Adam Ant Slips Further and Further Away from Us: "SAVE THE GORILLAS!"

Courtesy of the Gathering.....

Adam Ant has re-recorded Stand and Deliver to raise awareness for Dian
Fossey's foundation (remember Gorilla's in the mist). Anyway, he has
>changed the lyrics to "Save the Gorilla's". Follow the links from here
http://www.adam-ant.net/whatsnew.html and you can download a clip. It is hilarious!

Sweet God Almighty. I've only just stopped laughing. It cannot be for real. Have you seen the animation that goes with it?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 8 September 2003 12:32 (twenty-two years ago)

It's got Boz Boorer on it!

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Monday, 8 September 2003 12:38 (twenty-two years ago)

*giggling incessantly like a gorilla on nitrous oxide*

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 8 September 2003 12:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Isn't he dating Heather Graham at the moment?

nathalie (nathalie), Monday, 8 September 2003 12:53 (twenty-two years ago)

*whimper* I refuse to believe.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 8 September 2003 13:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Not for about a decade.

Marcello Carlin, Monday, 8 September 2003 13:58 (twenty-two years ago)

how is this NOT the greatest thing ever?

gabbo giftington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 8 September 2003 14:00 (twenty-two years ago)

because behind the mirth there is real tragedy here

stevem (blueski), Monday, 8 September 2003 14:01 (twenty-two years ago)

It's really too sad for me to find the funny in this.

Larcole (Nicole), Monday, 8 September 2003 14:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Right now, I feel like Keanu Reeves when introduced to The Matrix. WTF?

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 8 September 2003 14:17 (twenty-two years ago)

HOLY SHIT this seriously is fantastic.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 8 September 2003 14:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Okay, there's no percussion to speak of but the VOCAL is classic!

OH MY GOD THERE IS GORILLA GRUNTING IN IT I THINK I'M GONNA DIE

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 8 September 2003 14:33 (twenty-two years ago)

dan OTM

gabbo giftington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 8 September 2003 14:33 (twenty-two years ago)

plus you just know when he dies you're gonna find gorilla paw ashtrays all over his house.

gabbo giftington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 8 September 2003 14:34 (twenty-two years ago)

like in donnie darko when they burned down patrick swayzes house.

gabbo giftington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 8 September 2003 14:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh God, I see Adam all the time in and around Camden - what a state he is in, I wish him all the best

Dadaismus (Dada), Monday, 8 September 2003 14:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm still flabbergasted. This is what not drinking and smoking does to you, people!

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 8 September 2003 14:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm sorry, but I'm very much with Larcole and others on this one. This is just too depressing to even think about.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 8 September 2003 15:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think this is as tragic as some of you are asserting. Is it frankly bizarre? Hell yeah, but the cause is an established one. It's not like Adam is rallying for extradition to Narnia or making a plea for the heretofore unsung rights of magical fish. He obviously caught a late night screening of "Gorillas in the Mist" and sought to do his part.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 8 September 2003 17:13 (twenty-two years ago)

It's not like Adam is rallying for extradition to Narnia or making a plea for the heretofore unsung rights of magical fish.

Now I am sad.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 8 September 2003 17:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, me too. Now I'm flabbergasted that he isn't rallying for this, though I'd be more likely to support environmental issues in Tarabithia.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 8 September 2003 17:30 (twenty-two years ago)

BUT THE MONKEY!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 8 September 2003 18:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Adam ca. 1983 would have dreamt this whole thing up as a publicity stunt

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Monday, 8 September 2003 18:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Seriously, I can't stop laughing at the animation. When his head appears on the gorilla it is like a nightmare and a dream all in one moment.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 8 September 2003 18:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh my God the monkey grunt! I seriously think I've rutpured a blood vessel in my brain laughing! Adam Ant ft. Mongo!!!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 8 September 2003 18:34 (twenty-two years ago)

OH MY GOD I just looked at the animation for the first time and I am now completely insane.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 8 September 2003 18:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I like the rockettes line of high-kicking, jogging-gear attired gorillas.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 8 September 2003 18:35 (twenty-two years ago)

next, Jaz Coleman rewrites "The Wait" as "The Whales" when his heart follows the plight of the Pacific Ocean whale population.

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 8 September 2003 18:37 (twenty-two years ago)

his pronunciation of "Save" points hopefully in the direction of Suede covering "Save the Gorillas" for the general betterment of humanity

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Monday, 8 September 2003 18:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I think he should've said "A monkey is for life" instead of "Your money for their lives". It'd be a clever take on those ASPCA ads about how puppies are with you for life, like you can't just take the fuckers out back and shoot themgive them to someone else.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 8 September 2003 18:38 (twenty-two years ago)

next, Jaz Coleman rewrites "The Wait" as "The Whales" when his heart follows the plight of the Pacific Ocean whale population

or as "The Way" after his surprising conversion experience

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Monday, 8 September 2003 18:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Dude, Johnny D is OTM--I thought that Suede thing as soon as he started "singing" ie trilling away! It's uncanny.

