Has anyone else heard the Stellastarr* album?

I got it a few weeks ago, hated it at first but its really grown on me, but for some reason the words 'Sultans of Ping F.C.' keep coming into my head.........

Same here. Why do things like that happen?

Andrew Frye (paul cox), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 12:07 (twenty-two years ago)

half-arsed wedding present rip off. mostly harmless.

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 12:27 (twenty-two years ago)

If you didn't already know what they sounded like, you'd be inclined to think "Ace of Base" after seeing this:

Man, that photo: Not what I was expecting at all -- it looks like a publicity still from a new WB sitcom. That said, I like the CD a lot, too, even if they are cribbing a bit heavily from Pixies and Gedge...

For all of you information stellastarr* is a very very talented band. And if you don't like it screw you!!!!

we have all been told.

anycase, pretty pleasant, but not the kind of thing i ever remember to listen to.

ashamed (andrew s), Sunday, 15 February 2004 21:08 (twenty-one years ago)

what the fuck is with the name? It gets on my nerves in so many ways.

Elliot (Elliot), Sunday, 15 February 2004 21:12 (twenty-one years ago)

*wallpaper, innit?!

___ (___), Sunday, 15 February 2004 21:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I also hated it at first and I continue to dislike them to this day! The Wedding Present thing never occured to me though, I remember them being described on the press sheet as like Cure/Pixies/Talking Heads sort of made me dislike them to begin with for some reason. I remember the music being very indistinct and the guy's voice bothersome. That and the name of their CD is called "Advance Music" ug. So they have awful problems with names these guys and just cause they are on RCA or whatever they get 1000 the publicity as any number of bands who are equally mediocre.

christhamrin (christhamrin), Sunday, 15 February 2004 21:33 (twenty-one years ago)

They're gawdawful. No two ways around it.

Francis Watlington (Francis Watlington), Sunday, 15 February 2004 21:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think I've ever hated an idea of a band as much as I hate the idea behind Stellastarr (And I simply refuse to put the asterisk at the end).

David Allen (David Allen), Sunday, 15 February 2004 22:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Agreed.

christhamrin (christhamrin), Monday, 16 February 2004 00:09 (twenty-one years ago)

My friend gave me their CD for some reason, she thought I would like it, I have no idea why. I'm scared to listen to it, the liner note photos made me intensely skeptical of their quality. And the printed lyrics are BAD. As in dreadful.

one year passes...
why are all the maximo park's and such likes are getting the hip vote when Stellastarr* were rather lovely and FAILED.

elwisty (elwisty), Thursday, 19 May 2005 21:03 (twenty years ago)

Stellastarr*: Are you supposed to say it "Stellastarr-star"? Or is there some footnote I'm supposed to read somewhere? Say, on the back page of the liner notes of the last album of their career (ie - in the future)? Like:

*We were just kidding.

giboyeux (skowly), Thursday, 19 May 2005 21:26 (twenty years ago)

Holy shit what a godawful band.

cdwill, Thursday, 19 May 2005 23:23 (twenty years ago)

yes...they are rather poopy

Aerodynamic (Aerodynamic), Friday, 20 May 2005 02:10 (twenty years ago)

I got an advance promo of this for $1.95 and I still feel ripped off! Might have played it only once and put it away forever.

BeeOK (boo radley), Friday, 20 May 2005 05:17 (twenty years ago)

I don't think it's terrible as far as MOR, fake-indie records go. I haven't listened to it for a long, long time (promo) but I seem to recall "My Coco" being a good song.

Eric Seguy, Friday, 20 May 2005 09:57 (twenty years ago)

fake-indie?

elwisty (elwisty), Friday, 20 May 2005 10:27 (twenty years ago)

For those who care and from the Stellastar's newsletter:

We are pleased to announce that we have just finished recording our second album which will come out in the US this August on RCA. We will be touring again in September. Stay tuned for the UK release date and touring plans coming soon.

For those of you in NYC, we will be debuting our new songs under the name The Ligers this Friday (5/20) at The Bowery Ballroom. It is a party called NY2LON including The Hong Kong, The Ordinary Boys and Amusement Parks on Fire.

We will be re-launching http://www.stellastarr.com on July 1st. Check out the messageboard over the next couple weeks for show updates, studio footage, and audio streams from our new album.

Looking forward to seeing everyone again...

Okay, the new album is 90% complete and total ass, to the point that I'm mad at myself for listening to it. BUT "Tokyo Sky" is actually a pretty damn good song.

My mind is blown that this is still a band

I got mine the same exact way (and for roughly the same price). I probably trashed it last time I moved.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 27 July 2009 21:52 (sixteen years ago)

they had a really annoying song on a ps2 baseball game about 7-8 years ago.

(*゚ー゚)θ L(。・_・) °~ヾ(・ε・ *) (Steve Shasta), Monday, 27 July 2009 21:53 (sixteen years ago)

If you hate the dude's voice, which is very understandable, then 100% of these songs are very annoying. Still, every now and then they latch onto something that I really like. Guitars kind of shimmering around over some thick bass lines. I don't know, not for everyone. And that voice is a huge hurdle to overcome.

3 mods 1 banhammer (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 27 July 2009 21:55 (sixteen years ago)

Sometimes "My Coco" will become lodged in my head for an entire afternoon, which is not very nice.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 27 July 2009 21:57 (sixteen years ago)

two years pass...

ha I was just wondering if anyone else out there liked "My Coco"

Victory Chainsaw! (DJP), Tuesday, 12 June 2012 20:23 (thirteen years ago)

Loved their second album. Third was crap. I guess they're done now?
