is Primal Scream's "Dirty Hits" the most worthless best-of ever?

this tracklisting appalls me

http://www.nme.com/news/106089.htm

hello? none of your best songs are even on it, fuckheads

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 8 September 2003 22:32 (twenty-two years ago)

oh sure they are, i suppose you want 'Gentle Tuesday' or something? i agree it's a stupid idea for them though. I know some diehard Scream fans who are a bit annoyed about it (in the same way some were irked by the Manics' 'Forever Delayed' perhaps) but it might attract some younger listeners who weren't even born when 'I'm Losing More Than I'll Ever Have' came out.

The Pulp best of did really badly didn't it? I don't expect this to sell that well.

stevem (blueski), Monday, 8 September 2003 22:37 (twenty-two years ago)

i mean jeez, at least put "ivy ivy ivy" on it

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 8 September 2003 22:39 (twenty-two years ago)

remember it's a Greatest Hits, not a Best Of! then again...

'Loaded'
'Movin' On Up'
'Come Together'
'Higher Than The Sun'
'Rocks'
'Jailbird'
'(I'm Gonna) Cry Myself Blind'
'Burning Wheel'
'Kowalski'
'Long Life'
'Swastika Eyes 7"
'Kill All Hippies'
'Accelerator'
'Shoot Speed Kill Light'
'Miss Lucifer'
'Deep Hit Of The Morning Sun'
'Some Velvet Morning' (new Kevin Shields/ Jagz Kooner version)
'Autobahn 66'

no 'Don't Fight It, Feel It'! shockah! also surprised 'Star' was omitted (it was a single and not that bad - quite enjoyable in a cheesy way) and no 'If They Move Kill 'Em' which was a single albeit limited edition i think.

stevem (blueski), Monday, 8 September 2003 22:39 (twenty-two years ago)

the presence of "hits" in the title is hilarious. you could probably buy all the albums at nice price for what they're selling the best-of for anyway

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 8 September 2003 22:40 (twenty-two years ago)

it contains at least 13 top 40 singles so 'hits' is pretty accurate in that respect

stevem (blueski), Monday, 8 September 2003 22:43 (twenty-two years ago)

It contains all their best tracks to my mind - the first four. the thought of a chemical brothers remix of a late primal scream track really does appall me though.

jed (jed_e_3), Monday, 8 September 2003 22:49 (twenty-two years ago)

why do they hate their early stuff so much? it might be twee and jangly and badly recorded but the TUNES man

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 8 September 2003 22:50 (twenty-two years ago)

having said that - velocity girl would have been a nice inclusion.

jed (jed_e_3), Monday, 8 September 2003 22:50 (twenty-two years ago)

every Chemical Brothers remix of the Scream has been brilliant

stevem (blueski), Monday, 8 September 2003 22:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Where the fuck is "All Fall Down"???

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Monday, 8 September 2003 23:04 (twenty-two years ago)

on Creation Soup volume 2

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 8 September 2003 23:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I still have a fondness for the 2nd album. I prefer it to 'Give Out But Don't Give Up' (which i still like lots)
Can't understand why they ignore the 1st album when theres some great tunes on it, especially as they insist on doing the same tired old covers in their set every tour. Dropping 'Loaded' for 'kick out the jams' is not on.
1st album has 3 great songs on it and its a shame none are included. They did play 'Imperial' a few tours back when they toured 'Vanishing Point' so i do wonder who actually chose the tracklisting?

Kevin Gillespie, Monday, 8 September 2003 23:11 (twenty-two years ago)

again, the first album is a complete obscurity with no hits - it's a HITS compilation not a BEST OF...though that doesn't explain why 'Long Life' and 'Deep Hit Of The Morning Sun' appear (i think they're both effing great tracks tho)

stevem (blueski), Monday, 8 September 2003 23:16 (twenty-two years ago)

THE REAL PRIZZIE SCRIZZIE GRIZZIE HIZZIE IN THIS HIZZIE BIZZIE

1. "All Fall Down"
2. "Velocity Girl"
3. "Imperial"
4. "Gentle Tuesday"
5. "Ivy Ivy Ivy"
6. "Gimme Gimme Teenage Head" (for the title alone)
7. "I'm Losing More Than I'll Ever Have"
8. "Loaded"
9. "Movin' On Up"
10. "Come Together" (the one with the Jesse Jackson sample)
11. "Higher Than the Sun"
12. "Rocks"
13. "Kowalski"
14. "Burning Wheel"
15. "The Big Man and the Scream Team Meet the Barmy Army Uptown"
16. "Kill All Hippies"
17. "Accelerator"
18. "Exterminator"
19. "Swastika Eyes" (the one that's not the Chemical Brothers remix)
20. "Miss Lucifer"
21. "Some Velvet Morning"

What are some good Scream remixes? There's got to be some good ones out there.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Monday, 8 September 2003 23:27 (twenty-two years ago)

What are some good Scream remixes? There's got to be some good ones out there.

Jailbird (Chemical Brothers mix)
Burning Wheel (Chemical brothers mix)
I'm 5 Years Ahead Of My Time (produced by Chemical Brothers)
Swastika Eyes (Chemical Brothers mix)

there is a remix CD coming out with the hits comp of course

stevem (blueski), Monday, 8 September 2003 23:34 (twenty-two years ago)

oh and Terry Farley's mix of 'Loaded'

stevem (blueski), Monday, 8 September 2003 23:34 (twenty-two years ago)

and the 'American Spring' mix of 'Higher Than The Sun' tho like the Orb mixes it's just an extension

stevem (blueski), Monday, 8 September 2003 23:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Mr Snrub is OTM except it needs Jailbird.
But thats a great comp. Fucking fantastic actually!

