The word “pop” always had a pejorative nuance to it. left alone
the “folk” meaning ,pop is a music designed to suit common
tastes , a generic big audience as opposed to a serious music
for attentive listeners.yes…maybe elitist bullshit (but let’s not
forget that adorno in his critic of cultural industry misinterpreted
jazz music using a not so different, even if infinitely more
complex, point of view ) .even progressive pop bands (in the
sense of progress , not beards )like beatles, beach boys were
supposed to go big ,to enter the charts . Today pop is a
confusingword : when using it are we referring to madonna
,ricky martin or to cornelius & stereo total ? best pop ,today, is
about exploiting
personal mythologies in order to distillate them in a song form
that will reach a transversal global clique of like-minded people .
is this the result of market customization? . milton manetas ( a
one trick pony of contemporary art ) thought “art” wasn’t
describing things going on today and came up (with the help of a
professinal equipe ) with the word “neen” ( has anyone heard it
pronunced somewhere?…shit it didn’t work ).well the greek guy
was also making a subtle assertion on the role of marketing in
the art world ( another one ) nonetheless I want to go on in this
demanding quest ,and ask you to be my professional equipe .
what’s the name of this breed of pop ? not accepted names with
pop in it ( they tried’em with brit pop , art pop…)
