Disowned

Has a track ever disappeared from a major* artist's history like The Who's 'Dogs'. It got to number 25 in June 1968 (higher than Magic Bus, Summertime Blues and Long Live Rock and only a 3 or 4 places lower than Relay or 5:15)yet hasn't been featured on any of the many compilations they've put out since then- Meaty Beaty, Story Of The Who, and the many more recent ones. I only have it on the box-set. I rather like it, except for Daltrey's cod-cockney verses, but that's beside the point...

...what other tracks have similarly disappeared? Or even albums?

*Major or major-ish artists are of most interest. I'm not really bothered if The Close Lobsters disowned their third single!

"Into The Unknown" to thread.

The first Guided by Voices record was never included in any of the endless box sets and compilations of their material, as far as I know.

David Bowie-The Laughing Gnome. This track of course sank upon it's original release but was a hit when reissued following Bowie's later success.

I think "Dogs" is a great track, even if it doesn't come from the WHO's classic 70's period. It sounds quite a lot like cockney-core period Blur except better which brings me on to them - I've never been a massive Blur fan, but I did like "Bang" and they seemed to disown that, vowing to never put it on a greatest hits which they did stick to.

There are sacks of such (70's) WHO tracks, tons of them on "Odds & Sods".

Keith Watson (kmw), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 20:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Don Van Vliet removed all mention of the albums Unconditionally Guaranteed and Bluejeans & Moonbeams from his resume and recommended to his fans that they return them to the shops and demand a refund.

Also, browsing The Damned's website recently, I saw that the album I'm Alright Jack And The Beanstalk aka Not Of This Earth is identified not under "Studio Albums" but under "Oddities", with the comment "NOT intended for release in this form"

I'm sure there are more but that's all I can think of off hand

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 20:08 (twenty-two years ago)

It doesn't quite meet the description, seeing as it's on the CD reissue of 'Summer Days (and Summer Nights!!!)' (best title ever) but the liner notes to the Beach Boys boxed set mention how the compilers really wanted to put Let Him Run Wild on (and who wouldn't?) but that Brian Wilson inexplicably vetoed it.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 20:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I think that charles manson song is off all the pressings of G n R's spaghetti incident now....

the silly but sublime "johnny carson" appears on the beach boys love you, but nowhere else as far as i know. love you is probably my favorite 70s beach boys album, but it's often ignored.

it's on the next box set!

Dire Straits "twisting by the pool" surely?

the surface noise (electricsound), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 00:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, it is on "Sultans of Swing", the greatest hits album, so I dunno if that counts.

"Misshapes" by Pulp does, though.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 00:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Come on, if you're doing a greatest hits I think it's not that unusual to drop one AA side.

Dr. C's question is about hits that have been repeatedly left off compilations. Maybe if a few Pulp compilations down the line it still never turns up then yeah.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 00:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Primal Scream have apparently disowned everything they released pre Screamadelica

the surface noise (electricsound), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 00:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Does that mean they have to disown the eternally oveplayedrated Loaded then?

Those first 3 Kraftwerk albums are great, but very different from their subsequent cultivated image.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 00:47 (twenty-two years ago)

nar Loaded counts as part of Screamadelica

i love the kraftwerk one with the red witches hat.

The track "Qu'ran" was left off of the CD version of "My Life in the Bush of Ghosts" due to (I think) objections from Islamic groups.

alex chilton denies ever writing or recording "tennis bum" (a demo available on a couple bootlegs). it's a great song in the sense that i'm probably the only person in the world who loves it.

In an interview once Billy Joel referred to all his songs as his "children" and that "My Life" was considered the bad seed of the family. (the Bosom Buddies theme)
Thus, he disownd it.

In the liner notes for the box set which collects all of his other albums, David Thomas says the following about his 1983 album "Winter Comes Home":

BTW WINTER COMES HOME does not exist. According to the Authorized View, it never did exist and, so, it never will exist. Those who claim to own copies are troublemakers. Report them to the Grocery Police.

(If you're not afraid of vinyl or the Grocery Police it's for sale at http://www.rermegacorp.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=Redtlp&Category_Code=SONG.)

Wub-Fur Internet Radio (wubfur), Thursday, 11 May 2006 04:08 (nineteen years ago)

The Beta Band disowned their self-titled album. Apparently they thought it was poorly produced? Couldn't believe some of the comments they made about the poor thing. I think it's their best by a distance.

Ryan Pitchfork (Ryan Pitchfork), Thursday, 11 May 2006 05:15 (nineteen years ago)

Nitzer Ebb's first pre-album singles were left out of print and the comp. that has it, So Bright So Strong is worth lots... more curiosities than neccesity, although the title song is cool, kinda poppy. It has warsaw ghetto on it... first album That Total Age also had "warsaw Ghetto" deleted because of controversy. Shame, it butchers the album flow and it was probably the best song.

-rainbow bum- (-rainbow bum-), Thursday, 11 May 2006 05:36 (nineteen years ago)

I wonder what the suppressed old white zombie stuff sounds like.

-rainbow bum- (-rainbow bum-), Thursday, 11 May 2006 05:37 (nineteen years ago)

That Beta Band album was the free CD I got when I subscribed to Magnet(I know, I know) back in the day. I thought it was pretty good but I still traded it at some point. My stepbrother's entire comment on the record: "They sound like a bunch of dorks."

AaronHz (AaronHz), Thursday, 11 May 2006 07:06 (nineteen years ago)

If it hadn't been for the other thread (see trackback above), I'd have thought this was a thread about a band called "Disowned".

"The way you are" Tears for Fears
"Poplife" Blur

Oh, and "Never Clever" which would have been the follow up, but got binned when "Poplife" 'failed'. (It's on Food 100 compilation)

Yeah, the best example would be those two Captain Beefheart albums.

In other news, I just bought the "Yellow Brick Road" single. £3. Now that's Magic (band).

Looks like this.

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 11 May 2006 07:28 (nineteen years ago)

"The Way You Are" turns up as a bonus track on the new 2CD "Deluxe" reissue of Songs From The Big Chair.

"Poplife" does appear on the US version of Modern Life Is Rubbish which you can get for about £14.99 in HMV.

On Robbie Williams' greatest hits album his covers of "Freedom" and "Somethin' Stupid" are conspicuously absent. Not that I'm complaining.

None of the songs from Who's That Girl? has ever appeared on a Madonna greatest hits compilation (copyright?).

And (again presumably down to copyright reasons) "Down Deep Inside" has never turned up on any Donna Summer compilation. The only place you could find it on CD was on John Barry's Lounge Lizards compilation, and I'm not sure if that's still on catalogue.

Hideous Lump (Hideous Lump), Sunday, 3 September 2006 04:49 (nineteen years ago)

lies wouldn't really be much of anything without 'one in a million'. even including it, the whole record's struggling to punch its weight. four naff live tracks, an unnecessary reworking of an existing song, and some generally pretty trite acoustic stuff ('patience' and 'oiam' aside)

Don Van Vliet removed all mention of the albums Unconditionally Guaranteed and Bluejeans & Moonbeams from his resume and recommended to his fans that they return them to the shops and demand a refund.

This is really cracking me up this morning, considering the album was called Unconditionally Guaranteed.

The "suppressed" White Zombie stuff mentioned above did end up on their recent box set.
