I'm seeing Múm on Sunday (even went to the effor of figuring out the ú) and the Black Keys in a few weeks. And am tempted by the TCB band featuring none other than the King's 70s backing band, Ront Tutt, James Burton, Jerry Scheff and H Glen D Hardin (with DJ Spooky on turntables).

your null fame (yournullfame), Friday, 5 September 2003 20:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Mimeo performed in the serpentine gallery yesterday (not in the actual gallery but in the pavillon outside): The musicians and their gear were around the room and you could go in and out, and so could one or two of the players (Mimeo are a group of 10 improvisers). The great thing abt moving around is that Mimeo do produce such a rich variety of sound that you will hear emphasis on diff parts at diff places in the room. I got to sit in the middle first and my left year ear was pummeled with sound, with my right side eventually joining in after 10-15 mins. I stayed in that one place for abt 45 mins and you could isolate little repeating motifs here, another one there: but taken in with everything else the 'tapestry of sound' cliche applies and it was exciting, it felf great to listen to this unstructured piece in that room (like I was one of the ppl listening to the premiere of persepolis).

One thing abt experimental music live is that its really great to look at but not here. The whole thing was full and it was better looking at ppl watching mimeo and their reactions to it (especially the girls, and there were many of them, which is a novelty in improvised music ;-)) but Mimeo itself, and what they do to get the sound isn't v interesting to look at, what with pushing buttons and clicking mouses and only Keith rowe, on his tabletop guitar, held my attn visually.

I only really got into it for a 20 minute period. I dipped in and out, started moving and the whole thing was abt 3 hrs. There was only two periods where all 10 were playing but there was always music from 3-4 of them at all times though the music was at its best when all 10 of them were there. A magical evening.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 6 September 2003 08:34 (twenty-one years ago)

An ILXOR turned up and we got talking abt how it wasn't yr usual improv gig: you know, only 10 ppl there, head buried in hand, trying to listen. ppl talked !!!(yes mark they were talking), ppl moved around. We agreed that we NEED more of this.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 6 September 2003 08:43 (twenty-one years ago)

hello!

Chip Morningstar (bob), Saturday, 6 September 2003 09:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Be there.

Lynskey (Lynskey), Saturday, 6 September 2003 12:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I was at MIMEO too - it was too long and a bit messy (only to be expected) but built in intensity nicely. One thing I must say is that I've never understood why people quite deliberately stand in front of people who are sitting down in a seated area - don't these people have any manners? And why are they always Spanish or Italian?!?!??

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 12:26 (twenty-one years ago)

we keep going to the same gigs: are you gonna see alan wilkinson abuse a saxophone tomorrow?

dada- it wasn't a proper gig space. the point is to move around a bit and you weren't expected to sit there for three hours.

The 'Spanish or italian' comment isn't funny 9or wasit just meant to be an observation?).

gygax, come to nyc for the october show!!

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 21:31 (twenty-one years ago)

This is in early October as well but Calexico is playing two nights at Lee's Palace in Toronto. Friday, Oct. 3 and Saturday, Oct. 4.
I think I'm going to go to the Saturday show.

Bruce Urquhart (Bruce Urquhart), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 21:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I went to see exactly the kind of show Julio was describing, on Saturday. Taku Unami and Mark Wastell rocking out at Sound 323. Textures! Randomness! Whooshing! Silence! Now that's what we want.

Daniel (dancity), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 21:38 (twenty-one years ago)

lauren, that is a thought to consider... although i might be out there for the world series!!! that would make a very tasty icing on the proverbial cake.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 23:10 (twenty-one years ago)

hellbaby (hellbaby), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 04:59 (twenty-one years ago)

cool! september 11th: ramones night, Arc Cafe, Dunedin. starring heaps of bands including The Shutups, and DJ Duckling.

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 05:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I've done 'gig' threads for other prev months and this is the first that has really got going so that's really cool.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 07:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Múm were great, yes very sonic, very textural, far more rhythmically intense than on record, although why the venue management made the place as cold as Iceland in winter is beyond me

mentalist (mentalist), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 08:37 (twenty-one years ago)

This is going to sound rather humdrum, but I'm going to see Spiritualized next week.

Daniel (dancity), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 09:42 (twenty-one years ago)

we keep going to the same gigs: are you gonna see alan wilkinson abuse a saxophone tomorrow?

dada- it wasn't a proper gig space. the point is to move around a bit and you weren't expected to sit there for three hours.

The 'Spanish or italian' comment isn't funny 9or wasit just meant to be an observation?).

a. Where is he abusing his sax? I'll be watching Scotland lose to Germany.

b. I don't think anyone sat there for 3 hours - the point is why would anyone stand in front of someone and obscure their view? Even worse why would you NOT move out of the way when you're asked to?

c. That's an observation, unfortunately - apologies to all Spanish and Italian people who don't stand in front of me at gigs.

Dadaismus (Dada), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 10:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Its at ryan's bar, stoke newington and its on wednesday the 17th and not today. my mistake.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 10:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Dammit, what country did the Mum gigs take place in? I really hope it wasn't in London or I'll be very annoyed at missing them. I'm really digging the new record. ILM has ruined me.

Any good gigs happening next week in London? HSA is going to Fareham to prepare for his installation so I'm going to be on my lonesome and booooorrrred.

kate (kate), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 13:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Parts & Labor, Sightings, USA Is a Monster, People of the North and Shy Child, all together, Sept 20 in Brooklyn. Benefit for Igvinomous (sp?), a new label/nonprofit thing, or so I've been told...

Hurlothrumbo (hurlothrumbo), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 15:01 (twenty-one years ago)

oh, rad. where? i just got back and am out of the bklyn loop.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 17:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Seeing the Bad Plus in Milwaukee tonight (The Onion gave me free tickets!).

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 17:10 (twenty-one years ago)

welcome home, Lauren -- it's at what used to be Good/Bad, now I think it's called the Orphanage. It's at South 1st and Hooper.

The benefit is for some new, nebulous undertaking of Kyle Lapidus' -- I'm not too clear on it, but what the hell, it's a good time guaranteed...

Hurlothrumbo (hurlothrumbo), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 17:14 (twenty-one years ago)

yes, that is a guaranteed good time. nyc-area folks, you will be severely missing out if you miss this.
i hope the place has been rehabbed a bit, though. not to sound like a priss, but good/bad was kind of... disgusting? i think that's the word i'm looking for.

(hi, rthacher. i miss you guys.)

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 17:23 (twenty-one years ago)

damn, you even missed by birthday...sigh...you work too hard, lady.

Hurlothrumbo (hurlothrumbo), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 17:26 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm seeing l'usine tomorrow night with accelera deck tomorrow evening, september the 11th - mogwai the night after on the 12th. then, yo la tengo and the aisler's set next monday, matthew dear and yip-yip next thursday, pole (his only US appearance supposedly) on october 3rd and radiohead on october 4th in west palm beach. i'm also catching the sea and cake /w kingsbury manx on the 27th, trans am the night before on the 26th, and rounding it all out with prefuse73 october 11th.

whew, and all in my happening little slice of the world - orlando, FL (which is actually blowing up mad elektroniks lately with the lads from nophi.net throwing PUSH nights every thursday and bringing in the big names).

finally, the lightning bolt tour. i was beginning to think they'd decided not to tour - it's been a while since the album was released - march, wasn't it? The Knitting Factory show was great (but that was august 30th) - and so was the Providence Declares War show....I'm always in awe. It's never a disappointment....
