videos stink: songs whose videos were almost ruined by them

Everyone got one...a video that almost spoiled the song. Or succeeded, actually. Let me mention one of the earliest, best examples: Rockit by Herbie Hancock. Entertaining video, sure...but my head was so full of breakdancing back then as to assimilate the two together.

paul bucenec (Henry), Sunday, 7 September 2003 19:58 (twenty-one years ago)

It was played a lot then, too. MTV had only like 20 videos back then, too.

paul bucenec (Henry), Sunday, 7 September 2003 20:00 (twenty-one years ago)

The title of the thread is misleading...it's songs ruined by their videos.
Sorry. I'm silly.

paul bucenec (Henry), Sunday, 7 September 2003 20:07 (twenty-one years ago)

so, what happened in the rockit vid?

dog latin (dog latin), Sunday, 7 September 2003 20:24 (twenty-one years ago)

There was Herbie behind a keyboard, but really as a sidenote to the freakish animated mannequin pieces that were walking around the room. It was really a wonderful tittering piece of artwork.

But for me, the song "Rockit" existed as a nocturnal, kinda sinister soundscape. And I thought of city kids spinning on their heads in the twilight. I was a small towner during that time, so hey...the song got spoiled by the otherness of the vid. Killed the fantasy and the danger.

paul bucenec (Henry), Sunday, 7 September 2003 20:42 (twenty-one years ago)

teardrop my massive attack

you're all mentalists

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 7 September 2003 20:48 (twenty-one years ago)

well maybe not, but can a video really spoil a song? does this mean it can also improve it? I do find that if a song's got a great video then I will like the song more or at least feel more of an attachment to it e.g. Queens Of The Stone Age 'Go With The Flow' - pretty mediocre drawling rawk, but with the awesome video it becomes closer to 'ultimate sleazy anthemic runaway road-trip blood-red sunset drawling rawk' instead

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 7 September 2003 20:51 (twenty-one years ago)

i might have to start a 'videos that were ruined by the song' thread - cf. Athlete's 'You Got The Style'!

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 7 September 2003 20:52 (twenty-one years ago)

"Loose Cannon" by Killing Joke - Not their finest track to begin with, but the accompanying video is appalling (the band do not appear in it, rather the entirety of the vid centers around a shirtless 'contortionist' with cornrows, basically breakdancing and lipsyching. Imagine a hellish version of "Untitled" by D'Angelo. Yes, it's that bad.

"Change" by Tears for Fears - Only recently saw this (courtesy of VH1 Classic) and was quite visually violated. Having always loved this track, it was disapointing to see the thoroughly silly clip that went with it.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 7 September 2003 20:53 (twenty-one years ago)

The video for "Tower of Strength" by the Mission was like a criminally low-budget episode of "Dr.Who" that robbed the song of semblance of dignity (something already in short supply for the band in question).

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 7 September 2003 20:54 (twenty-one years ago)

that massive attack video was fucking scary.

j'aime les sucettes (call mr. lee), Sunday, 7 September 2003 20:57 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah for me too - they always make interesting vids but this time they had a stupid idea and spend a load of cash going with it!

jed (jed_e_3), Sunday, 7 September 2003 21:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Separate Ways by Journey seemed to rock, but then that vid with Steve Perry in "ready stance" and muscle-shirt!

I wonder if people wouldn't have thought of 80's music quite differently had it not been for the incredible onslaught of videos. Once videos became de rigeur for all wide-release songs, they seemd to match their songs better and better.

p.j. (Henry), Sunday, 7 September 2003 21:04 (twenty-one years ago)

"Time Stand Still" by Rush. Great song. Worst...video...ever...

Andrew Frye (paul cox), Sunday, 7 September 2003 21:19 (twenty-one years ago)

"Here Comes Your Man" by Pixies. They should never have *made* a video for that one.

Lewis J. Bateman (Lewis Bateman), Monday, 8 September 2003 02:43 (twenty-one years ago)

"'Change' by Tears for Fears"

Aaaaa, this is one of the most incredible videos I've seen. It has that awesome dance with just the arms, and the Japanese influenced costumes. And the setting. Well, it may be a thoroughly silly clip, but It goes so well with the silly sound.

A Nairn (moretap), Monday, 8 September 2003 03:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Is "Time Stands Still" the video where they're floating in mid-air?

sundar subramanian (sundar), Monday, 8 September 2003 03:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd vote for ANY pixies song - for such an important band of the 90s they sure did make some DULL video clips.

Aother Mish one too - "Stay with Me", with that bogawful gothic set and Wayne Hussey dancing with that...whatever it was...dried up apple faced lady mannequin. Dreadful.

