Adam Green (solo)

Andrew Frye (paul cox), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 02:46 (twenty-two years ago)

The Breeders' Pod is better than the Pixies' Bossanova.

Andrew, what is Four Tet an offshoot of?

p.j. (Henry), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 02:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Fridge

the surface noise (electricsound), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 02:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Are the Time better than the Revolution?

Shoot. Forget I said that.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 02:52 (twenty-two years ago)

The Electric Company.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 02:53 (twenty-two years ago)

esoj's right, but vague. Four Tet is a side project of Fridge.

Andrew Frye (paul cox), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 02:54 (twenty-two years ago)

The Electric Company

Better than Medicine?

Andrew Frye (paul cox), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 02:55 (twenty-two years ago)

MUCH.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 03:04 (twenty-two years ago)

S0D is better than Anthrax

what about Maids of Gravity? the first album was than Medicine - dont know who electric Company is.

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 03:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I think New Wet Kojak has become a much more interesting band than GVSB.

Bruce Urquhart (Bruce Urquhart), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 03:23 (twenty-two years ago)

i liked Belreve much more than New Bomb Turks

the surface noise (electricsound), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 03:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Andrew Frye (paul cox), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 04:11 (twenty-two years ago)

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 04:40 (twenty-two years ago)

drive like jehu >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> rocket from the crypt

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 04:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll take Gentle Waves over most Belle & Sebastian.

You, sir, are strange.

Andrew Frye (paul cox), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 05:27 (twenty-two years ago)

The 6ths' Wasps' Nests trumps a good portion of the Magnetic Fields catalog.

Not sure if The New Pornographers count, but I like them better than Neko Case's solo stuff, as well as Destroyer.

Robert Pollard and Doug Gillard's Speak Kindly Of Your Volunteer Fire Department was the best Guided By Voices album that GBV never released.

I enjoy Sam Prekop's s/t solo album a lot more than most Sea & Cake albums.

Nick Mirov (nick), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 05:41 (twenty-two years ago)

RFTC was kind of the side project originally though.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 05:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Ghostface and the Wu

scottjames23 (worrysome-man), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 07:10 (twenty-two years ago)

The Shins were Flake Music at one point. Same exact people, different name.

Nick Mirov (nick), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 07:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Silver Jews? Not that I consider them anything corollary, but some Malkmus fans do.

Famous Athlete, Wednesday, 10 September 2003 08:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Calexico are not by any yardstick better than Giant Sand. But they're way more successful. Actually, why no GS threads here? The new Band Of Rocky Blanchette album rulkes.

laticsmon, Wednesday, 10 September 2003 08:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I loved the Eggman album by Size of Boo Radleys.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 09:08 (twenty-two years ago)

SOD is also better than Nuclear Assault!

Most of the first wave of Wu-Tang solo albums are arguably even better than the first Enter the Wu-Tang.

Down are way better than Pantera.

M Carty (mj_c), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 09:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Home & Garden better than early 80s Pere Ubu.

dave225 (Dave225), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 09:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Looper and The Gentle Waves are as good as Belle and Sebastian, although not better.

Robin Goad (rgoad), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 10:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Adam Green (solo)

And Kimya Dawson solo.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 10:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Wings and the Plastic Ono Band

Dadaismus (Dada), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 10:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I like Tuatara more than REM.

peepee (peepee), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 10:58 (twenty-two years ago)

New Pornographers seconded.

Weakerthans over Propaghandi? (NB I have never heard any Propaghandi)

Adam Green/Kimya Dawson over Moldy Peaches is madness.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 11:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I much prefer A Perfect Circle to Tool.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 12:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Ned, as usual, is wrong about Medicine.

kate (kate), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 12:37 (twenty-two years ago)

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 13:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I also like Money Mark's solo albums more than Beastie Boys' albums.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 13:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Weakerthans over Propaghandi? (NB I have never heard any Propaghandi)

Thats not a side project, he left the band for a couple of monthes (years?) for a different reason.
And don't bother looking for Propaghandi, one of those bands if you'd like them you'd heard of them by.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 13:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Broken Social Scene by a mile over by Divine Right and a lot less over the other people involved.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 13:16 (twenty-two years ago)

after listening to their new LP more than a few times over the past week, i must conclude at this point that i enjoy A Silver Mount Zion much more than GY!BE.

jason m. (jason m), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 13:18 (twenty-two years ago)

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 13:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Jacobo, Wednesday, 10 September 2003 20:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Baader Meinhof > the Auteurs

chuck, Wednesday, 10 September 2003 21:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I haven't even heard Baader Meinhof and I know Chuck must be right.

Ned, as usual, is wrong about Medicine.

This response took longer than expected. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 21:50 (twenty-two years ago)

FFWD >> anything the Orb and Robert Fripp were doing at the time.

LOL Thomas (Chris Barrus), Thursday, 20 April 2006 18:11 (nineteen years ago)

Reindeer Section > Snow Patrol

sean gramophone (Sean M), Thursday, 20 April 2006 18:41 (nineteen years ago)

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Thursday, 20 April 2006 18:49 (nineteen years ago)

which is the side project: !!! or Out Hud?

not an important distinction to make re: this thread because they both suck.

