Bands who reform after ages apart - classic or dud / search-destroy

In general it would be best if bands never reformed. Nostalgia is rubbish, and most bands only ever seem to reform to milk the live circuit playing their hits of yesteryear.

are there any exceptions to this? and are there any acts who are so impressive as live performers that we can forgive their inability to record worthwhile new studio material.

The words "Inland," "Revenue" and "demand" usually lie behind such endeavours.

Arthur Lee maybe. I thought Francoise Hardy did well with Le Danger...and A-ha's last effort had some good moments.

WIRE.

I was pretty happy to see the Stooges reform since I love their music and wasn't around to see it live when it happened originally. There also were a lot of people (at the Detroit show anyway) who were experiencing the reunion a pure nostalgia trip, and that was great to see too. So I don't think all nostagia can be written off as rubbish. It can be great or it can suck just like anything else.

The Stooges would also seem to fit into the category of "so impressive as live performers that we can forgive their inability to record worthwhile new studio material". But let's wait to hear the new studio material before passing that judgement.

With the exception of the Sex Pistols which I think was a huge mistake I don't much care either way. If they want to do it - why not? You can take it or leave it. For me a bad reunion doesn't particularly tarnish old glories (unless you want it to) and a good one is a nice bonus.

It's also fun to see what people look like now.

Wire, yes indeed. Mission of Burma, too.

BrianB is OTM on The Stooges.

I am categorically against bands reforming. But then I think back to HOW GOOOOOOOD that Bauhaus reunion tour was, and I might be softening on my opinion.

At the Foundry the other week, HSA was chatting away with this guy, and he was telling us this funny story about how he had completely forgotten how to play guitar in the intervening years... as we walk away, HSA informs me that he used to be in Wire.

... which is why Wire are one of the few bands who've ever reformed and done anything even remotely worthwhile. I say bands should only reform when ALL their members have forgotten to play their respective instruments.

When bands reform, why is it never Talking Heads? Fucking ay!

HSA was in Wire?

The Free Design's 'Cosmic Peekaboo' was a welcome comeback after 30 years.A couple of great tracks on it.

Usually dud, but there are exceptions

David Byrne likes being solo musical dictator, plus being Fathers/Mother of Techno is better than the embryos going, "Who dat?"

Predictions on the Judas Priest reformation then?

The Flatlanders record from last year is a good listen, mind you I don't think their first record came out until almost twenty years after it was recorded.

Classic, but last I heard they were out again, dammit.

I didn't mind the Buzzcocks reunion back in the early 90s, actually - it meant I got to see them live after all, and they were actually really energetic and great fun.
