Play that dead guy's song, play it all night long...hope there's a seedy Havana-themed hotel bar up there where you can drink gin with gun-runners and headless mercenaries. "Got a 38 special up on the shelf/ if I start actin' stupid I'm-a shoot myself..." RIP. (PS - send me down some lawyers, guns and money and I'll get ya beatified)

A true loss. Still haven't forgetten his solo show in the mid-80s in Providence.
Yet another reason why I FUCKING HATE CIGARETTES and any asshole who's still dumb enough to smoke.

Jazzbo (jmcgaw), Monday, 8 September 2003 10:45 (twenty-one years ago)

'Roland The Headless Thompson Gunner', 'Nightime In The Switching Yard', 'Excitable Boy', 'Werewolves Of London', 'Sentimental Hygeine', 'Lawyers Guns And Money', 'Bad Karma'... the guy wrote some brilliant songs.

laticsmon, Monday, 8 September 2003 10:54 (twenty-one years ago)

A sad day.

dave225 (Dave225), Monday, 8 September 2003 11:05 (twenty-one years ago)

For a guy with terminal cancer & 3 months to live, he had what seemed like a pretty great final year. RIP.

Mark (MarkR), Monday, 8 September 2003 12:01 (twenty-one years ago)

"I FUCKING HATE CIGARETTES and any asshole who's still dumb enough to smoke."

So are you for or against this death then?

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Monday, 8 September 2003 12:59 (twenty-one years ago)

rip.

J (Jay), Monday, 8 September 2003 13:52 (twenty-one years ago)

cripes. that's...I don't know. It's weird. Sad, I guess, but good that it didn't drag out painfully. Or TOO painfully.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 8 September 2003 13:58 (twenty-one years ago)

it's weird, he lasted so much longer than his original diagnosis that i'm kind of surprised he didn't stay alive another year. good timing to get the album out, i guess, and i don't mean that in a cynical way. at least he got to see it released.

Al (sitcom), Monday, 8 September 2003 15:18 (twenty-one years ago)

people will often hold on to see something happen, or to talk to someone, or something like that.
There was a story a few years ago about how the death rate went down in the last two months of 1999 and then shot up just after the big rollover. People just wanted to live to see the bold new century or whatever.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 8 September 2003 15:30 (twenty-one years ago)

he picked up smoking again when he was diagnosed!

teeny (teeny), Monday, 8 September 2003 15:41 (twenty-one years ago)

so did my grandma (whose cancer started in her breast)

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 8 September 2003 15:50 (twenty-one years ago)

aw, this is sad news

animal wrangler (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 8 September 2003 17:02 (twenty-one years ago)

:(

I mean, I guess we shouldn't be surprised, cuz we knew what was coming...but still, this brings the sadness.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 8 September 2003 17:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Oddly enough, I got his 2 CD best of a few days ago, meaning that I could finally listen to many of my favorite songs off the records I have on my iPod. Last night, I got around to 4-and-5-starring his best songs in iTunes, which automatically adds them to my 4-and-5-star-Warren-Zevon playlist. Said playlist ballooned from 1 hour to 2 1/2, and I put it on shuffle and read/fell asleep to it last night. No Zevon dreams or anything, and I'm a evangelistic believer in the power of sheer mindless had-to-happen-to-someone coincidence, but still, it was a little unnerving to wake up this morning and have three different condolence e-mails from friends who know he's one of my favorite songwriters. Somewhere, in a realm I don't empirically believe in, I like to think that Nick the Greek is congratulating Warren for having beat the spread.

Jesse Fuchs (Jesse Fuchs), Monday, 8 September 2003 18:24 (twenty-one years ago)

"I heard Woodrow Wilson's guns, I heard Maria crying,
'Vera Cruz is dying'".

nonthings (nonthings), Monday, 8 September 2003 19:14 (twenty-one years ago)

so it goes. at least he's not in pain anymore.

Felcher (Felcher), Monday, 8 September 2003 20:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd have to say that the David Letterman episode with Zevon earlier this year was one of the few times I've ever felt like I was actually seeing some honest, real human emotion on television...Dave did a tremendous job, and avoided turning it into a treacly (sp?) Katie Couric icky sentimental hack job....those two seemed to have a geniune affection for each other.

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 8 September 2003 21:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I mean, I guess we shouldn't be surprised, cuz we knew what was coming...
"Wow. I was supposed to only live for 3 months. Here it is, more than a year later. I almost feel like a fraud, here" -- Warren Zevon, Aug 2003

And now he's up in heaven, Probably playing poker with Bill Hicks and Lenny Bruce.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Monday, 8 September 2003 22:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought Warren Zevon was real cool.

Famous Athlete, Monday, 8 September 2003 22:07 (twenty-one years ago)

i read a review of the recent release of "the wind" it got the guy jumping out of his seat rating, anyone else heard it?.... it follows that a rebel would rebel aganst his own bodies rebellion against poisoning, or maybe he was just overly mothered in the first place.(do american spirits kill as much?)

jameslucasakarroland (jameslucasakarroland), Monday, 8 September 2003 22:36 (twenty-one years ago)

"Enjoy every sandwich."
--WZ on Letterman

nonthings (nonthings), Monday, 8 September 2003 23:06 (twenty-one years ago)

The new album is (I say tentatively, after only three or four listens) very good, but I'd recommend getting the 2-CD set, the resissue of "Sentimental Hygiene," or "Life'll Kill Ya" first, as I think they're better. But then again, I haven't really been able to bear down on the new one, as on some level it's just too painful. So there may be considerably more there than I'm hearing.

Jesse Fuchs (Jesse Fuchs), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 00:48 (twenty-one years ago)

that "fraud" line is so classic.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 13:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Warren Zevon will be missed, it so sad. He had the wit, talent, humor that you don't see everyday. He's music will go on and that's a good thing.Hopefully we can learn from him.

"I only wanted the Steve McQueen haircut!"-WZ

Bye-Bye baby, and Amen.

Charles McCain (Charles McCain), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 17:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, I went to the doctor
I said, "I'm feeling kind of rough"
He said, "I'll break it to you, son"
Your shit's fucked up.
I said, "my shit's fucked up?"
Well, I don't see how--"
He said, "The shit that used to work--
It won't work now."
