TASTY MILKSHAKE!!

trife (simon_tr), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 02:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I think the idea was originally to rerelease the commercial-flop Wanderland with half new tracks. I'm not sure if this is still the case - Wanderland is now almost two years old, although the rerelease of "Popular Thug" with Nas rapping on the Clones comp. suggests that there may be *some* repetition.

I heard that she's worked with P. Diddy and some other producers as well as the Neptunes.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 03:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not sure if this is still the case

Pharrell has said it is going to be all new material after all...

JoB (JoB), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 08:02 (twenty-two years ago)

It 's pushed back to next year. P&P lists Neptunes, P. Diddy, Timbaland, Dallas Austin, Raphael Saadiq, and Dame Grease as producers.

scott pl. (scott pl.), Thursday, 11 September 2003 02:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Wanderland was so fucking good. This is tragedy.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Thursday, 11 September 2003 02:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Wanderland was off tha meatrack. Someone described seeing her play a [Scottish] festival. The full female band, and Gorillaz drummer, played a version of Smells Like Teen Spirit and the thousands pogo-ed...

ooo. ooo, wow. anyone see that over there?

david day (winslow), Thursday, 11 September 2003 02:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, and Milkshake is top-5 single of the year w/o a doubt. Makes me want to post about "Attitude" songs.

david day (winslow), Thursday, 11 September 2003 02:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Sterling I'm not sure that the failure of "Wanderland" necessarily leads to "Tasty" being a retreat to compensate.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 11 September 2003 03:00 (twenty-two years ago)

hehe yes - i saw that clip of her doing teen spirit on tv - i wast actually at the festival though.

Darn - shoulda lied.

jed (jed_e_3), Thursday, 11 September 2003 09:20 (twenty-two years ago)

David, Kelis played a festival with a cartoon on drums? She's better than I thought.

Nick H, Thursday, 11 September 2003 15:01 (twenty-two years ago)

uk release date 9th of October according to esquire magazine.

jed (jed_e_3), Thursday, 11 September 2003 17:46 (twenty-two years ago)

sorry 8th.

KELIS IS THE SHIT!!!I LOVE HER!!!! GOOD LUCK TO HER AND NAS

LILA KLIX, Thursday, 23 October 2003 04:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey, I wonder if this is the woman who bought that Kelis CD who was ahead of me in line at the record store today! The clerk helpfully informed her that Kelis and Nas were getting married! Lila, remember me? With the Basement Jaxx record and the beard? Keep in touch!

:-O

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 23 October 2003 07:18 (twenty-one years ago)

It's apparently getting released second week of December. Besides The Neptunes, there's production from P. Diddy, Dallas Austin, Dame Grease, Rockwilder, Timbaland, Wyclef Jean and Raphael Saadiq.

JoB (JoB), Thursday, 23 October 2003 08:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Oi! Who done that UKG mix that is getting played everywhere? Eh?

adaml (adaml), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 17:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Anyone else heard the "Planet Rock Remix" of "Milkshake"? It's *exactly* what you think it is!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 30 October 2003 00:13 (twenty-one years ago)

"Milkshake" is awful.

Al (sitcom), Thursday, 30 October 2003 05:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I just heard Milkshake... oh my god it's fucking awesome.

Sean (Sean), Thursday, 30 October 2003 06:22 (twenty-one years ago)

"Milkshake" is awful.

Awfully entertaining, wouldn't you say?
I repeat the claim I made on another thread: KELIS IS THE WORLD'S MOST UNDERRATED POPSTAR.

edward o (edwardo), Thursday, 30 October 2003 06:44 (twenty-one years ago)

planet rock remix!!!!!! ahh tim u got me

there's a boot of milkshake on egyptian riddim around

prima fassy (bob), Thursday, 30 October 2003 08:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm wasn't kidding! It sounds pretty cool too.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 31 October 2003 00:32 (twenty-one years ago)

kelis is just toooo sexy. her voice fits best with anyone using neptunes beats too*

wonder what her relationship with nas is like, seeing as he's so grumpy...but that's just interviews i guess.

*except maybe old dirty...

paulhw (paulhw), Friday, 31 October 2003 02:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I heard "Milkshake" on a VH1 interlude/station ID commercial and was like wo...

Michael Patrick Brady (Michael Patrick Brady), Friday, 31 October 2003 14:51 (twenty-one years ago)

does anyone know who the female MC is on the remix?

"would you like a slice of my ice cream cake?" !!!

strongo hulkington's ghost (dubplatestyle), Friday, 31 October 2003 14:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Milkshake has now been nudged back to January 5th. Tasty is still out this year, right? yes? hrm? right? right? Unk.

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Saturday, 8 November 2003 01:35 (twenty-one years ago)

damn right, (it's better than your's)

A Nairn (moretap), Saturday, 8 November 2003 02:53 (twenty-one years ago)

It's a great single.