(Ok, I'm sorry, I shouldn't ever call anyone Johnny D)

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 8 September 2003 18:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm kinda baffled by the sadness here. Sure, I highly respect Ant's career as well.. but I mean, come on, how is this any more sad than artists who sell their songs or nostalgia value to fucking Burger King or Verizon Wireless or what not? At least, this is for a good cause.

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 8 September 2003 18:42 (twenty-two years ago)

db I believe the party line is "if something is used for advertising, that's really excellent"

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Monday, 8 September 2003 18:43 (twenty-two years ago)

...but to be less of an asshole about it, this is a pretty limply envisioned version of a once-mighty song - whither the double-drums, etc? If it actually had the magic oomph of the original "Stand and Deliver," it'd be a damned sight better

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Monday, 8 September 2003 18:44 (twenty-two years ago)

But J0hn, the lack of double-drums is the ONLY thing wrong with it. The singing itself is stellar and the LYRICAL CHANGES ARE GODLY.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 8 September 2003 19:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I think Nicole and I are both referring to his history of mental problems in recent years. In light of that, something this unusual seems...well, what is the word...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 8 September 2003 19:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I really wish I hadnt seen that. My money to save Adam s life!

Francis Watlington (Francis Watlington), Monday, 8 September 2003 20:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I think Nicole and I are both referring to his history of mental problems in recent years. In light of that, something this unusual seems...well, what is the word...

Fantastic?

Someone who is going directly to the bowels of hell (Dan Perry), Monday, 8 September 2003 21:18 (twenty-two years ago)

NOW YOU KNOW HOW US BRIAN WILSON FANS FEEL!!! REVENGE!!!!!

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 8 September 2003 21:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Er? I'm a fan as well, silly boy!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 8 September 2003 21:34 (twenty-two years ago)

(I know, Ned... look, at least, this is a step up from Ant messing around with guns)

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 8 September 2003 21:39 (twenty-two years ago)

(oh, and Gary Numan to thread)

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 8 September 2003 21:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Here with my plane

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 8 September 2003 21:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I just watched it again. And again. Then again.

There's something very sinister sounding about the phrase "Register for the Great Gorilla Fun Run" that I can't quite put my finger on.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 03:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I love you guys... this has made my day. I've passed it to the goth newsgroup I'm on, whereupon it should raise some fine hilarity.

If I had any money I'd donate it to Adam and his gorillas, for serious.

Genius.

In America, it's find God and save all the people. In UK, it's find God and save all the animals.

I sorta like the one where the intended can't vote.

Wu-Tang promise new direction

http://images.thesun.co.uk/picture/0,,2003410573,00.jpg

The pronunciation actually makes we wonder why Billy Bragg has never covered this.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 12:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Andrew, did it not occur to you that there are some really evil connotations in your previous post? (Posting a picture of "apes" and calling them Wu-Tang??????)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 13:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha now this really is the strangest thread ever.

da dilly qua qua (mlescaut), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 13:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know about connotations, since that's more imply than infer, and nothing was implied. I wondered if someone would take offence, and I'm more than willing to apologise if anyone's offended (er, are you offended, Dan?).

Besides, there are too many of them to be the Beastie Boys.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 14:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Must... resist.... pointless semantics argument...

I'm not offended, I'm more "Um, didn't that occur to you before you posted it?" I guess the word I'm looking for is FLABBERGASTED! God, I love that word.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 14:17 (twenty-two years ago)

It occurred to me, but I decided I'd rather post it and hope I lived in a world where no-one would see something to call me on. This is a complicated computation based on how funny the joke is, how well I know the audience, how well I'm known, and about a hundred other things, and I'm beginning to suspect I got it wrong. Sorry.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 14:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I think I made a bigger deal out this than I actually felt.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 15:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm amazed we got any progress at all without the mysterious ILX Force hurtling us in opposite directions to declare blood-feud.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 15:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I am frightened because my first impulse was to use Google to look up what the Klingon word for "blood feud" is.

("blood war" = "'lw ghob": I am sad but not as sad as some)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 15:35 (twenty-two years ago)

(Actually I'm wrong, it's "'lw noH" OH GOD SOMEONE STOP ME)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 15:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought I was bad, gollum gollum.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 15:54 (twenty-two years ago)

YOU ARE BAD YOU LOST THE PRECIOUS

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 16:12 (twenty-two years ago)

You have to admit the guy in those photos is wearing some awesome awesome pants.

Who IS that weirdo, anyway?

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 16:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Context is everything, Michael-san.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 16:14 (twenty-two years ago)

One of my junior high best friends, right, he was in this play where he was a wolf, it was Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe maybe? Anyway he was a Scottish wolf and he'd wear the bottom half of the costume as pants all the time. They looked exactly like that, but grey. It was pretty damn cool.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 16:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Who IS that weirdo, anyway?

words fail me.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 16:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh my GOD! *THAT'S* Adam Ant?!?!

