all i know about him is that he used to perform at clubs in LA about 5yrs ago when i still lived there. he's pretty much carrying on the torch left by Leon Thomas. vocal, spiritual, post-coltrane jazz. a friend of mine has a cd of his (Horace) and it's pretty nice.

does anyone know anything else about him (how long he's been performing, if he's on any other recordings. thanks

new album by Dwight coming out on ninjatune soon .. production by ammoncontact.

lots of uplifting soulful grooves, with a soul 2 soul kind of lyrical vibe, focus on love being the answer to everything, and yes he drops 'a love supreme' in from time to time

1st listen makes me think i am gonna get into this more than i originally expected.

ammoncontact = SO DOPE

vahid (vahid), Friday, 10 June 2005 08:09 (twenty years ago)

being honest i didn't fell ammoncontacts album and minilp too much .. tis alright, but a little too dry in places, but adding the soul-jazz voice makes things swing a lot more ..

mark e (mark e), Friday, 10 June 2005 08:23 (twenty years ago)

the way i first heard of Dwight Trible was through Carlos Nino (one half of amoncontact) was the promoter of the clubs i talked about in the subject of this thread. he's got good taste in music, but makes music that's not my cup of tea (he also organized Build an Ark). i've heard that the new Trible 12" is great. more hip hop less jazz (does Sa Ra have a track on there?)

[that bastard] jaxon (jaxon), Friday, 10 June 2005 16:41 (twenty years ago)

not to get too off-topic but "build an ark" is sort of a redundant project, yeah?

vahid (vahid), Friday, 10 June 2005 17:23 (twenty years ago)

totally stupid

[that bastard] jaxon (jaxon), Friday, 10 June 2005 17:29 (twenty years ago)

not off topic. i believe dwight sings on it.

actually there are a few really good tracks, but over all, i'd much rather listen to original Impulse recordings

[that bastard] jaxon (jaxon), Friday, 10 June 2005 17:30 (twenty years ago)

wow, from the three tracks on this site, i think i'm gonna have to get this. sounds amazing.

one month passes...
so i picked up the album and, although i kinda like it, i don't think it really works. there are tons of great beats, and his voice sounds great. but i don't think they really work together. trible almost sounds like he's singing back up the entire time. he never really lets loose but for like one or two times. he hardly sings actual songs (something i NEVER complain about) and he's even outshined by the guests on particular tracks. there aren't really verses at all. he'll just sing the hook on most tracks. i feel bad. i also don't understand why there's an instrumental disc that was put into it (which i haven't actually listened to yet), because the first album is almost instrumental. or do they think that people won't like his voice (it is a bit different)? that's not very reassuring to him. oh well.

plain ol' jaxon (jaxon), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 20:31 (twenty years ago)

the instrumental is with the promo only according to ninjatune.

aint art of the normal version.

mark e (mark e), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 21:04 (twenty years ago)

nah, i bought it new in the store non-promo

plain ol' jaxon (jaxon), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 21:17 (twenty years ago)

it's only 10 tracks on the instrumental instead of 17 on the album though

mark, do you have the album? do you agree, or do you think it works as a whole?

plain ol' jaxon (jaxon), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 21:19 (twenty years ago)

plain .. it doesn't work too well i think. in some places it can be very special, but there are times you just want a song. i really tried to get into this album due to the obvious levels of respect that dwight's background commands (hence why the album has recieved top level reviews by the major press i suspect) .. but i just didn't feel it. then again, i am not that keen on ammoncontacts production styles - i find it very dry even clinical, making the vocals seem out of place. which is a real shame as dwights voice could really work in a hip hop styled surrounding i suspect - a la david axelrods album on mowax. but thats another story ..

so apparently i wasn't the only one that felt that trible's presence on the album was next to none. he did too:

In fact, from what I can make out, Dwight would have liked to have had a bit more input into the new album, talking of one of the standout tracks, ‘Waves Of Infinite Harmony’, “Waves was sort of sampled, I don’t even know where he took it from.” And of ‘Freedom Dance’, “I like funk music, I always wanted to make a song like that, I wish I was in the studio to mix it a bit more. I would have really brought the bass and drums out to where the shit was really pumping.” It’s pretty funky now, how much funkier can it get? A Dwight Trible remix could be on the cards? (Come on Ninja Tunes, you know you want to).

He says of one of what I called the “infuriating ‘mini’ tracks” like ‘Rise’, “It was more of a nice interlude. I like songs to do a little more, you know, lets do something with it. But hey, I wasn’t the producer. Carlos wanted me to be a bit more subtle, you know, I trusted him ‘cos this is his genre.”

But it’s clear he’s got the ultimate respect for both Carlos and Dexter Story, as, “they know what’s the kids like.” Carlos’ aim was to make an album for the kids to dance to after all. Dwight says, “Dexter brought 4-5 songs over to the house and played them for me and two songs that I thought would work were ‘Freedom Dance’ and ‘Try Love’ which has that infectious kind of feel.”

i revived the thread because i just got a reissue of his 2004 album "Living Water" that is really nice. it's just a straight up spiritual jazz album that sounds like classic Leon Thomas or Andy Bey (even a cover of bey's "Celestial Blues" on it that's wonderful).

jaxon (jaxon), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 17:21 (nineteen years ago)

wait he's complaining "love is the answer" was too ammoncontact-centric? if it was any less ammoncontact-centric i don't think i would have been as interesting.

maybe he should be hook up w/ cinematic orchestra??

the art ensemble of chicago house (vahid), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 19:31 (nineteen years ago)

are leon and andy dead? because i prefer both to d.t. (sorry d) and it's not like young dudes are lining up to work with either of them.

i am imagining an insane carl craig + ian o'brien + kirk degiorgio + andy bey collaboration.

the art ensemble of chicago house (vahid), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 19:33 (nineteen years ago)

Leon passed in 1999. Andy's alive.

When Pharrell was on Gilles Peterson's show a couple months back (strictly research, folks), he was talking about the first time he heard "Celestial Blues" and how he flipped out. He was doing an impersonation, sounding like he was bouncing off the walls -- very endearing. I think Gilles suggested that Pharrell ought to collaborate with people like that (he was also going on about Don Blackman), and Pharrell said something like "OH HELL YEAH I WISH I COULD I NEED TO MAKE THAT HAPPEN!!"

Andy_K (Andy_K), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 19:40 (nineteen years ago)

if it was any less ammoncontact-centric i don't think i would have been as interesting.

i don't think it needed to be ammoncontact-centric-less, but more dwight-trible-ful

jaxon (jaxon), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 20:17 (nineteen years ago)

so, is there a new ammoncontact album? i was in the store and saw what i thought was the devendra banhart LP. like a woodsy sgt peppers cover, but because it was the vinyl copy, i noticed something i'd never seen before. carlos was in the center of the picture. i went home to look it up and show my friend (wife's best friend was good friends w/carlos in highschool) and i couldn't find it. maybe it wasn't really the devendra album i was looking at, but something that looked just like it?

jaxon (jaxon), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 20:19 (nineteen years ago)

well there is a new ammoncontact album, but this isn't what i was talking about either

ok, they made a contest for people to send in photos to make it to the cover of the vinyl only artwork and here he is.
