AWK: glee metal?

If Andrew W.K.'s music was called glee-metal, would it make more people want to listen to it? I think so!
Anyway, I like the mindset it creates... and it would be a blow against some people I've known who've hated it for being so one-note happy... uh gleeful. Maybe.

(actually I don't think it would make more people want to listen to it... but I like the name)

Well, "Love metal" worked for HIM, so maybe you're onto something.

Øystein Holm-Olsen (Øystein H-O), Sunday, 7 September 2003 17:36 (twenty-one years ago)

his new album is great

chaki (chaki), Sunday, 7 September 2003 17:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't wait to hear it... I really like the recent single "Tear it Up" (didn't at first, but it really grew on me), esp. the middle breakdown with epic guitar chords rolling off one after the other.

Brandon Mitchell (A.H.), Sunday, 7 September 2003 17:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I always felt that if cockroaches were called "happy fun beetles" people would be less inclined to freak out over them. Like june bugs, they're kind of creepy too, but they're June bugs, and who could hate something called that?

I'd still probably think WK was piss poor no matter what he called his music, though...

New Wave Of American Wagnerian Rock.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 7 September 2003 18:33 (twenty-one years ago)

twee metal?

Salvation rules again.

I thought Ned was Andrew WK!

If you wanted to get my current state, you'd show the snot dripping out of my left nostril instead of hinting at blood argh I hate the constant colds I get I HATE THEM.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 7 September 2003 19:28 (twenty-one years ago)

New Wave Of American Wagnerian Rock

This is also a pretty flattering genre name. I like it.

Brandon Mitchell (A.H.), Sunday, 7 September 2003 19:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Who else is included in this New Wave of American Wagnerian Rock? To be a genre more than one act has to be included or else it's just a discription. So who else is in the new wave of American Wagnerian Rock?

aka, me at 6 am any given morning.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 7 September 2003 20:27 (twenty-one years ago)

let's see. the old wave was stuff like the E Street Band and Meat Loaf. There hasn't been much yet but give it time. I'm tempted to include the All-American Rejects because they have a really over-the-top Spectoresque sense of arrangements.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 7 September 2003 22:28 (twenty-one years ago)

arguably Queens Of The Stone Age "No One Knows" fits too.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 7 September 2003 22:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Is Andrew WK really Wagnerian though, even in the Meat Loaf way? "Wagnerian" would seem to imply epic builds to giant dramatic climaxes. At most AWK maybe starts out at the climax and stays there. If anything, maybe closer to the 'tradition' of some Slade or Sweet hits or stuff like "Black Betty" or pop-punk or something than Springsteen (much more of a 'songwriter') or Meat Loaf. Unless the new album's very different from I Get Wet. (Goddamn I missed a chance to find out tonight because his show was sold out.) "Electro-stomp rock"? I'm not sure what else would fit in other than "Sk8er Boi". Could maybe throw in some Linkin Park or "Bring Me to Life" if you're keeping things broad enough.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Monday, 8 September 2003 03:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Although "glee metal" is actually a really good name too, probably better.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Monday, 8 September 2003 03:33 (twenty-one years ago)

haha, my naivete re: classical music revealed!

New Wave Of Spectoresque Rock maybe. That might not work for "Bring Me To Life" but Glee Metal sure doesn't work for "BTML" either. Glee Metal implies a consistency in mood rather than in arrangement.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 8 September 2003 21:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I was actually thinking of "glee metal" in terms of glee clubs! (Not sure what THAT kind of glee metal would be. Nelson, maybe? Queen??)

Aren't Electric Six (and Junior Senior) sort of in the same genre as AWK (who I like way less than either, more for being one-note-period than for being one-note-gleeful. But he's okay. The first album was like "We're not Gonna Take It" by Twisted Sister over and over again, except not as good. Somebody told me the new one sounds like Europe crossed with Asia -- both of whom were considerably more Wagnerian, probably -- but I think they might've been just making a joke.)

chuck, Monday, 8 September 2003 21:49 (twenty-one years ago)

And okay, it wasn't really the "FIRST album", per se. I know I know. (I even have some shitty old Wolf Eyes 12-inch with him on it somewhere. Big effing deal.)

chuck, Monday, 8 September 2003 21:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Well I certainly like AWK a bit more than you do, but I agree with the grouping of him with Junior Senior under the "glee" title. I was realizing the other day then when I put either of those two cds on, they both make me want to party and move. And both put me in a great mood.
Haven't heard Electric Six though.

Brandon Mitchell (A.H.), Monday, 8 September 2003 22:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't get the "glee" tag wrt: AWK. The range of his subject matter is broad in scope: hate, love, sex, death...

I think the "one-note" critics above are showing a cursory appreciation of his work (oh wait this is ILM nevermind).

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 8 September 2003 22:28 (twenty-one years ago)

ILM doesn't "get" Andrew WK

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 8 September 2003 22:34 (twenty-one years ago)

well glee isn't meant to be derogatory (sp?)... anyway don't his songs about hate, love, sex, death etc. sound gleeful? ("Ready to Die" anyone?)

Brandon Mitchell (A.H.), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 00:10 (twenty-one years ago)

This is neither here nor there, but the last track on The Wolf is "I Love Music."

Brandon Mitchell (A.H.), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 23:35 (twenty-one years ago)

chuck is wayy off the mark about awk.

i used to hate awk but now i really love him so much.

chaki (chaki), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 01:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I never hated Andrew WK, but the first, very monochromatic album gave me no reason to believe this guy will have much more cultural influence in the U.S. than Dexy's Midnight Runners (remember the guys in overalls who said "Too-Rye-Ay" vs. remember the guy in all white who said "Party"?). Maybe the Wolf is better.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 01:27 (twenty-one years ago)

A shiny gold turd for the person inspired by my post to talk up the solo career of Kevin Rowland on this thread.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 01:32 (twenty-one years ago)

i meant to say "chuck is wayy off the mark about the new awk" or at least what he heard about the new album. his vocal melodies are great and the 3 guitars are always doing fun and interesting things that make me want to play guitar in awk's band. but fuck all that anyway cuz its really not about his music its about HIM and what an awesome silly guy he is!!!!