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 16:24 (twenty-two years ago)

No, seriously, while I had a good laff at the story I hadn't clicked on any of the links. I figured those pics weren't connected to main story because the guy looked pretty young.

Knowing the truth makes everything so much more...er, I dunno.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 16:25 (twenty-two years ago)

can't...stop...staring...at...photos....

haha wtf happened to Adam, seriously now.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 16:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought it might be the guy from 3rd Bass.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 16:31 (twenty-two years ago)

MC Serch was never a dandy highwayman anyone was ever scared to mention.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 16:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex has made me sad again.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 16:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Put some wax on the trax and slide on onta here
hane hane hane hane hane

hatchets in the corner ears to the ground
improve to the groove get down to the sound
buttons and bows and bleu blanc rouge
all things lively must be used
liberte, egalite, au jour d'hui c'est tres tres tres
voici l'opportunite nous Incroyables

I got the moves they got the grooves
summoned the Gods and they all approved
bad vibes akimbo on the shelf
bit of a rap thing going for myself
this gold on the teeth's no sense at all
it only matters when it's on the wall

I'm standing here with my four men
let's start that rapping thing again:

Marco, Merrick, Terry Lee, Gary Tibbs and yours truly
in the naughty North and in the sexy South
we're all singing I have the mouth
in the naughty North and in the sexy South
we're all singing I have the mouth
I have the mouth

So tired of anarchists looking at me
don't need their credibility
"destroy," they say, "defy! condemn!"
as long as you don't destroy them
with twenty years of drugs and drink
I thought the time had come to think
about standing up and saying that
It's tragedy and such old hat

I'm standing here with my four men
let's start that rapping thing again:

(I got) Marco, Merrick, Terry Lee, Gary Tibbs and yours truly
in the naughty North and in the sexy South
we're all singing I have the mouth
in the naughty North and in the sexy South
we're all singing I have the mouth
I have the mouth

these happy feet are all we need
summoned the Gods and they all agreed
these feet won't stop they're in such a hurry
I knock it on the head and I go for a curry
staying sober can be neat
get drunk on these here happy feet
keep on trying to pin me down
"why a title for your sound?"
I'm standing here with my four men
let's do this rapping thing again:

I got Marco, Merrick, Terry Lee, Gary Tibbs and yours truly
in the naughty North and in the sexy South
we're all singing I have the mouth...

and I have the mouth
and you have the mouth
and they got the mouth

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 16:44 (twenty-two years ago)

ALLY I KISS YOU MUCHLY

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 16:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Where's Momus to defend this transgression?

David. (Cozen), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 16:57 (twenty-two years ago)

these happy feet are all we need
summoned the Gods and they all agreed

Now that's a lyric.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 17:03 (twenty-two years ago)

That whole verse is fantastic.

these feet won't stop they're in such a hurry
I knock it on the head and I go for a curry

CLASSIC.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 17:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I like how staying sober can be "neat", it's like Nancy Reagan wrote the Ant Rap.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 17:10 (twenty-two years ago)

antrap. oh antrap. thank you ally.

jl (Jon L), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 17:19 (twenty-two years ago)

haha wtf happened to Adam, seriously now.

Unfortunately, Adam's suffered from depression all his life and a combination of various factors (including at least two serious stalking incidents - he was the one being stalked) has led to some kind of breakdown. He was arrested a few years back for waving a starting pistol in a bar and chucking something thru the pub's window. A guy I know who works at Camden Market says some days he's better than others - depending on what medication he's on.

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 11 September 2003 13:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Stunned...just stunned. The video was toooooo much. Always liked Ant Music, I really like gorillas too. MAybe this appears totally weird, ok, it is weird, but it is weird in a really nice way. This is a good thing and I'm glad it is good news for Adam. Think about the usual "20 years down the line" news about older pop stars, and it is stunningly funny. 5 stars

Brandon Welch (Brandon Welch), Friday, 12 September 2003 05:47 (twenty-two years ago)

just noticed this

needless to say, best thread evah (no small thanx to ally)

Due to illness, Adam Ant unfortunately did not attend the scheduled Run for the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund. However, Dian Fossey's organization has been kind enough to inform adam-ant.net of exclusive studio footage of Adam and Boz recording Save the Gorilla, the recorded remake of Stand and Deliver (with altered lyrics.) Watch the video here on DianFossey.org and select Adam Ant - Save the Gorilla at the top to view the footage.

But as a bonus heres the new video. Studio footage of the making of the song with Boz Boorer.

omg i just discovered this, so amazing. My question is: is it possible to go the other direction on this kind of thing? Like, what if Peter Gabriel repudiated saving the apes and re-recorded "Shock the Monkey" as a statement of this direction? What would it be called?

I mean, I guess it could still be "Shock the Monkey," only he would really mean for you to.

I remember Adam Ant appearing on some Motown anniversary special ca. 1983 and singing "Where Did Our Love Go." This was no weirder than that.

I just looked it up. Wow, it was the Motown 25th Anniversary special. What was he doing on that?

I know Marco put the stop on this. I didn't know it had actually been 'aired' already.
