(Or electropop jazz-lite - what's not to love?)

I don't know their other albums but this is a real joy in all its overproduced 70s synth-drenched cheese-dripping glory from the intricate cascades of "Pinocchio" to the spooky noises of the title track to the pure blanked-out happy-pretty stuff in the first track.

I heard a Muzak version of "Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" in the grocery store today. I'd never appreciated the song so much before.

I think the title track of this album is great for Halloween. Dread-inducing walking synth bass line, twilight zoney tri-tone synth wash... I can just picture apple bobbing contests with this on in the background (with parents smoking pot in the den).

one year passes...
Holy shit River People! Well, the first half anyway - it's a bit weak when the drums come in.

doesn't River People sound like something jay dee coulda produced?

jaxon, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 17:34 (eighteen years ago)

This is actually decent? I know the critics absolutely KILLED it upon its release...

Naive Teen Idol, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 22:52 (eighteen years ago)

it's not the best album in the world, but there's some really interesting things going on and it's usually found in the dollar bins, so it's not a terrible investment. i have river people up at my site http://www.robotsinheat.com and i think that song is just amazing. i like a lot of late 70s jazz, so maybe i'm crazy? it's been a minute, but i seem to remember the first track being a really cool african experiment too?

"River People" isn't bad -- even after the drums enter. Interesting that this isn't Zawinul's but Jaco's. My only real disappointment is that the vox are the only thing about it that's legitimately weird...

Naive Teen Idol, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 03:28 (eighteen years ago)

Maybe not a Dilla track, but if it came out on DFA today the only thing that would surprise people is how awesome it is.

Hurting 2, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 03:31 (eighteen years ago)

The drums aren't bad, just a bit disappointing because the beat sounds like it's going to be so kickin.

I find the album nice enough. But then, I like Spyro Gyra and Mezzoforte too.

What an awful cover though..

I think most people like Weather Report's catalog backwards. Heavy Weather is one of my least favorite of their records.

I mean, Teen Town is the song all those bass solo jokes are about, basically
