jeremy), Saturday, 6 September 2003 14:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks for that - it looks somewhat less daunting.

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 6 September 2003 14:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I wish I had broadband. I can't download all of that. If you're going ahead with that, N., let us know how it goes.

Cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 6 September 2003 14:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Why not download it with iGetter while you are sleeping?

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 6 September 2003 14:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Because I don't know what iGetter is.

Cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 6 September 2003 14:35 (twenty-one years ago)

It's a shareware program that manages downloads much more robustly than browsers do. You set it to pause and resume downloads, and even automatically reconnect to the net if your connection drops off.

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 6 September 2003 19:29 (twenty-one years ago)

N. and Jeremy - Unless there have been pretty major improvements in wxPython, pyslsk crashes pretty regularly using that program. The method Ed mentions (also, in more/better detail here:
http://slskboard.savagenews.com/index.php?showtopic=5830 ) is pretty much fool/bullet-proof. It is an involved process, and takes a while (though you actually have to do very little, the installation process can take your computer a couple of hours altogether), but you can't really screw up your system in the process. The reason for this is that you are not doing anything to your OS X system. Rather, the download and installation program, fink, creates it's own separate file hierarchy. If you do somehow manage to screw anything up, only other fink-installed files will be affected. And if you decide that you want to get rid of pyslsk or anything else you've installed with fink, you can just delete the sw directory. soulseek aside,I'd recommend playing with fink a bit just to get a basic familiarity of some of what's going on behind the scenes in OS X... but I'm geeky like that

flightsatdusk (flightsatdusk), Saturday, 6 September 2003 19:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks.

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 6 September 2003 19:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I think you should do it, N. The Ed way. Set an example I can follow.

David. (Cozen), Saturday, 6 September 2003 19:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I wonder if it's worth it without broadband anyway (I have a feeling the developer tools updates are going to be some enormous 80GB file or something). But maybe I will.

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 6 September 2003 19:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Err - my exaggeration was supposed to only run to 80MB.

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 6 September 2003 19:58 (twenty-one years ago)

If you include X11 and fink, 80MB might not be an exaggeration... Didn't realize you were on a dial-up. Might not be worth it, then...

flightsatdusk (flightsatdusk), Saturday, 6 September 2003 20:21 (twenty-one years ago)

flightsatdusk, the method I used quits on me occasionally when I run multiple searches, but is otherwise quite usable and stable. I didn't go the Fink/X11 route because I'm also on dialup, and there was just too much to download.

Anyway, the option is there if anyone wants to try it. About an hour and a half of downloads on a 56k connection.

Jeremy (Jeremy), Sunday, 7 September 2003 11:33 (twenty-one years ago)

The guy at http://www.sensi.org/~ak/pyslsk/ says he's stopping developing pyslsk and directs people to what he regards as its successor, Nicotine. Anyone tried that?

N. (nickdastoor), Sunday, 7 September 2003 11:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorry she, not he.

N. (nickdastoor), Sunday, 7 September 2003 12:21 (twenty-one years ago)

No, I was right the first time.

N. (nickdastoor), Sunday, 7 September 2003 12:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I've got both Nicotine and pyslsk. They both seem to be more or less identical on the fink/x11 at this point, but given that Nicotine is still being developed and pyslsk isn't, this might change. Nicotine may run better on the setup Jeremy is using, I don't know (I imagine it would work at least as well, if not better, than pyslsk). As a bit of an aside, I think that both pyslsk and Nicotine are better than the Windows slsk client, and Nir would do well to incorporate some of their features...

flightsatdusk (flightsatdusk), Sunday, 7 September 2003 16:33 (twenty-one years ago)

so i downloaded nictotine and open the install information and get this:

Linux/Unix installation instructions follow.

To install Nicotine, from the source tree run:

python setup.py install --prefix=

If you omit --prefix Nicotine will be installed into the python system
directory (typically /usr)

This is not recommended however, as there is no way to uninstall things
easily this way.

The recommended way of running Nicotine is from the source tree, which might
seem strange, but is no problem at all, especially if you are the only user of
the system that is interested in running Nicotine. From the source tree run:

python ./nicotine

Another option would be that you create an RPM from the source tree:

python setup.py bdist_rpm

which will create a binary RPM in the dist subdirectory of the source tree.

Note: to build source distribution (.tar.bz2) from itself, run:

python setup.py sdist --formats=bztar

does one have to be a linux geek to run the prog?

dog latin (dog latin), Sunday, 7 September 2003 20:33 (twenty-one years ago)

not necessarilly. fink is the key. download fink, then use fink to install nicotine.
(in your terminal, type "fink install nicotine") more in-depth instructions here:

http://slskboard.savagenews.com/index.php?showtopic=8173

actually, i think the text you're quoting is from the red hat installation instructions. and yes, you do need to be a linux geek to do that. but why would you be messing around with red hat if you weren't a linux geek?

I finally got fink installed on my Mac, and everything works, but half the time it won't let me browse another user's files or get their info. It works on some people, but not on others.

Is that just a fink glitch?

Re finding that people can't browse your files, I found this recently and meant to post it here:

http://testic.demon.co.uk/slsktest/

Very useful for testing whether your port 2234 is open.

Also

http://testic.demon.co.uk/slsk-howto/

has some instructions on how to configure certain routers.

But if you're behind a firewall you don't control, I guess there's not much you can do.

eight months pass...
Mine has suddenly given up the ghost - it started off by hanging at the 'scanning shared folders' point and now appears not to connect at all. Uninstalling and reinstalling doesn't work, and now I've lost my lovely user list as well :(

Anyone else experiencing problems?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Saturday, 27 November 2004 16:09 (twenty years ago)

it started off by hanging at the 'scanning shared folders' point

I find that when I add a whole load of new mp3s to my shared folder, the next time I restart soulseek it might take five to ten minutes to rescan everything and, quaintly, it doesn't show you that it's doing anything while it's doing it, not even the little bar at the bottom.

two years pass...

so... without bothering to tell anyone or post about it on their website, apparently we're all supposed to switch to the "New Server" version?

GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Monday, 7 July 2008 04:18 (sixteen years ago)

you have to switch to the new version, but after you upgrade restart your pc, and the old version should also work side by side with the new one

Zeno, Monday, 7 July 2008 04:21 (sixteen years ago)

okay, it does and that makes even less sense. split your users between two servers that don't communicate.

GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Monday, 7 July 2008 04:56 (sixteen years ago)

they want everyone to switch to the new version but till everyone will, they keep both servers up, cause the new one has less users, still.
after most people will switch theyll probably cancel the old version.
that make sense to me.
