i was like what!! but then inside theres a fucking insane handwringing benzino-as-c-dolores-tucker ('...youre a motherfucker' - pac) article about how 50 is a 'wanksta puppet' and all this cynical bullshit about his marketing and this bizarre 'gun facts' sidebar with "statistics to remember next time you listen to 'heat'" wtf?!?!?! yo its been said by about everyone in the rap game now, but FUCK BENZINO, whos the real rap hitler here

trife (simon_tr), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 22:05 (twenty-two years ago)

This is interesting for a number of reason, most notably because I can't think of a single time a music magazine actually was going to war with a musical artist.....it's bizarre....It would be like Spin doing a feature on "50 Reasons Why Jack White Is A Whiny Pussy"

Was the entire thing a hatchet job on Mr. Cent?? Was there anything postive or at least even-handed?

Also, I quit reading the Source regularly, so I was wondering: What how many mics did give Get Rich or Die Trying in their reveiw? Anything less than 3 1/2 would seem suspicious....

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 22:11 (twenty-two years ago)

i dont remember them even covering it though i dont have the march issue where it might be, i remember there was a lot of talk beforehand about what the source was gonna give it bcz it was such a weird situation and i think they were just like fuck it, its not like ppl were gonna be reading the source to find out if the album is any good before they buy it!!

trife (simon_tr), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 22:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Is this a new cover story? Didn't they do it a couple months ago or am I completely wrong?

s1utsky (slutsky), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 22:36 (twenty-two years ago)

that was XXL, who had 50 guest-edit the magazine...he's a big Talib Kweli fan!

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 22:40 (twenty-two years ago)

shit....I think despite how completely fucked Bezino is, he's going to con me into buying his magazine out of sheer unstoppable curiosity to see how strangely horrible it's become....

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 22:41 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, why the fuck is he persisting in taking on the first and third biggest rappers in the world?? does he think hes going to win and their careers are going to be over??? btw i LOVED that 50/talib interview, especially when they talked abt nina simone, talib is actually kinda real!!

trife (simon_tr), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 22:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Trife in giving Kweli props ultra-shocker!!!

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 23:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I like Kweli....why isn't he real? It was a good interview, I thought 50 showed another side to his personality (I've previously not been a big fan) and a little more depth than I gave him credit for (my mistake)....I thought Quality was good, I liked the more mainstream production/direction....I also have a soft spot for Black Star's first....

I am sad for the Source....When I was in jr high/high school it really meant alot to me, this was the Reginald C. Dennis era. He was a great editor in chief (at least from my reader's perspective)...XXL is okay, but probably not as good as Source in it's prime...

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 23:03 (twenty-two years ago)

get rich got 4 mics in the source, but in that issue lil kim got the lead review with 4 1/2.

joshd, Tuesday, 9 September 2003 23:05 (twenty-two years ago)

xxl is interestingly crazy sometimes (as opposed to repulsively crazy like the source now), the 50-as-editor issue was fantastic and ive been compelled to look at them more now since that, i say somewhat guiltily that my fav 'rap' mag is still probably vibe, especially the hua hsu written stuff

trife (simon_tr), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 23:06 (twenty-two years ago)

thats about right actually, la bella mafia is better than get rich but 50 is a much better rapper/persona than kim

trife (simon_tr), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 23:07 (twenty-two years ago)

and im not trying to dis get rich its still def in my top five of 03, theres just not much too it beyond the singles, i think a comp of all his best mixtape tracks would absolutely KILL it

trife (simon_tr), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 23:10 (twenty-two years ago)

murder dog trife, murder dog.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 04:01 (twenty-two years ago)

4½ mics to Lil' Kim? FUCK the source!!!! i stopped subscribing two years ago, as i realized how reactionary and blind that magazine is, BUT THIS IS RIDICULOUS!!!

Jay Kid (Jay K), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 09:18 (twenty-two years ago)

four months pass...
eminem on the cover this month. EMINEM CLEANING OUT WHITE AMERICA'S CLOSET. so, is he in it or is it another bizarre six page fuck you? they had articles exposing eminem in every issue for a while. it does say BENZINO THE STREET'S DISCIPLE LAYS THE DRAMA TO REST, though.

cloverlandthug, Saturday, 17 January 2004 04:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Do we like The Source?

Sterling waved Murder Dog at me. It was fun.

East Bay Crackhaus (nordicskilla), Saturday, 17 January 2004 04:44 (twenty-one years ago)

yes, we still all like the source.

cloverlandthug, Saturday, 17 January 2004 04:48 (twenty-one years ago)

The royal we?

Yawn.

Fitty = NKOTB.

"Stunt 101" = "Step By Step."

Did the math.

Joseph McCombs, Saturday, 17 January 2004 05:20 (twenty-one years ago)

The Source deserves to go out of business....

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Saturday, 17 January 2004 17:24 (twenty-one years ago)

i'd be stunned if it's NOT another cobbled-together hackpiece

mark p (Mark P), Saturday, 17 January 2004 17:36 (twenty-one years ago)

the benzino the streets disciple headline is just too much to bear.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Saturday, 17 January 2004 17:39 (twenty-one years ago)

whwhat's the consensus here for the best hip hop mag?

