i rarely venture into ilm to post, but i want to know this.
i have recently met quite a few people who say they 'havent a clue' what the lyrics are, they just like the sounds.
for me, lyrics are pretty important. yes the music too of course but i prefer to understand what is being told as well.
you?

MUSIC.

(It's more immediate.)

Shite lyrics can be redeemed by incredible music, but the reverse is rarely if ever true.

I'm sorry I can't explain this more right now -- even though it's something I think about all the fucking time -- but I'm a wee bit drunk.

yep i have to admit its the music that is more immediate and grabs me first, but i can handle crap music if the lyrics get me.

Agree totally with ham on rye. I couldn't give a rat's ass what the person is talking about, so long as the singing is done well. I mean, if I want poetry, I'd, you know, read poetry.

It depends on the kind of music for me - I used to be totally a lyrics person, and I'd pay quite close attention to the lyrics of rock songs in particular. Now it's much more the overall impact of a song, or a single sound or hook that draws me in - but if it's a vocal hook then I do register the words.

Case in point - Basement Jaxx's new "Good Luck". What sold me on the song was the chorus hook - the way the Bellrays singer belts out "Good luck! Good luck in your new bed!" - it's a great, venomous line and the delivery's really angry. Now in terms of scansion she could have been singing "Apples! Come and buy some apples!" - it would still have been a great hook in a great track, but the mood would be different (and I think it would be less great). So part of me is still listening for lyrics - they don't even have to make sense, just sound good together as words (eg "House Of Jealous Lovers" - awesome phrase, great title, sounds good yelled, essentially a blank meaning-wise).

Yeah totally. That sums up the way in which I appreciate most hip hop lyrics, the aural aesthetic properties of it. Which isn't to say that I never pay attention to the meaning, but I've listened to tracks for years, could recite almost all the words, and still couldn't tell you what he/she was actually talking about.

music first, but really bad lyrics have the potential to ruin a song for me..

This is just about a pitch-perfect (... d'oh!) reflection of my own feelings. If I am into the song, the production, the beat, the riff, a vocal performance, fierce piano chops... or any comination of said musical qualities, it passes with me. Great lyrics, should I even put in the effort to listen to them (seriously, I've been known to listen to a song forty times without knowing what the words are), are just icing on the cake.

"Good Luck" is a nice example of such an icing-ed cake.

(... but damned if I'm not gonna hear "Apples," during the chorus from here on out.)

oh god, hell if I know. Different songs grab me for different reasons.

I'll say this. Music is what makes it good but lyrics is what tends to make it great.

i think lyrics are important and can totally redeem songs. (well, maybe not with *bad* music, rather just simple or trite music that obviously pushes your attention to the lyrics - old country, *good* folk, storytellers, momus).

what catches me first depends on what the song is putting forth, but i think they both catch up with each other in the end and make for a good song or not. i also don't think shite lyrics (that you can actually make out and have to hear every time) can ever be redeemed. oh wait, but i love t-rex. damn. is this like one of those looks or personality questions?
