So, has anyone figured a non-$$$ way? Or at least a site that's maybe not super complete, but will have most just-under-the-radar indie artists (say, on the level of the Shins for example)?

You could always shoot a request to Metal Sludge for their monthly Sludgescan feature.

You can ask for things that don't fit into their scope. Their latest update even gives the Soundscan total for the new Pavement reissue (likely requested by a reader rather than something the Sludgers would look up on their own).