Ben H (Ben H), Thursday, 20 April 2006 19:17 (nineteen years ago)

Storm & Stress were a million times better than what Don Cab was doing at the time, and a little bit better than Don Cab at their best.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Friday, 21 April 2006 09:33 (nineteen years ago)

St Vitus Dance > Echo and the Bunnymen

Archer Prewitt solo > Sea and Cake
Brakes > Electric Soft Parade (but not BSP)
Sunset Rubdown = Wolf Parade

Simon H. (Simon H.), Friday, 21 April 2006 15:37 (nineteen years ago)

I'm sure I'll have arguments around here for this, but i think The Glove's Blue Sunshine completely trumps both Pornography and Hyaena.

I know Pornography is a bit of a sacred cow around here, but for me it wears, it's too dark and intense and just overall cloying/suffocating. Great opener and "A Strange Day" is amazing, but I don't enjoy listening to the whole album. I get listener fatigue before side two even starts.

Hyaena is just okay. Some good tracks ("Dazzle", "Prudence", but again, overall the whole thing gets boring and blah and way too gothy, and I wind up turning it off halfway through as well.

Blue Sunshine, on the other hand, I listen through from start to finish and it's just a trip, literally. It sucks me in and sounds fun and scary and happy and mad.

But I guess I should also come clean, The Top is my favorite album by The Cure. So my frame of reference may be a bit different here too...

JW (ex machina), Friday, 21 April 2006 16:00 (nineteen years ago)

kostars

WAAAYY better than luscious jackson. and it's not that luscious jackson was *that* bad (although it wouldn't have killed them to finish writing a couple of their songs), but that the kostars were *that* good.

Lawrence the Looter (Lawrence the Looter), Friday, 21 April 2006 17:22 (nineteen years ago)

The Glove's the first one I thought of too, but I probably like Kiss In The Dreamhouse better. might prefer Blue Sunshine to any album by The Cure, though.

Paul (scifisoul), Friday, 21 April 2006 17:28 (nineteen years ago)

The Wombles are light years better than anything Mike Batt ever did when he was being serious

TS: Mick Ralphs vs. Ariel Bender (Dada), Friday, 21 April 2006 17:33 (nineteen years ago)

eight months pass...
i just picked up the Latin Playboys s/t CD for $2 in a cutout bin.

it's pretty amazing!

i only wish they didn't have that handful of "real songs" which are still too much like regular los lobos for me, kinda boring clapton singing. but this is a cool album.

M@tt He1geson: Sassy and I Don't Care Who Knows It (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 9 January 2007 20:45 (eighteen years ago)

lusk!

You've Got Scourage On Your Breath (Haberdager), Tuesday, 9 January 2007 20:52 (eighteen years ago)

both Latin Playboys records are awesome!! Second one has an odd throwaway cameo from Wendy and Lisa. Chuck eddy's a hater on them for some reason.

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 9 January 2007 22:55 (eighteen years ago)

Art Bears >>>>>>>>>> Henry Cow

emil.y (emil.y), Tuesday, 9 January 2007 23:06 (eighteen years ago)

Yung Wu is an interesting Feelies side project. Don't know if they're actually better, but still good.

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 01:36 (eighteen years ago)

dont know about better, but Black Heart Procession and Pinback were/are both more succesful than Thee Mile Pilot.

jambalaya backgammon (grady), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 01:44 (eighteen years ago)

Agreed on the Latin Playboys discs.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 01:48 (eighteen years ago)

Network > Green Day

Bobby Peru (Bobby Peru), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 01:48 (eighteen years ago)

And Grady, are you with me that BHP rapidly devolved into a cul de sac? First album I still love, though.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 01:48 (eighteen years ago)

i liked the first three, actually. saw them play to about seven people at the fireside bowl in 1998 and it was probably one of my favorite shows of my college years. i didn't really care for amore del tropico, and walked out of thier show on the tour supporting it.

i've given the new one a few listens and the jury's still out.

first one is classic though.

jambalaya backgammon (grady), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 02:01 (eighteen years ago)

Sam Prekop's last album > Sea and Cake - One Bedroom

Imitation Electric Piano and Monade > The last couple of Stereolab albums

Matt Olken (Moodles), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 02:22 (eighteen years ago)

Tortoise started out a side project and then ended up being the main gig. I like it the most from what those musicians have done.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 03:37 (eighteen years ago)

Sam Prekop's last album > Sea and Cake - One Bedroom

The first Sam Prekop album pwns everything Sea and Cake ever did.

Emily Bjurnhjam (Emily Bjurnhjam), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 03:53 (eighteen years ago)

6 Feet Deep by Gravediggaz is better than any Wu album I've heard, probably also better than any Prince Paul/Stetsasonic album, but I'm not too familiar with them.

I see Wendy and Lisa all over television scores these days, currently, they are doing the music for Heroes and Crossing Jordan, maybe more.

M@tt He1geson: Sassy and I Don't Care Who Knows It (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 16:43 (eighteen years ago)

The first Sam Prekop album pwns everything Sea and Cake ever did.

Also, Ciccone Youth > Sonic Youth.

Mark Ogilvie (frilly), Friday, 12 January 2007 04:46 (eighteen years ago)

Lee Harvey Oswald Band > Didjits

Uncle Tom (Uncle Tom), Friday, 12 January 2007 06:14 (eighteen years ago)

Tones on Tail have already been mentioned, but I'd like to second them- so much better than Bauhaus it's almost embarrassing, and this from someone who likes Bauhaus.
