Sade: Hologram or Dud?

None of her records are "essential". Every song sounds exactly the same. But I saw her perform at Madison Square Garden this friday, got free tix for the floor area once inside, drank 3 glasses of champagne, and was in heaven, even though the show sounded exactly like her CDs but more muffled. The amorosity was so thick in the air that I asked the video operator "if tech people have groupies, too".

I say Classic for her inessentiality, her total disinterest in sonic novelty, her striving for a song so perfect that it could just cancel out in your ears, make no noise, effortless, a direct effect on the Wistful Cortex.

Obviously she's too slight for me to even haven an opinion about it, but:

"I say Classic for her inessentiality, her total disinterest in sonic novelty, her striving for a song so perfect that it could just cancel out in your ears, make no noise, effortless, a direct effect on the Wistful Cortex."

= Classic.

She's so goddamn cool... and her voice on the 'new' record, so smokey and emotive. I don't know if she's classic, but definitely classy. Beachwood Sparks do a lovely Sade cover on the new LP.

And she looks so sexy...

Kodanshi, Wednesday, 15 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Back in the day she used to live here, in the very apartment block I now live in. Rumour has it she's got a Class A problem, or at the very least a schunk problem.

suzy, Wednesday, 15 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Of course all her songs are the same, so are Britney Spears and no one was bitchin' 'bout that on the Britney thread.

Do you remember Mozzer's dis on her? That she was a 2nd-rate Lady Day? I've never seen this coerlation, personally - but I wonder where this could be coming from? Surely as I **hate** anything remotely sniffing around Adult Contemp(t) - Sade is one saving grace on VH1....

jason, Thursday, 16 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It's like she's in mourning for something.

Whatsis schunk? Whatever her Problem is, it never quite goes away.

(btw, the Neptunes remix of "by your side" is suprisingly (for me) really terrible)

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 16 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Suzy, based on your post, I have come up with several not-very-entertaining definitions of "schunk" —

1. weed. hence constant bleary eyes and "mellow" demeanor
2. insomnia + valium, as above
3. having too many babies ("schunk" = sound of "god's little miracles" arriving, as vocalized by bill hicks)
4. finding the wrong meatheads to settle down with

Rumor has it that Sade is on either a plane or bus before the audience has stopped clapping for the last encore

this is the archetypal suzy post isn't it?

Classic and I rated Love Deluxe very high on the best of the 90's poll; so there.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 06:27 (twenty-one years ago)

me too (#10)

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 06:35 (twenty-one years ago)

anyway, suzy's gossip stuff really bugs me cos it seems so petty and showoffy. "rumor has it" = what rumor? from who? why should we care?

there really are few things on ilx that bother me more than pointlessly corrosive (or just smarmy) celebrity gossip, esp. when it comes with an intimation of being "in the know."

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 06:37 (twenty-one years ago)

my old boss did this kind of thing too: she would name drop constantly, and usually provide some kind of "dirt" of dubious provenance. is this a habit common to editors?

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 06:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Completely classic. Nominated 'Love Deluxe' to the poll. It makes me sad and alienated, but I love it.

'By Your Side' is one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard!

Aweh I thought it was really good. Her voice sounds oddly auto-tuned on it though? Or maybe I'm wrong..