Sean (Sean), Saturday, 8 November 2003 05:02 (twenty-one years ago)

It's a crappy single. I liked Kelis early on, and think her parts are some of the best stuff on the N.E.R.D. album, but this new song is boring and weak. The chorus sucks in exactly the way about 60% of Neptunes choruses suck—not nearly as anthemic as they think it is. I didn't like her song on the Clones album, either. I think she's shaping up as a major disappointment, frankly.

Phil Freeman (Phil Freeman), Saturday, 8 November 2003 14:05 (twenty-one years ago)

well said, Phil. I'm really getting tired of Pharrell's clunky, overly wordy choruses.

Al (sitcom), Saturday, 8 November 2003 14:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think the chorus is meant to be anthemic at all. It's off-center and weird.

bugged out, Saturday, 8 November 2003 15:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Anthemic=the massive synth riff!

bugged out, Saturday, 8 November 2003 15:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Clearly the Neptunes' Achilles heel is their middle-eights. "Senorita" and "Boys" are awful.

Nick H, Saturday, 8 November 2003 16:30 (twenty-one years ago)

two weeks pass...
so.... anybody hear this yet? only holdover from wanderland is "flashback" i think. nothing as immediately gripping as 'milkshake' which is quite the red herring here unfortunately. nice slinky track w/ nas and ethereal closing track sorta reminscent of 'get along with you'. not sure about the andre 3000 hijinks though.

scissors (Honda), Sunday, 23 November 2003 00:46 (twenty-one years ago)

tasty is now to be released in the uk 9th december

jed (jed_e_3), Sunday, 23 November 2003 01:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm fuckin' hooked on this shit.

Speedy Gonzalas (Speedy Gonzalas), Sunday, 23 November 2003 01:39 (twenty-one years ago)

What exactly is she speaking of when she says "Milkshake?"

Person 22, Sunday, 23 November 2003 03:46 (twenty-one years ago)

the milk bags are a jingling baby

JaXoN (JasonD), Sunday, 23 November 2003 06:35 (twenty-one years ago)

this is gonna take a while for me to digest, so no comment save for noting that "in public" reminds me a little of miss kittin's "madame hollywood".

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Sunday, 23 November 2003 16:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh my god, Marathon is amazing. It's completely perfect.. the moaning at the end.. Rolling Through The Hood sounds a lot like something else - maybe an 80s track..? I like the uptempo Protect My Heart too, it's quite groovy with the handclaps right at the end.

edward o (edwardo), Monday, 24 November 2003 17:57 (twenty-one years ago)

after a couple of listens, i think the 2nd half is weaker, but the first half is amazing. andre 3000's contributions should be erased.

toby (tsg20), Monday, 24 November 2003 20:18 (twenty-one years ago)

two weeks pass...
I actually think that Andre 3000's contribution added a little more different-ness to the album. Its actually a good song just like many of his on The Love Below. It seems to me that it kept the album from sounding too mainstream.

Nisha H, Wednesday, 10 December 2003 01:35 (twenty-one years ago)

andre's track might be one of the least annoying.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 01:47 (twenty-one years ago)

i feel dirty even saying that, on so many levels.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 02:14 (twenty-one years ago)

i am still pissed off about that fucking interview.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 11 December 2003 23:55 (twenty-one years ago)

arista records can suck my fat cock until i cum blood.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 11 December 2003 23:56 (twenty-one years ago)

i can't help but think people praising this record so highly is playing catch-up.

Alternative theory: they like it.

bugged out, Friday, 12 December 2003 00:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Flip theory: People dissing the record are jaded hipsters who move on as soon as an artist gets a little less out there.

;)

bugged out, Friday, 12 December 2003 00:25 (twenty-one years ago)

"cf missy, outkast"

bugged out, Friday, 12 December 2003 00:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think Outkast really fits that theory.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 12 December 2003 00:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I got my rewording ready for that: "as soon as an artist gets a little more mainstream."

bugged out, Friday, 12 December 2003 00:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think Outkast really fits that theory ("Hey Ya" is less mainstream than "Ms. Jackson" - its crossover as such is in reverse).

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 12 December 2003 00:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Plus Missy has gotten *less* mainstream.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 12 December 2003 00:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, whatever. The point is, dimissing people's opinions on the basis of assumed motivation is obnoxious.

bugged out, Friday, 12 December 2003 00:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah fair enough.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 12 December 2003 00:47 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, you really got me on the "too mainstream" thing. i'm gonna go back to my busted mp3s now, if that's okay.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 12 December 2003 01:15 (twenty-one years ago)

two points:

a. wanderland was certainly more "out there" than kaleidoscope and it was in no way an improvement.

b. eat my fuc.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 12 December 2003 01:22 (twenty-one years ago)

(i swear i dont blieve in faeries. i swear it.)

