"Dub" versions of hip hop tunes

I've been increasingly impressed with the music on a lot of the hip-hop I've been hearing (not much granted, and I'm late to the party as well) so is there any instrumental hip-hop done ina dub style?

or at least long versions with vocals that have an emphasis on the music

There's a really good beastie boys dub version of Pass the Mic called Dub The Mic.

Five Man Army by Massive Attack also kind of qualifies.

Eric B and Rakim - Paid in Full (Coldcut Mix) fits in well here

Roots Manuva's Dub Come Save Me

recently 'screwing' has come back into fashion, whole new versions of clipse lord willin and the david banner lp have turned up

instrumentals were rarely just that in the 80s before looping really came into effect. tho sometimes like with mantronix (or rather maybe the latin rascals) this rarely added up to little more than breathtaking virtuoso permutations on a theme

Doesn't every rap single in the 80s have a dub version on the bside?

no

I feel criminally ignorant on this question, but here goes. Remixes or alternate versions are on every 12-inch. But as far as actual Jamaican techniques of echo and dropping out the vocal, etc., it's pretty rare.

Boogie Down Productions' "Stop the Violence," A Tribe Called Quest's "Find A Way," and Atmosphere's "Free or Dead" all incorporate aspects of dub (and in at least one case a sample of dub) into the original song. But none of the instrumental versions I've heard really approach the recording in a "dub" way. DJ Shadow, the illbient DJs, the drum-n-bass ones do. But is that hip hop? Maybe.

So far as I know, the only other people to record funk or disco beats in a consciously dub way were the Clash (the singular "This Is Radio Clash"), Public Image Ltd. (the singular Metal Box) and Bill Laswell's Material (I'm only remembering from other people's records). But from the looks of things, you could throw the whole genre on one CD and have room to spare...

thanks for the answers

I checked out Eric B and Rakim, looks like their two cd set 'platinum' has what I'm looking for unfortunately it's like 30 dollars so I went looking for Roots Manuva and it's a much more reasonable 12 bucks.

Pete, yeah I was wondering if the concept was out there somewhere and I've been missing out. When I hear hip-hop on the radio, even if I like the rapping, I keep saying 'that's a good beat, I wish they'd run with it and take it some place' (if that makes any sense).

christ i hate instrumental hiphop fiends!! but ok if you check for some scratch tapes youll find lots of extended shit where djs 'run' with the beat and 'take it some place', like ten minute suites where theyre just flippin the instrumental of some song, cuttin up the drums, scratching and fading and all that, i hardly ever prefer it to the o.g. three minute song since i actually like rap, but this may be what you want

trife (simon_tr), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 01:15 (twenty-two years ago)

and i guarantee almost any scratch tape will be better than a useless fuckin dub version of a roots manuva cd

trife (simon_tr), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 01:16 (twenty-two years ago)

the thing is pete is that, manuva aside, the full on dub style u seek filtered through disco and electro first rather than mapping it from reggae straight to hiphop. i guess one must try and nail the line between a dubstyle and just fucking shit up

slightly not very relevant: monica's lp's got a cover of strafe's 'set it off'! it's another bloody missy thing tho

Chip Morningstar (bob), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 08:19 (twenty-two years ago)

anyway i think manuva is really a oneoff arcadian throwback sort rather than a rap guy

Chip Morningstar (bob), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 08:23 (twenty-two years ago)

jesus i hate o.g. three minute song heads!! trife, thanks for the response :)

I have no idea what "oneoff arcadian throwback" means
