What will be the next "Are You Ready For Love?"

...in other words, the next obscure flop single/album track/B-side to be rescued from the craters of history, polished up to cultdom status and ultimately sent to number one?

If we go by the Portobello Road law of expansion, then, as I mentioned on CoM, Norman Jay was spinning the Elton disc at the Notting Hill Carnival as far back as the mid-'80s, and getting sneered at by everyone (but not by us) for doing so. So my next guess would be "Mathar" by the Dave Pike Set, seeing as in the mid-'90s you couldn't walk the length of Port/b Rd without hearing said track at least three times on your journey.

Something by Phil Collins perhaps? Easy Lover?

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 10:07 (twenty-two years ago)

"Mathar" is the sort of indian vibes-y one that was doing the rounds in the wake of Kula Shaker yes? (no reflection on the quality of either)

Will the Rugby World Cup be a good enough deal for the "new old Elton" to come out of its coverage?

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 10:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know, Easy Lover actually was a hit, wasn't it?

The full-length Mind Power by James Brown would be a great 'resurrected for the first time' hit single.

M Carty (mj_c), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 10:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Reply to Tom re. "Mathar": yes, that's the one. The other track we used to keep hearing in stalls at Camden Market round about the same time was "Indian Rope Man" by Julie Driscoll/Brian Auger (which was almost completely ripped off by the Charlatans for "Weirdo").

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 9 September 2003 10:12 (twenty-two years ago)

It will be "Goodnight Tonight" by Wings

harveyw (harveyw), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 11:10 (twenty-two years ago)

As I keep saying, the ELO revival can only be a matter of months away.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 11:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Well Atomic Kitten "revived" "Last Train To London" so that in a way has already happened. I like the idea of "Goodnight Tonight" though - it did go top five on original release, but yes I can see it happening again (btw, that Beatlejuice bootleg of "Blackbird" currently doing the rounds is pretty astonishing; anyone else heard it?).

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 9 September 2003 11:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Didn't the Charlatans have a very early single or EP called Indian Rope or something? This seems like something I dimly remember from a 3-second clip on the Chart Show indie rundown of the time.

M Carty (mj_c), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 11:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Paul Weller played sitar on the 'Indian Vibes' track, as released by Mathar in the mid 90s

'Easy Lover' was a #1 hit in 1985 or whenever

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 11:36 (twenty-two years ago)

i was thinking of Osibisa's 'Sunshine Day' - it has already received the predictable 4/4 treatment but I could see it being a much bigger hit than it was, maybe next Summer

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 11:37 (twenty-two years ago)

In 10 years, "Electric Music and the Summer People" will be resurrected to soundtrack National Lampoons 9/11 Memorial Vacation Pt. 3 or something and will be Beck's biggest hit of his career, years after he's gone drunken recluse on us.

You heard it here first, folks.

Saaaayve the gorilluuuhhs!

Siegbran (eofor), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 14:35 (twenty-two years ago)

God, I hope it's Sailor's Glass of Champagne. Okay, it was a big hit originally - but it can be again!

David Merryweather (DavidM), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 17:19 (twenty-two years ago)

"Indian Rope" was the Charlatans first single, and apparently it sounds very much like "I'm A Man" by The Spencer Davis Group.

Neil FC, Tuesday, 9 September 2003 19:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmm, I thought Indian rope sounds like "I shot the sheriff" by Bob Marley - at least the end of the verse bit. There is a House of Love track, "You don't understand" that rips off "I'm a man".

As for the actual question, I hope there is another, I just bought the Elton single and love it, especially the extended 8 minute version.

Keith Watson (kmw), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 20:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Elton's 'Mama Can't Buy Your Love'

Paul R (paul R), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 05:48 (twenty-two years ago)

"Asbestos Lead Asbestos" - World Domination Enterprises.

Well, I can dream.

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 09:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I suspect you will have to dream! ;-)

Tell you what I would like to see out again and charting - "Shoot The Pump" by J Walter Negro & the Loose Jointz (originally out on Island 12-inch, 1981). The great lost avant funk/pop track or what? Does anyone else remember it?

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 10 September 2003 09:41 (twenty-two years ago)

It will be "Goodnight Tonight" by Wings

"Coming Up", I'd agree on, as well as heartily encouraging. "Train In Vain", perhaps?

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 10:05 (twenty-two years ago)

'Goodnight Tonight',thanks Harvey for reminding me of this great track.I'll have to try & locate my copy.

I'll be posting and big upping "Shoot the Pump" on tonight's Hut; I'm getting in contact with one of the bandmembers for a quick talk first.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Thursday, 13 January 2005 03:19 (twenty years ago)

Wow. Great question. "You Brought the Sunshine" by the Clark Sisters? That NYC Peech Boys record? A remix of D Train's "You're the One for Me"?

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Thursday, 13 January 2005 10:57 (twenty years ago)

"One Night" by Elvis. Number one despite having sold no copies in record shops.

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 13 January 2005 11:10 (twenty years ago)

i can see all the kids grooving to that one in the clubs saturday night!

God, I hope it's Sailor's Glass of Champagne. Okay, it was a big hit originally - but it can be again!

if the rest of the british populace reacts like i just did on hearing it used on the new M&S commercial - "HOLY FUCK, WHAT IS THAT SONG? I MUST HAVE IT!" - then this might just happen.

it's at times like this i love the internet. 30 seconds from hearing a song to hitting google, finding out what it is and downloading it.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Monday, 18 September 2006 22:14 (nineteen years ago)

The song is "Virginia Plain" though, innit?

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 14:24 (nineteen years ago)

the song on the advert is "glass of champagne". but yes, "glass of champagne" is basically "virginia plain". and indeed i thought it was when i first heard it.