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 12 December 2003 01:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Not too quick up the uptake today, eh.

bugged out, Friday, 12 December 2003 01:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I never fully worked out my wanderland spiel and with the Tasty direction maybe i never will, and the album's not handy, but in brief it was charting this really distinct afro-no-futurism course that was all about a self-aware middle class position haunted by hip-hop as a reminder of its precariousness, like 5%ism turned backwards, "i'm one of the saved ones, but doesn't it SUCK that there are so few?" even as her daddy picks her up. And this wasn't just lyrical, but in this choral gospel tinged synth-sonic sound, certain parts of the melodies, this sense of sorrow at the actualization of escapism.

which is why, yeah, Tasty feels like a retreat. and also isn't as sonically rich.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Friday, 12 December 2003 04:27 (twenty-one years ago)

"Milkshake" is one of the most out-there things she's done. And while Tasty as a whole isn't as out-there as Kaleidoscope or Wanderland it's not exactly generic.

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 12 December 2003 14:15 (twenty-one years ago)

i am a bit confused as to why everyone is assuming that by "not as good as the others" i mean "generic".

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 12 December 2003 15:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, I wasn't referring specifically to you... the impression I've got from most reviews etc. is that it is more generic than Kaleidoscope and Wanderland therefore it isn't as good. I still don't know why you think it's a disappointment.

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 12 December 2003 15:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Jess have you really been downloading Busted mp3s???!!!

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Friday, 12 December 2003 15:37 (twenty-one years ago)

simon trife asked me to make him a pop-punk/nu-emo primer! ("it's the only kind of rock music i can stand.")

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 12 December 2003 15:42 (twenty-one years ago)

we'll see if he can connect the dots between husker du and blink 182.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 12 December 2003 15:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Good one Trife! I recommend "Year 3000", "You Said No", "Crashed The Wedding" and "Air Hostess"

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Friday, 12 December 2003 15:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I would love to see a Trife review of the tape.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Friday, 12 December 2003 15:45 (twenty-one years ago)

While Busted are here, I loved their 'Who's David' as performed on CD: UK.

Barima (Barima), Friday, 12 December 2003 15:46 (twenty-one years ago)

It's a bit whingey on the album Barima - is that going to be the next single?? God I hope not.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Friday, 12 December 2003 15:46 (twenty-one years ago)

SORRY BACK TO KELIS PLS.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Friday, 12 December 2003 15:47 (twenty-one years ago)

i fear i am rockist for preferring the "serious" blink singles

haha NO CHANCE NOW TOM

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 12 December 2003 15:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I agree with Tom's implication that somehow, the idea of fiddo downloading Busted is wacked out and somewhat astounding (okay, mostly amusing)!

Okay, last Busted - I might ask for the album for X-Mas!

Barima (Barima), Friday, 12 December 2003 15:48 (twenty-one years ago)

(Actually, Jess, our tastes have seemed pretty similar for all the time I've been here)

Barima (Barima), Friday, 12 December 2003 15:49 (twenty-one years ago)

haha i own green day records still there is nothing astounding about it :-(

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 12 December 2003 15:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm a bit disappointed that the "milkshake" on the album is not the version they've been playing on the radio round here with the extra mary jane girls style synth bits and whatnot. what is that mix? where is it?

andrew m. (andrewmorgan), Friday, 12 December 2003 22:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I heard milkshake out at da club last night and it was pretty great.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 12 December 2003 23:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Having just seen the video, I now understand how this song reached such a wide audience.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Saturday, 13 December 2003 06:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Okay so now that I've heard the entire album I can say that i wrong, plz throw shoes at me, she is indeed not overrated, etc. Much of it is terrific, fabulous, etc. But I guess it's telling that the track I like most is "Flashback," so maybe I should seek Wanderland out.. I don't think I'm alone either in preferring older Neptunian productions to what they're doing these days, for some reason, but I'll still be first in line to get the new N.E.R.D., come February or whenever it's happening

Vic (Vic), Monday, 15 December 2003 07:49 (twenty-one years ago)

and the Andre track isn't hoo-ha amazing or anything, but a lot better than any of his steaming love below trash

Vic (Vic), Monday, 15 December 2003 07:55 (twenty-one years ago)

the dre verse is just really funny i think, in terms of reducing his stream-of-consciousness flow to something that rhymes more and makes more sense, but the "woke up early this morning" bit is awful.

also his new flow bugs me i think.

The TM Juke remix of 'Trick Me' currently up at soul sides is kind of ingenious. I thought it was a duff mp3 when I saw the size of it, but no, it's 2:49 of a pretend vintage funk-soul side.
