I'm thinking of stuff in the vein of, let's say, "El Paso" by Marty Robbins, or "Carmelita" by Warren Zevon... Stuff that'll make me think of Mexico or the American Southwest, and good to drink a beer to. Heh heh. Gimme some suggestions!

King Kobra (King Kobra), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 02:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Find yerself some Calexico, Friends of Dean Martinez, or maybe Cracker's "Bicycle Spaniard" from The Golden Age.

ham on rye (ham on rye), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 02:09 (twenty-two years ago)

"Rye Whiskey" by Tex Ritter might be perfect for that mix.
"Hungover Together Again" by Supersuckers is a good country song to drink along to.

Moss Feaster (Moss Feaster), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 03:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Elvis Costello: "A Good Year For The Roses"
The Eagles: "Desperado"
Squeeze: "Labelled With Love"

Plus anything that Gram Parsons was ever involved in.

Country Songs to Get Blasted To

Ray Wylie Hubbard - "Screw You, We're From Texas"
if you want a Johnny Cash song to drink beer to it's gotta be "Sunday Morning Coming Down"
Jerry Lee Lewis - "You're All Too Ugly Tonight"/"A Damn Good Country Song"
anything by Wayne "The Train" Hancock
Willie Nelson - "I Gotta Get Drunk"

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 14:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 17:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Some non-American artists genre-hopping into country:

'Don't Call Me Gone' - The Go-Betweens
'Country' - Gorky's Zygotic Mynci
'Country Dreamer' - Paul McCartney

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 17:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Doug FUCKING Sahm, kids/ "Nuevo Larado", "Is Anybody Going To San Antone?", "At The Crossroads", "Texas Me" etc

Charles McCain (Charles McCain), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 17:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Furnace Room Lullaby

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 18:36 (twenty-two years ago)

give it some class:

the lazy cowgirls - the wayward wind
the lazy cowgirls - heartache
the geraldine fibbers - the grand tour

dan (dan), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 21:41 (twenty-two years ago)

"Are You Drinking With Me, Jesus?" - Mojo Nixon & The Toadliquors

On the other hand, under no circumstances whatsoever do you want the original Eagles version of "Desperado" on your CDR. Go for either the Johnny Cash or Langley Schools Music Project takes on this song instead. Please.

Ben Dot, Tuesday, 9 September 2003 22:29 (twenty-two years ago)

"Better Be Home Soon" by Crowded House could almost be counted as a country song, and that is one really brilliant piece of music.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 23:09 (twenty-two years ago)

"Good To Drink a Beer To">:

"The Drunk Driver" by Grandpa Joe, where he sadly runs over his kids at the end while of course, driving drunk. (Take that George Jones).

Brian Turner (btwfmu), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 00:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Uncle Tupelo - "Give Back The Key To My Heart"
Rolling Stones - "Country Honk"
Old 97's - "W-I-F-E," "Stoned"
Mike Ness - "Don't Think Twice"
Lucinda Williams - "Concrete and Barbed Wire," "Drunken Angel"
Knife in the Water - "Young Blood in the River," "Sundown, Sundown"
Kasey Chambers - "Barricades and Brickwalls," "A Little Bit Lonesome"
Cowboy Junkies - "Walking After Midnight"
Baptist Generals - "Alcohol (Turn and Fall)," "Going Back Song"

Texas Tornados, "Who Were You Thinkin' Of?"

Sonny A. (Keiko), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 01:23 (twenty-two years ago)

There aren't a lot of women who sound "southwestern" to me. Dolly Parton, Tammy Wynette, et al. are much more Deep South-ish to me.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 01:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Songs: Ohia, "The Old Black Hen" (w/ Lawrence Peters)
Fountains of Wayne, "Hung Up On You"

Simon H., Wednesday, 10 September 2003 01:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Anything by Giant Sand

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 14:02 (twenty-two years ago)

For the southwest theme, an absolute MUST is "Gallo DeCielo" by Ian Tyson.

peepee (peepee), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 15:59 (twenty-two years ago)

There's also this cut off of Paula Frazer's (of Tarnation) solo CD Indoor Universe, "That You Know", which does the spaghetti western thing nicely.

ham on rye (ham on rye), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 17:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Did King Kobra ever check out that Joe Ely cd I recommended on his last thread along these lines?

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 17:03 (twenty-two years ago)

new partner-palace
girl from the north country-bob dylan and johnny cash

robin (robin), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 17:08 (twenty-two years ago)

why have yuo all chosen indie records yet again?

this thread reminds me of the hip hop threads and everyone comes up with like dj shadow or something, or dance threads and everyone is all chemical brothers. sometimes i think ilm sees words like country or hip hop or dance and think that what it really says is indie:(

gareth (gareth), Thursday, 11 September 2003 07:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it's the south west/Mexico thing, gareth - most (real) country I love wouldn't really fit into that category. As milo says, it's more deep south than south west.

If you want a Mexican feel then you obviously need some Los Lobos. "One time one night" or "Will the wolf survive?".

James Ball (James Ball), Thursday, 11 September 2003 09:18 (twenty-two years ago)

but milo must know
that Tejas is where it's at
country-wise these days

Charlie Robison
Dixie Chicks, Robert Earl Keen--
these are the LEADERS

Haikunym (Haikunym), Thursday, 11 September 2003 13:17 (twenty-two years ago)
