Yes, I'm talking about that (eerie|sleepy) late night showcase for all sorts of ambient, new age, chill-out, and weird world (music|muzak) that pop up late in the wee hours on your average NPR station.
Is it:

  • A) A precocious, post-everything tapestry of electro-organic textures all alone in the night....or
  • B) A pretentious, Yanni-scented wasteland of shapeless audio sedatives?

LET ILM DECIDE!

Dud. Occasionally something worthwhile - his new age whispering is annoying as hell.

Hahahahaha!

John DiLoberta at home, eating dinner.
JD: pass the salt, hon.
Wife: ...huh?
JD: can you pass me the salt?
Wife: Um...do you want something?
JD: ...the salt... (Points to the salt shaker.
Wife: Oh. OH! You want the salt! (Passes the salt shaker)
JD: thanks.
Wife: No need to yell.
JD: sorry.

I've heard some pretty good things on that show, but it sometimes gets a little too bland for me. I don't like most New Age music (I think) or most electronic music (even the sort of old school stuff he tends to play). He used to be one of the DJs on WXPN, and I always found his radio persona ridiculously pretentious. (In fact, I once made some nasty comments about him in a letter that accompanied a contribution during their fund-raiser, comments which almost got read over the air. The DJ was reading part of the letter, but caught himself before he got to the line about Dilliberto. In retrospect, it was probably not appropriate to single him out for criticism in a letter like that, but he used to really get on my nerves.) He's toned down somewhat. He does have a fairly encyclopedic knowledge of music, or at least certain areas of it. One of the shows he used to DJ on WXPN not only played the sort of thing now played on Echoes, but also used to play free jazz, post-punk, industrial, and more abrasive things in general.

He's toned down somewhat.
What was he like before he "toned down"?