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 8 September 2003 03:24 (twenty-one years ago)

but can a video really spoil a song? does this mean it can also improve it?>

Maybe not entirely, but I bet any money a lot less people would like "Windowlicker" and "Come to Daddy" if it werent for the clips that go with 'em...

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 8 September 2003 03:25 (twenty-one years ago)

"Breakin' The Law" - Judas Priest

"I Won't Let You Down" - PhD

Trayce: >I'd vote for ANY pixies song - for such an important band of the 90s they sure did make some DULL video clips.<

That's true, except HCYM was from the '80s. Anyhoo...
"Pyramid Song" - Radiohead. Also "Fake Plastic Trees" and "No Surprises."
"Stupid Girl" - Garbage. A rare case where a video entirely *did* ruin a song.
"Me, Myself and I" - De La Soul
"Firestarter" - Prodigy
"Keep Feeling Fascination" - Human League. Of course, in that case the song wasn't all that good.

Lewis J. Bateman (Lewis Bateman), Monday, 8 September 2003 05:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Aother Mish one too - "Stay with Me", with that bogawful gothic set and Wayne Hussey dancing with that...whatever it was...dried up apple faced lady mannequin. Dreadful.

yeah, that's awful, but I believe it was supposed to be 'funny' in a sort've "Carry On, Goth" sorta way. Regardless, it's tragic.

"Breakin' The Law" - Judas Priest

Oh you're crazy, I think this video is fuckin' hilarious.

"Firestarter" - Prodigy

I think that vid's completely brilliant, actually. Abandoned subway tunnels, silly piercings, stupid hair and silly sweaters....what's not to like?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 8 September 2003 12:02 (twenty-one years ago)

>"Keep Feeling Fascination" - Human League. Of course, in that case the song wasn't all that good.

That video was awesome. The house is like, red.

fletrejet, Monday, 8 September 2003 12:17 (twenty-one years ago)

There's one moment in that clip that I remember liking, when the children in the street throw a ball into the orange space, their ball and, like, clothes turn orange too, man! Faaaaaaaaaar out!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 8 September 2003 12:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm generally disappointed by any Depeche Mode video I see.

Dave Kendall of 120 minutes dissed on the "Velouria" video once and as Black Francis recounted the story in an interview, he slammed his beer down quite hard. Too bad Kendall was right, Frank. I was lucky enough to only have seen the video once.

p.j. (Henry), Monday, 8 September 2003 21:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I love "Change" by Tears For Fears. The dancing rocks (not to mention the song is totally like a Minor Threat 45 played at 33 with the guitars replaced by vibraphones). Though "Pale Shelter" is even better. It's so emo.

This is hard for me to judge. I try really hard to experience videos and songs with videos as separate experiences so they rarely get ruined...Judas Priest videos, which are more homoerotic than Queen's usually, make the songs more tolerable usually (sometimes Halford looks like he's just salivating for cock, like that one about how awesome car races are). I can definitely think of more mediocre songs made somewhat memorable by videos than songs that were ruined(gee, I wonder why some Fatboy Slim songs are more popular than others). Hell, I even like "Rock Me Tonight" more when I realize Squier's so desparate to be rocked that he's dancing like a ninny. Nothing mentioned here qualifies as ruined by its video, personally.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 8 September 2003 21:50 (twenty-one years ago)

HA! I just remembered one! Even though I've seen the video numerous times, I haven't a clue what Puff Daddy's "Victory" actually sounds like. The sound effects (thunder, explosions) and very loud cameos by Danny DeVito and Dennis Hopper made it practically IMPOSSIBLE to hear the song. It was the pinnacle of the Hype Williams/McG era of song-interrupting videos.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 8 September 2003 21:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll agree with Vinnie on some of Depeche Modes vids - all the ones they did with the handheld cam in Spain or wherever when Gahan was off his trolley on smack are pretty dull ("Personal Jesus" comes to mind most of all).

oh and not that I care for the song much anyway but JAYSUS if the video clip for "Ca Plane Pour Moi" annoys me, it gives me a headache.

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 8 September 2003 22:07 (twenty-one years ago)

"Personal Jesus" was the one I was mainly thinking of too. Cowboy hats and outstretched hands - um, yeah. Nearly the opposite of what I envisioned.

Vinnie (vprabhu), Monday, 8 September 2003 22:28 (twenty-one years ago)

'Pyramid Song' is a great video but then i am a complete Shynola disciple

'Me Myself I' is also great! De La Soul as high school dorks - what's not to love?

stevem (blueski), Monday, 8 September 2003 22:30 (twenty-one years ago)

No Surprises is my favourite video EVER. At age 10, the video for Lullaby nearly put me off the Cure for good, but it was only for a few months as it turned out... and it was on children's TV! What the hell was all that about?

