Article Response: First Avenue

This is partly an oral history of how Prince and the bands around him broke down segregation barriers in Minneapolis, partly a junior "Please Kill Me" of Minnesota. There are interviews with Jimmy Jam and ?uestlove online, as well as quotes from Slug (who scribbled the print version of the headline: "First Love"). Have at it.

That Matos character you quote seems like a shady bastard. I wouldn't trust him!

Michaelangelo Matos makes children faint and puppies cry.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Friday, 5 September 2003 22:53 (twenty-one years ago)

And he is a slob! I saw him accidentally drop guacamole on his shirt once so that is PROOF of his ultrafilthosity!

As far as the article goes, it's fascinating stuff -- though I was a bit irked by the gratutious disco-hate (disclaimer: I was not around back then) and depressed by the general "you know, this may not be around much longer and we were lucky it was around this long anyways" tone.

I'm sort of glad I wasn't asked to contribute because the only insight I'd have would be about the first time I went (to see Meat Beat Manifesto ca. '98) and was harangued by a large somewhat unnerving gentleman who tried to convince me about the benefits of Sc**nt*l*gy.

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Friday, 5 September 2003 22:59 (twenty-one years ago)

OOOOOH! OOOOOH! I WANT THOSE JAM/LEWIS COMPS! HOLY MOLEY!

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Friday, 5 September 2003 23:07 (twenty-one years ago)

"John Smith, First Avenue employee, DJ, 1993-present: Insane Clown Posse came in and did a cameo for free during Club 241. It was early, so there were probably 40 people. It was one of those things where the curtain went up, and there's two guys in clown makeup rapping to a DAT tape. Everybody was like, 'Well, that's interesting.' Curtain goes down, we go back to what we were doing."

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Friday, 5 September 2003 23:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, it's very touching -- how a something as ordinary as a club could serve as the focus of love and memories for a city full of musiclovers.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Saturday, 6 September 2003 00:13 (twenty-one years ago)

(Of course I hear that kind of thing all the time about CBGBs, but I guess the weight of history makes its story not quite as gratifying to me. Plus, First Avenue's much larger than CBGBs, thus making it more amenable to moments of communal aesthetic ecstasy.)

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Saturday, 6 September 2003 00:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I have that Jam-Lewis comp, Michael, if you want me to burn it for you.

Pete Scholtes, Sunday, 7 September 2003 18:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I loved the First Avenue thing Pete (and I've loved reading your CP stuff for ages...same goes to all of you who've dropped a line there...oh wait, that's patting myself of the back as well. But my shit's a) not nearly as frequently occurring and b) not nearly as good as Pete/Matos/Patrin et al.)

My favorite part was about Conrad, or at least seeing his picture again. I'd forgotten about that dude.I remember the first time I saw him in there; I was pretty loaded on booze and he struck up a conversation with me. I thought he was homeless or something. The picture in the article makes him look a lot less frightening than I remember.

I first went there in 1986 with a fake ID and it was totally a pilgrimage of sorts to Prince. Hah, me and everyone else did that. But while I went in looking for Prince, I came out with the Replacements and the main room never seemed like a place that Prince could call his home anyway. I guess that explains Glam Slam.
