Both have occasional hella good moments which are generally outweighed by overwhelming annoyingness. Take some of the best tracks by each, mix 'em, that'd be a gnarly disc though.

What Nick said. I have evidence that there is dopeness lurking somewhere in the Anticon roster (Push Button Objects, "3 Doctors"), and if I'm feeling charitable I could sort of kind of almost see Dose One as a loony beatnik Cee-lo. Other than that, uhm erm. Sage Francis is on Epitaph now anyways, right?

the whole question was a poor construct in the first place in that it pits a loose collective/label against an individual act.

also, one should never discuss underground hip hop on ILM -- it's an excercise in pure futility. everyone knows it's cool to be "populist".

oh probably not, i mean i will fully admit i mapped a flawed heroism / selfmythology thing onto them, and their whole oeuvre is a bit of a slog but at their best i liked what i saw as like an almost ztt New Pop style of absurdist (yet secretly youthfully unabashed via implied b-boy fuck u) hypersmart-not-smart "science", like even the name 'anti-pop consortium', did anyone really think they were serious! except sometimes, oh ok yeah often they seemed to believe their own shtick and turned back into art boho poets who namechecked alice coltrane and whatever was the other music top 10 album at the time, boring. which isnt to say their detractors were instantly right either cos there was so much empty hack poseur kneejerk "pretentious" sneering towards them too. which i liked being pretentious about.

the awkward transitional 'ends against the middle' ep is prob yr best bet for a single release, i didnt like 'arrythmia' so much afterwards but for 3 d/ls off the top of my head try 'tuff gong', '3 digit wiz', and er why not, 'lazer tooth' off the isolationist lp

i mean the rapping is not the best but musically it's an interesting take on doing hip hop and jazz in something that's not derived from tribe called quest and is more out there jazz