Damian (Damian), Monday, 8 September 2003 23:23 (twenty-one years ago)

"Personal Jesus" was the one I was mainly thinking of too. Cowboy hats and outstretched hands - um, yeah. Nearly the opposite of what I envisioned

Goddamn you people are completely missing the whole point of Anton Corbijn's existence.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 8 September 2003 23:25 (twenty-one years ago)

"Here Comes Your Man" by Pixies. They should never have *made* a video for that one.

I soooooo disagree. I love that Black and Kim just hold their mouths wide open when they're supposed to be mouthing lyrics.

Andrew Frye (paul cox), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 01:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Though "Pale Shelter" is even better. It's so emo

"Pale Shelter" is indeed sublime, but calling it "emo" is like puncturing a colostomy bag and spilling its tepid, runny contents all over it. Fuckin' SHAME ON YOU AGAIN, Anthony!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 02:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I must say almost all you bitchers here are off your fucking rockers.

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 03:57 (twenty-one years ago)

OK, so what are we supposed to say, in a thread thats specifically about crap videos? "I say, this videos actually rather good"???

*confused*

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 04:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Goddamn you people are completely missing the whole point of Anton Corbijn's existence.

Hang on, didnt Gahan do that film himself? Was it Corbijn, or was he doing a homage? I guess I've missed this point if so. Doesn't make me like it any better though - hell, I love Depeche Mode, I just cant stand that song anymore. Hang out in goth clubs with 18 year olds for a few years and it'll do it to you too ;)

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 04:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Fair enough, Breakin' the Law is so bad it's good. So the distinction between a good video and a bad one does begin to blur. Speaking of Blur, what about the Country House video?

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 04:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I love Depeche Mode, I just cant stand that song anymore.

I love Depeche Mode, I just haven't been able to stand Dave Gahan for years now.

Andrew Frye (paul cox), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 04:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, you're mad. But I would say this.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 04:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Whose album did you like better this year, Ned? Dave's or Martin's?

Andrew Frye (paul cox), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 12:24 (twenty-one years ago)

"OK, so what are we supposed to say, in a thread
thats specifically about crap videos? "I say,
this videos actually rather good"???

*confused*"

The *original* idea for the thread was not that the video was necessarily bad, but that it ruined the song for you.

I think that's why people jumped the Pixies...they are just trying a liiiiitle bit too hard to be cute/smart/funny. Or maybe I'm over-anal-yzing.

p.j. (Henry), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 13:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Wait, was that video Gahan's or Corbijn's? I generally like Corbijn's photographs... I still like "Personal Jesus", btw, just not the video.

Vinnie (vprabhu), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 18:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Whose album did you like better this year, Ned? Dave's or Martin's?

Dave's, actually, because it surprised me more in the end, in a very good way.

All Depeche videos since "A Question of Time" on, with only a couple of exceptions, are Corbijn's. As far as I can recall Gahan has never directed a video.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 21:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Fair point thre pj :)

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 02:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll have to do Dave's album through headphones, then. I didn't really favor Martin's (other than for obvious reasons) until it was nanometers from my eardrums -- there's so many little things going on.

eleven years pass...

"I Won't Let You Down" - PhD

there were two music videos for this song though!

The original video of the song was set in and around the Queensway area of West London. As with the band's previous single "Little Suzi's On The Up", the video is shot in a slapstick comedy style and features Jim Diamond as a well-dressed man trying to win back the affections of his lover (thus mirroring the theme of the song) using presents and taking her to upmarket bars and restaurants. Tony Hymas appears as the video’s antagonist; in various scenes dressed in various disguises he makes unsuccessful attempts to assassinate, or maim Jim Diamond’s character in order to win the affections of the woman. He is finally successful when, posing as a car dealer, he lures Diamond into a second hand car (a white Fiat 128), which is revealed to be on the end of a crane in a scrapyard being lifted up, whilst Hymas walks away with the girl as the camera zooms out and fades to black.

The second version was set in a dressing room at a club with Diamond performing the song as he professes his love to a woman sitting next to him. He also looks at the mirror and after he turns around his image also sings. In the end, Diamond does win over the woman, but after he leaves the room as his mirror image walks up to her (who was actuality looking in the mirror at Diamond).

the first version isn't that great, but the second one is excellent. this song is awesome btw, was Jim Diamond involved in anything else as good as this? I'm not wild about 'I Should Have Known Better'

also, young Jim Diamond looked kind of like Tim Farron:

Berlin "No More Words" with the meaningless Bonnie & Clyde video.

As for fun yet preposterous videos, see Quarterflash "Harden My Heart" (the one with the flamethrowers).

"Here Comes Your Man" never should have been the single, period. "Oh yeah, I've heard the Pixies. Kind of like R.E.M.?" Not really, but we wouldn't know it from this cowardly choice of single.
