Soft Machine 4: Classic, Dud, or ?

Of course, I'm expecting lots of duds ("endless noodling", etc.), but here's why personally, I have to say classic: 1) A logical continuation of Third. 2) "Teeth" is a fucking great opener. 3) In retrospect, the conceit of albums with Wyatt only playing the drums all the way through sans vocals are cool. :) 4) But most of all, this has got to be one of the greatest album covers of all time. Whoever had the sadistic brilliance to put Mike Ratledge's 'Modster meets Beelzebub' King look front and center with the totally 70s Brady Bunch wallpaper coloring, was either several millenia ahead of his time or completely insane.

Pretty specific question eh? I've only heard the first three. So Wyatt doesn't sing at all?

Classic and I'm even more partial to Wyatt's solo career so tread lightly...

Hmmm, I had this record, Iike "Third" and do think it is a logical continuation of it, but it really is a lot of endless noodling, and I ended up giving it to my brother.

a better question would be "anything by soft machine except I, II, spaced and half of third - worth buying?"

(I once knew someone whose ONLY RECORD OF ANY KIND was Soft Machine VII. Tho actually I think it is called something else, so this isn't QUITE so weird.)

I think it's simply called "7". I would say definitely 4 and 6, and probably 5 (by interpolation; haven't actually heard it yet) are worth getting.

(Oh, right — memory better than looking-up book after all: which sed "Bundles" which I was sure wuz wrong. Weird = not a judgment on what's on the record, as on owning just one record, called Soft Machine 7...)