Viva La Sam (thatgirl), Saturday, 17 January 2004 19:15 (twenty-one years ago)

the source is still the best.

cloverlandthug, Saturday, 17 January 2004 19:58 (twenty-one years ago)

xxl covers the same stuff as the source and their review section is worse. but it's got better interviews and eye candy (although i've probably masturbated to source fashion spreads more times than xxl eye candy).

murder dog lacks consistent spelling, has six hundred page interviews with dancehall producers, doesn't put spaces between the interviewer's question and the interviewee's answer. but it's got nice, straightforward interviews and the right questions are asked and they really do cover lots of stuff, not just total underground stuff. lots of guns, too.

cloverlandthug, Saturday, 17 January 2004 19:58 (twenty-one years ago)

those are the only three i can get regularly where i live.

and pound, which reviews canibus albums and has lots of weird art sections that look like advertisements but aren't. they had a 50 cent cover before anyone else, i think, but there was a handwringing editor's note at the end of the interview about the violence in his lyrics and stuff.

cloverlandthug, Saturday, 17 January 2004 20:01 (twenty-one years ago)

(pound is canadian)

cloverlandthug, Saturday, 17 January 2004 20:03 (twenty-one years ago)

What exactly does Benzino have on the Source owner (I forgot name)? Pictures of him fellating 9 year olds? Death threats against wife, children and extended family? It's gotta be more than just old buddies from back in the day for them to do this embarassing--not to mention bad for business--shit for so long.

clueless, Saturday, 17 January 2004 20:12 (twenty-one years ago)

dude, benzino IS the source owner

mark p (Mark P), Saturday, 17 January 2004 20:25 (twenty-one years ago)

(well co-owner, but whatever)

mark p (Mark P), Saturday, 17 January 2004 20:25 (twenty-one years ago)

oh :)

hey, you saw my tagline, Saturday, 17 January 2004 20:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I read an issue of "XXL" the other day and it was the first time in a long long time that I managed to get through an entire magazine w/o getting pissed off at the writers even once.

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Sunday, 18 January 2004 15:30 (twenty-one years ago)

twenty plus pages devoted to exposing eminem as a racist. interview with the guy who discovered the tape which paints him as a hero, instead of just some guy who saw a good business opportunity. interview with benzino which paints him as a hero, instead of just whatever he is.

the tape does sound offensive. there's supposedly another one where he says "moon cricket" and "spearchucker" but, like, they totally look stupid and sort of discredit themselves. we get the point that eminem might be racist but isn't a ten year old line from a ten year old freestyle on a ten year old tape sort of unimportant compared to plenty of other things? it's really important to talk about racism and racism in hip-hop and the source does it pretty good a lot of the time and they should do it more often but that's obviously not the point of this eminem stuff.

in the middle of the three or four features on the tape, there's an okay little piece, by some guy i can't remember right now, on racism in hip-hop and why the tape is offensive, which is sort of what they could have run in place of all the other stuff.

cloverlandthug, Thursday, 29 January 2004 23:48 (twenty-one years ago)

also, a big feature on benzino and the untouchables right at the front of the magazine. they don't have a record deal or any underground buzz. all they've got is the source and a low budget video that only gets played on uncut and they suck.

cloverlandthug, Thursday, 29 January 2004 23:50 (twenty-one years ago)

the benzino interview is preposterous

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 29 January 2004 23:52 (twenty-one years ago)

for no apparent reason the record report is missing from this issue. saving hip-hop is more important, i guess.

cloverlandthug, Friday, 30 January 2004 00:29 (twenty-one years ago)

"moon cricket"?

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 30 January 2004 00:34 (twenty-one years ago)

"moon cricket."

cloverlandthug, Friday, 30 January 2004 00:37 (twenty-one years ago)

ego trip ruled. I'd love to see what they'd print about the whole Em/50/Benzino/Source thing.

angel duster, Friday, 30 January 2004 00:42 (twenty-one years ago)

wow! I've lived in the u.s. for 35 years and i've NEVER heard that before. it must be regional. maybe even a mid-west/michigan thing. too bad, it would make a great name for a band.

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 30 January 2004 00:44 (twenty-one years ago)

i almost bought that Source yesterday cuz of the cd and the whole silly thing, but then i remembered how boring the source is and bought a copy of vanity fair instead. the vanity fair was kinda boring too. gwyneth paltrow is boring.

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 30 January 2004 00:47 (twenty-one years ago)

the news section at hiphopsite posted a letter from someone (i'm too tired to remember exactly who) which paints the Em tape in a different light. ps, Benzino is a poo head.

ryan kuo (ryan kuo), Friday, 30 January 2004 09:37 (twenty-one years ago)

one month passes...
To me Benzino is a racist fuck who looks like a burndt wop with cornrows. Benzino just gets PMS over the fact that Em (a white boy) can out rhyme, out spit, and outprofit his ugly nazi ass any day. Most of all he's narrow minded to hip-hop changing and doesn't want a white man to be successful in the business. Em has every right to attack Benzino.
FUCK BENZINO!!!!

Wyett Muth, Thursday, 4 March 2004 20:31 (twenty-one years ago)

great, i was hoping someone would drop the word nazi into this thread, never enough race-inflamed googlers around on a slow day

andrew s (andrew s), Thursday, 4 March 2004 23:15 (twenty-one years ago)

two months pass...
fuck ya, eminem is horrible his rhymes make no sense he doesnt talk about nothing he only sells because white people love him and thinks hes "cool" 50 is aight but will never be one of the best jarule killed them kids on the mix tapes and even though for a minute he went commercial when hes actually putting thought into his music ja is over 50 and aint noone in the game ever gonna be better than pac or nas, even jigga wants the crown but hes gotta settle for 3rd or 4th with biggie. where the real niggas at who are you people can i get a real nigga to use a computer once or is it just me???????? i know theres another one out there all my peoples think im crazy for gettin on this joint so much but i know theres more real niggas out there on here than just me if there is then let me know im out

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 18:04 (twenty-one years ago)

zebedee (zebedee), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 18:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd like to point out that last month's Murder Dog was the best magazine ever: Lil Jon, David Banner, Lil Scrappy, Trillville, BG, Lil Wayne, Soulja Slim, etc etc etc.
