Hi all, I just recently got a bunch of Fela Kuti. I know he is considered the King of Afro beat. Are there any other artists that are essential to pick up?

Nigeria 70 is an awesome 2-disc compilation that has Fela-similar stuff on it.

Also check out the recent comp Ghana Soundz. Not strictly Afrobeat, but close.

"La La La" by Segun Bucknor and His Revolution is like the best song ever, i swear

'Afro Rock' is a pretty good comp. Fela's son Femi has put out some decent stuff, thought it's not anywhere near the level of his dad's. (but whose is?)

does "afro beat" mean something other than "Fela and his progeny" (well not literally)? Because I'm assuming that some people mentioned don't really fit, no?

I don't know gabbneb, you tell me? Which people are you referring to, and why?

King Sunny Ade plays juju, not Afrobeat.

But if you mean "Afropop," by all means, he's the greatest. I wish it weren't so expensive for him to tour now, 'cause that's an incredible live show...
