If you can't get it to work, search your hard drive for a file named 'hosts', open in notepad and add:
38.115.131.131 sk2.slsk.org38.115.131.131 www.slsk.org38.115.131.131 mail.slsk.org38.115.131.131 server.slsk.org
to the bottom of the file and save. The domain has been buggered up by forces unknown and it is really tricky to log on. You should now be able to use it.

But yeah, download the fix (which just connects to the IP rather than doing the DNS lookup) or do the hosts file trick (edit /etc/hosts on *nix or whatever it is on Windows or whatever platform you're running) and it should work fine.

1. Download MacPython 2.3 (link 5.8MB) and install the .pkg file
2. Download wxPythonOSX-2.4.1.2-py2.3.dmg (link 11.5MB) and install the .pkg files
3. In Finder, locate and open the MacPython-2.3 folder. Load PythonLauncher and uncheck "Run in a Terminal Window" from PythonLauncher's Preferences window.
4. Download and unstuff PySoulseek 1.2.4 (link 95k).
5. In Finder, locate and open the pyslsk-1.2.4 folder. Rename the file pyslsk to pyslsk.py (you get a prompt to confirm adding the extension; click Add).
6. Control-click on pyslsk.py and select Get Info from the popup menu. Click the triangle next to "Open with" and set the popup to PythonLauncher.
7. Doubleclick pyslsk.py to launch slsk.
8. In menu File ->Settings, change the server from mail.slsk.org:2240 to 38.115.131.131:2240 to work around the IP problem explained upthread. Also set login name, download directory, personal info etc.
9. Select menu File->Connect
It worked for me.

Linux/Unix installation instructions follow.
To install Nicotine, from the source tree run:
python setup.py install --prefix=
If you omit --prefix Nicotine will be installed into the python systemdirectory (typically /usr)
This is not recommended however, as there is no way to uninstall thingseasily this way.
The recommended way of running Nicotine is from the source tree, which mightseem strange, but is no problem at all, especially if you are the only user ofthe system that is interested in running Nicotine. From the source tree run:
python ./nicotine
Another option would be that you create an RPM from the source tree:
python setup.py bdist_rpm
which will create a binary RPM in the dist subdirectory of the source tree.
Note: to build source distribution (.tar.bz2) from itself, run:
python setup.py sdist --formats=bztar
does one have to be a linux geek to run the prog?

actually, i think the text you're quoting is from the red hat installation instructions. and yes, you do need to be a linux geek to do that. but why would you be messing around with red hat if you weren't a linux geek?

Very useful for testing whether your port 2234 is open.
Also

has some instructions on how to configure certain routers.
But if you're behind a firewall you don't control, I guess there's not much you can do.

I find that when I add a whole load of new mp3s to my shared folder, the next time I restart soulseek it might take five to ten minutes to rescan everything and, quaintly, it doesn't show you that it's doing anything while it's doing it, not even the little bar at the bottom.

so... without bothering to tell anyone or post about it on their website, apparently we're all supposed to switch to the "New Server" version?
― GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Monday, 7 July 2008 04:18 (sixteen years ago)
you have to switch to the new version, but after you upgrade restart your pc, and the old version should also work side by side with the new one
― Zeno, Monday, 7 July 2008 04:21 (sixteen years ago)
okay, it does and that makes even less sense. split your users between two servers that don't communicate.
― GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Monday, 7 July 2008 04:56 (sixteen years ago)
they want everyone to switch to the new version but till everyone will, they keep both servers up, cause the new one has less users, still. after most people will switch theyll probably cancel the old version. that make sense to me.