Raymondo, Monday, 8 September 2003 23:37 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah the Snrub version is way better

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 8 September 2003 23:40 (twenty-two years ago)

the kevin shields mix of if they move kill 'em is one of the best things i've ever heard

robin (robin), Monday, 8 September 2003 23:42 (twenty-two years ago)

"Movin' on Up" and "Come Together" have to be the worst shit they've ever released, why the fuck were they even singles... god, they're so fucking bad that I have to rip my own face off to stop the pain

King Kobra (King Kobra), Monday, 8 September 2003 23:43 (twenty-two years ago)

i really hated the single version of 'Come Together' ("kiiiisss meeee"), but the album version's far from shit

stevem (blueski), Monday, 8 September 2003 23:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Wait a minute. When you're talking about the Kevin Shields mix of "If They Move Kill 'Em," are you just talking about "MBV Arkestra (If They Move Kill 'Em," (the ninth song on XTRMNTR) or is this another song entirely? I mean, I always thought the "MBV" in the song title stood for "My Bloody Valentine," and, you know, Kevin Shields is the guy in My Bloody Valentine.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 00:33 (twenty-two years ago)

It's another track on the "If They Move Kill 'em' single. Brilliant it is, too, tho Shield' best remix work IMHO is his version of Mogwai's fear Satan. Evil!

Bill E (bill_e), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 02:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Nah, the Ltd ed Kevin Shields remix of 'If They Move' (released Feb '98) is the same as the Arkestra thing on 'Extrmntr', just with a different name. The 45 had a good extended versh of 'If They Move' (with Peckinpah samples) and two rotten Mary Chain covers and some remedial rebel-rock posing (dedicated to Rosa Luxembourg) chucked in free.

Henry K M (Enrique), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 07:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I've never heard Echo Dek. Are there any greatest hits-worthy songs on that one???

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 11:47 (twenty-two years ago)

'greatest hits-worthy songs'? i don't thik so. but Echo Dek overall is quite a cool album.

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 11:56 (twenty-two years ago)

(thik"="think)

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 11:58 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah 'i'm losing more...' and 'ivy' and 'velocity girl' at the least i'd have thought, but fck em who cares ?

name one other band who have had 2 b.sides
inspire 2 band names .
well i dont think u can, cause there isn't one.

oh i mean 'spirea x' and 'velocity girl' obv

piscesboy, Tuesday, 9 September 2003 12:21 (twenty-two years ago)

spirea x doesn't entirely count tho' because the band was fronted by the guy who wrote the song of the same title

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 12:32 (twenty-two years ago)

You want the American Spring mix of Higher than the sun.

Jim Eaton-Terry (Jim E-T), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 14:09 (twenty-two years ago)

i love jim beattie but both of those bands stunk, so there is no pride to be had.

keith (keithmcl), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 01:11 (twenty-two years ago)

you're out of your mind

the spirea x album has dated very well, i think it actually sounds better now than it did when it was released

the surface noise (electricsound), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 01:14 (twenty-two years ago)

The tracklisting isn't great, but his appals me more:

'He added: "Rock'n'roll is our religion...Rock'n'roll is our dream weapon...The Scream keep rockin'."'

Dude?

bham, Wednesday, 10 September 2003 07:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Here's my 77 minute portable Primal Scream:

Ivy Ivy Ivy
Loaded
Come Together (single version)
Slip Inside This House
Higher Than the Sun
Movin' On Up
Come Together (album version)
Rocks
Kowalski

Kill All Hippies
Shoot Speed Kill Light
Miss Lucifer
Some Velvet Morning

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 07:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Great comp, Spencer! Thanks. I've done a similar thing for Massive Attack single remixes and it's fantastic TISSM.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 08:12 (twenty-two years ago)

this: 'Some Velvet Morning' (new Kevin Shields/ Jagz Kooner version)
is very exciting. My two favorite rock producers redo an already terrific track.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 15 September 2003 20:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Where is Thought? Where is The Orchard?

(nerdy flag)

Jens (brighter), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 18:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I think they picked the wrong tracks from the mighty Vanishing Point (my fave release by them by far). Where is "Star" and "Stuka"? I know "Long Life" was on the Trainspotting soundtrack, but it doesn't make it one of their best. Also I think "Slip Inside This House" should have been on this.

dog latin (dog latin), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 20:29 (twenty-two years ago)

This band had 13 top 40 singles? Were they all in the UK?

sundar subramanian (sundar), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 02:30 (twenty-two years ago)

the remix disc interests me muchly. i agree with whoever said all the chembros remixes are great.. the 3 official remixes of miss lucifer were all really rad and have been rocking me of late..

kerry getz (kgetz), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 02:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Sigh. Not useless. But dangerous, yeah. I had it on the walkman the other day, yeah man, Testifyin' Bobby G keepin' it real and don't harsh my buzz, higher than the sun, we wanna be free to wander around and not be hassled by the WHITE VAN MAN tryin' to run me down, what do you mean, I was wandering erratically across Kings Cross Rd, maaaaan, I'm free, knowhaddamean?

Erm, yeah. Who cares. I love it.

kate (kate), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 11:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Search 'Live in Japan' - instead of 'Dirty Hits' - mixed by Kevin Shields - it hurts the brain.

st tremaine, Wednesday, 17 September 2003 11:33 (twenty-two years ago)

ooooh, I forgot how much I loved that Hypnotone remix of "Come Together"!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 20:57 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...
It would be better, I think, if this album were called 'Gaffer Tape'.

I have learned to love the remix disc. Well, quite like the remix disc. It works well as background music for handicrafts or cookery.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Monday, 8 November 2004 10:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I need to dig this out again. I've lost it in my many moves. Sigh.

I found the framed picture of Bobby G, (I keep it above my mixing board) but lost the albums. Typical.
